PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Isaiah Sturridge (ranked 2947 p4p, 348 weight class) and Osama Akharraz (ranked 5921 p4p, 553 weight class). Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Isaiah Sturridge!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 19 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Osama Akharraz!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Stewart Dunkirk and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
I was talking to Sturridge's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Sturridge is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Sturridge pushes off an throws an elbow but Akharraz leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Akharraz misses with a short punch on the inside.

Akharraz is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Sturridge's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Sturridge jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Sturridge looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Akharraz is fending him off so far but Sturridge persists. Nope, Akharraz circles away and we're back to standing.
Akharraz doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sturridge connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Sturridge swats away the attempt to clinch by Akharraz.
Akharraz misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Sturridge.

Akharraz tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Sturridge was well out of range. Poor timing from Akharraz.
Akharraz throws a right hand that Sturridge ducks under and follows up with a left that Sturridge also avoids with ease.

Sturridge lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Akharraz at a distance.
Akharraz tries to clinch but Sturridge moves out of range.

Sturridge lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Sturridge jabbing away but nothing is landing.

Akharraz instigates a clinch.
Sturridge drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Akharraz gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Akharraz has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Akharraz displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Sturridge throws out the jab.
Sturridge throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Sturridge feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Sturridge is standing up over Akharraz. Akharraz looks to escape but Sturridge dives into side control.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Sturridge is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Akharraz is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Akharraz tries to escape but Sturridge is in control.

Sturridge has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Akharraz is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Sturridge has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Sturridge cracks Akharraz with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Akharraz is still in real trouble! Can Sturridge finish him?
Sturridge cracks Akharraz with a big elbow. Oh, he's hurt! Sturridge immediately mounts and start dropping bombs! Akharraz is done! The referee jumps in and saves him from any more punishment - a quick and decisive finish by Sturridge!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Isaiah Sturridge!
A relieved looking Isaiah Sturridge thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
