TWGC 27 (185lbs, D3): Montreal Qualifier - Round 1 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a middleweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (ranked 6494 p4p, 516 weight class) and Carter Mann (ranked 2645 p4p, 0 weight class). Mann is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by "Fingerbang". Carter Mann told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

And in the blue corner, fighting out of London, with a TWGC record of 4 wins and 3 losses; Carter Mann!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Alec Ball and Gregory Folan.

Mann has control of Leibniz's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Leibniz regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Leibniz tries to hold on but Mann pushes him away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mann is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Leibniz is surviving well by controlling Mann's body position as best he can.

Mann wants to finish this one by submission but Leibniz is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Mann.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Leibniz stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mann swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Leibniz drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Leibniz jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Mann is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Mann is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Leibniz is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Mann is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Mann has escaped and now he's on top!

Mann avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Leibniz escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mann gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Leibniz might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Leibniz is looking for a triangle but Mann pushes his legs off easily.
Mann wants to control from the top but Leibniz keeps moving.

Leibniz has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Mann can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Mann slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Mann is looking to take a break and control but Leibniz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Leibniz is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Mann off and has taken his back!

Mann has hold of Leibniz's arm. He needs to escape this position sooner or later but for now he's happy enough to control the position and prevent the submission attempts.

Leibniz is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Mann knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Mann for a finish.

Leibniz is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Mann is defending well though. Leibniz let's go of the attempt for now.

Leibniz has the hooks in. Mann is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Mann is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Leibniz gets his way!

Leibniz is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Mann has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Leibniz has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Mann taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Leibniz doesn't care though - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 9:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz!
