PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Mack Griffin (ranked 23909 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jet Lii (ranked 4584 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jet Lii was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mack Griffin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jet Lii!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Shigeki Fujiwara and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lii shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Griffin manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Lii stays in close to Griffin's body and controls the position.
Griffin trying to control the position.
Lii content to stall in guard here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Griffin is controlling Lii's posture.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Lii passes Griffin's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Lii wants to work for an arm triangle but Griffin is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Still in half guard, Lii seems content to control.

Lii looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Lii looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Griffin keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Griffin crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Lii - the referee stops the clock and Griffin gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Lii. Griffin manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Lii scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Lii decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Lii lands with a kick to the temple. Griffin shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Jet Lii seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Lii shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Griffin is trying to defend but Lii finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lii not doing much here.
Lii passes to full mount!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Lii takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Lii prevents Griffin from getting the reversal.
Griffin is working hard here to advance position.
Griffin manages to work a leg through to get back to half guard here. Good work there by Griffin, under a barage of strikes from Lii.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jet Lii dominated that round.
That's time! Griffin's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Griffin really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Lii closes the distance and clinches.
Lii stalls.
Lii prevents a takedown attempt there.
Griffin can't break the clinch.
Griffin wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Lii has him pressed against the cage.

Griffin tries to roll over but Lii keeps him under control.

Griffin is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Griffin is looking for a sweep. Lii is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Lii seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Lii postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Griffin to stand up.

Lii moves into range and clinches up with Griffin.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Griffin trying to stall but Lii improves his position.
Griffin tries to score a body lock takedown but Lii shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Griffin looking to stall.
Lii should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Lii pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Lii pushes Griffin up against the cage in a clinch.

Lii pulls guard.
Lii has Griffin pulled in close to control his posture.
Griffin has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Lii is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Griffin is aware though and is defending well.
Jet Lii has got the better of the ground game so far.
Griffin throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Lii looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Lii avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Griffin wants to control from the top but Lii keeps moving.
Lii has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Lii striking off his back but it's not causing Griffin any problems.
Griffin throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Lii works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Griffin gets caught flat footed, as Lii shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Griffin is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Griffin can't keep his opponent in guard - Lii advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Lii takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Griffin is looking to control Lii's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Griffin avoid being mounted?
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Griffin is looking to improve his position.
Lii wants to free his trapped foot but Griffin is holding on for dear life with his legs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jet Lii showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Griffin utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Lii content to stall in guard here.

Lii stands up and waves to Griffin to follow him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lii dives in and scores a takedown into Griffin's guard.

Griffin manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Lii is pressed up against the cage. Griffin has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Lii down to the mat. Lii avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Lii throws a series of strikes that have Griffin backpedaling.


Griffin is rocked!

Lii dives in and gets a big takedown. He lands in full mount and immediately unloads a series of heavy strikes! Griffin has had enough and taps out.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:40 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Jet Lii!
