TWGC 26 (155lbs, D4): Finals - Round 1 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a lightweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between vh ff (ranked 4782 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ken Irrawaddy (ranked 4356 p4p, 418 weight class). Irrawaddy has chosen Laos Rules! as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Ken Irrawaddy told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Rio de Janeiro, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 0 losses; vh ff! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 0 losses; Ken Irrawaddy!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, James Ackerman and James Glass.


The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.

Irrawaddy shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

ff is trying to get back to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Irrawaddy perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

ff actively working from the bottom here.
Irrawaddy slows the pace down in half guard.
It looks like Irrawaddy might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
ff is trying to get back to full guard.
Irrawaddy is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Irrawaddy is thwarting ff's attempts to control the position.

Irrawaddy is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for ff!

ff tries to hold on but Irrawaddy postures up.

Irrawaddy keeps control of the position easily here as ff tries to buck him off.

ff trying to control the action but Irrawaddy just sinks the hooks in.
Irrawaddy has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of ff's body.
ff is in bad spot here.
Irrawaddy really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for ff.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

ff trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
ff looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
ff manages to reverse the position and now he's in Irrawaddy's guard. Nice work there by ff.

Irrawaddy pulls ff in close to prevent any damage.

ff has gone for a leg lock! Irrawaddy slips out almost immediately though and dives into ff's guard.

ff is trying to control the position from the bottom.

ff wants to sweep here but Irrawaddy controlling him for the moment.
Irrawaddy is stalling in the full guard.
ff controls Irrawaddy momentarily but Irrawaddy frees himself.
Irrawaddy slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

ff tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Irrawaddy wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
ff seems a little lost for a moment, as Irrawaddy dominates the positioning.
ff is trying to get back to half guard.
Irrawaddy moves into full mount!

ff tries to lock up and control but Irrawaddy gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
ff is looking to get to half guard.
Irrawaddy takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Let's hope that Irrawaddy has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Irrawaddy has the hooks in. ff is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
I would not like to be ff right now.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Irrawaddy.

ff looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
You know, I was talking to some of our celebrities at ringside tonight and they were split right down the middle on who was going to win this fight.

That's nine minutes gone in the round.
Yet more stalling tactics from Irrawaddy.
ff is trying to break free.
ff is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Irrawaddy.

That's ten minutes gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on ff's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Irrawaddy biding his time, controlling ff.

ff tries to break free.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Irrawaddy controlling the positon.
Irrawaddy's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
I really don't envy ff right now.
Irrawaddy just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.

ff is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
