And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 1, fighting out of The Island, John Smith!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Dirk Anderson and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kopp avoids a punch combination nicely.
Kopp drops down looking for a counter takedown but Smith sprawls and moves away.
Smith misses with a wild combination.
Smith just misses with a punch to the body.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Kopp.
Kopp thuds a left hand into Smith's body.
Smith fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Kopp looks for a takedown but Smith sprawls well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kopp shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Smith sprawls well. Smith wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Kopp gets slowly back to his feet.

Kopp moves forwards but Smith connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Kopp pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Kopp slips a jab from Smith.
As Smith looks to move away, Kopp throws a big counter combo but Smith just gets out of the way.

Smith throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
A jab from Smith does it's job there.
John Smith is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Kopp takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Kopp throws a sloppy body shot
and Smith counters with a nice leg kick.
Kopp is breathing heavily.

Kopp closes the distance and pushes Smith back into the cage.
Kopp tries to throw a body punch but Smith avoids it by throwing Kopp back against the cage.
Smith fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Smith tries to break the clinch but Kopp is controlling the position.

Kopp pulls Smith into guard.
My spies in Island Sparring inform me that Smith has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Smith decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
A chopping leg kick lands by Smith.
Smith avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
A solid leg kick lands there for Smith.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Smith dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Smith throws a hook but Kopp avoids it easily.
Smith lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Kopp avoids the head kick by Smith.

Kopp drives through and clinches with Smith against the cage.
Smith working hard to break the clinch.
Smith is trying to break the clinch but Kopp has him pressed against the cage.
Smith is looking to break free of the clinch but Kopp has double underhooks.
Kopp wants to break the clinch but can't.

Smith's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Smith stuns Kopp with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Smith lands a head kick. Kopp smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

It looked like Kopp was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Smith wants to break free but Kopp has control.

Smith pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Smith jabbing away but nothing is landing.
John Smith seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Smith swinging wildly here.
Kopp shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Kopp avoids the body shot from Smith.
Smith misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Kopp.
Smith swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Nice uppercut lands for Smith. That snapped Kopp's head back.
Smith throws a head kick that half lands.
Thomas Kopp is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A big right from Smith misses.
Kopp slips under a jab.
A swing and a miss from Smith.
Kopp shoots in looking for a takedown. Smith tries to sprawl out of it but Kopp keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Smith manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Smith throws out a counter right but Kopp avoids it with no problem.

Kopp on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Smith throws a body shot but no joy.
A little feinted left hand from Kopp on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Smith looks to land a combination but Kopp avoids it well.
Kopp bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Kopp throws a quick counter head kick but Smith was just out of range.
Smith thows a left - swing and a miss!
John Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Kopp moves out of range of the leg kick from Smith.
Smith scores with a hook to the body. Kopp takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.

Smith tries to keep at a distance but Kopp has taken the fight into the clinch.
A right handed body shot lands from Kopp.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Kopp shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Kopp showed some decent athleticism there.

Smith has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Kopp is on him like a limpet, forcing Smith back against the cage.

Smith manages to break the clinch.
Kopp takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Kopp avoids the body shot from Smith.
Kopp shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
A head kick from Smith lands but Kopp takes it in his stride.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Kopp clinches with his opponent.
Smith wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Kopp has him pressed against the cage.
Smith keeps control of Kopp as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Kopp definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Smith wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Smith throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Kopp blocks it with crossed arms.
Kopp tries for a takedown but Smith manages to get underhooks.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Smith wants to get back to striking at distance but Kopp won't allow it.

Smith breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Kopp moves out of range as Smith strikes.
A big right from Smith misses.
Kopp wants to clinch up but Smith keeps it at a distance.

Kopp moves into the clinch successfully.
Kopp has Smith pressed against the cage, preventing Smith from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Smith's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Kopp keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Smith.
Kopp wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Kopp is looking to score with low kicks.
Smith throws an overhand right that lands on Kopp's shoulder, as Kopp tries to avoid the shot.
Smith throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
John Smith is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Smith darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Smith throws a body punch but Kopp moves out of range.
Smith throws a push kick but Kopp slaps the foot to one side.
Kopp takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Smith keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
No luck with that takedown attempt from Kopp.
Thomas Kopp has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Smith lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
