PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Bobby Bianchi (ranked 604 p4p, 78 weight class) and Damen Mayer (ranked 1095 p4p, 135 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Bobby Bianchi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 12 - 1, fighting out of New York, Damen Mayer!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Gwen Towbar and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bianchi ducks under a wild hook from Mayer.
A little feinted left hand from Bianchi on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
The fighters circling - Bianchi throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Mayer has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Mayer gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Mayer blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

Mayer looking to hit a scissor sweep but Bianchi is one step ahead there.
Bianchi has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Mayer is proving hard to escape from.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Mayer fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Bianchi manages to avoid it.
Mayer misses with an uppercut. Bianchi saw that one coming.

Bianchi tries to sprawl but Mayer drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Bianchi is trying to stand.
Bianchi is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Mayer's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Mayer's back!

Mayer trying to control the hands but Bianchi won't let him.
Mayer is trying to break free.
Bianchi tries to get the hooks in deep but Mayer pushed the leg off.
Mayer wants to escape the position.
Bianchi is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
Bianchi has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Bianchi continues to stall.
Bianchi controlling well, preventing Mayer from escaping the position.
Bianchi controls the action.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mayer turns into Bianchi and is now in his guard.

Bianchi pushes Mayer off and scrambles back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Bobby Bianchi will probably get the nod.
That's time! Bianchi's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Mayer thows a left - swing and a miss!
It looked like Bianchi wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
A decent looking cross lands there for Mayer.
Mayer shoots in and drives through. Bianchi sprawls well.

Mayer feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Mayer wants to pass the guard but Bianchi is keeping the position.
Bianchi manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mayer manages to get himself to full guard.


Bianchi got a little sloppy there for a moment and Mayer has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Bianchi has managed to get both his arms back between Mayer's legs - danger averted.
Mayer can't keep his opponent in guard - Bianchi advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Bianchi uses his free foot to push down on Mayer's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Mayer.
Mayer wants to hold on but Bianchi pushes him away.

Bianchi wants to control but instead Mayer manages to regain half guard.
Mayer is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Bianchi wants to take a breather but Mayer is having none of it.
Mayer is trying to get back to full guard.

Bianchi seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Mayer wants to get back to full guard.
Bianchi wants to stand up but Mayer is controlling the position.

Mayer wants to control but Bianchi is keeping busy.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Mayer tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Bianchi swivels and escapes.

Damen Mayer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mayer will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Bobby Bianchi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Damen Mayer.

That was a close second round but I would say that Bobby Bianchi will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Bianchi ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Mayer moves away.

Mayer has gone for a leg lock! Bianchi slips out almost immediately though and dives into Mayer's guard.

Damen Mayer has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Bobby Bianchi.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Bianchi, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
