PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hideo Kenta (ranked 24664 p4p, 0 weight class) and Arturs Shelby (ranked 4429 p4p, 0 weight class). Kenta's entrance music is ISIS. A fine choice. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Hideo Kenta!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 1, fighting out of The Island, Arturs Shelby!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, Peter Branson and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kenta throws a half hearted mid kick.
Kenta misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Shelby is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Kenta displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Shelby.

Kenta throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Shelby tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Kenta is in Shelby's guard.

Shelby escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kenta gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shelby avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Shelby really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kenta. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Kenta would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Shelby is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Shelby shoots in looking for a takedown. Kenta tries to sprawl out of it but Shelby keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kenta manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Hideo Kenta seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shelby throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Shelby shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Kenta pinned against the cage. Kenta gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Hideo Kenta has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Arturs Shelby.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Shelby swats away the attempt to clinch by Kenta.
Kenta tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Shelby paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Kenta shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Shelby is trying to defend but Kenta finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Shelby wants to stand back up but Kenta manages to pass into side control.
Kenta creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
You can see the frustration on Shelby's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Kenta is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Shelby has escaped the position, nice work there.
Shelby is trying to control Kenta's posture but Kenta avoids it.
Shelby dodges the ground and pound from Kenta.
Kenta wants to stand but Shelby is controlling his arm.
Shelby is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Shelby is trying to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Shelby is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Kenta looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Kenta wants to stand but Shelby is controlling his arm.

Kenta has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Kenta is looking to take a break and control but Shelby is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Kenta decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Hideo Kenta overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Kenta closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Shelby scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Kenta manages to mount him!

Kenta wants to stand but Shelby is controlling his posture from full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kenta looking to sit in guard and control but Shelby gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. And we move into the final round!



Kenta closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Shelby did well to prevent Kenta getting side control.

Shelby has one foot on Kenta's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Kenta shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Shelby manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Kenta manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Shelby on his heels. He'll look to pass Shelby's guard now, I'm sure.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kenta loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Shelby is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Kenta tries to stand but Shelby is controlling from the bottom.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Kenta is working Shelby over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Kenta could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Shelby is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Kenta is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Hideo Kenta.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kenta, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
