PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Joey Diaz (ranked 1488 p4p, 193 weight class) and Eric Bloodaxe (ranked 1904 p4p, 228 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joey Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 14 - 0, fighting out of New York, Eric Bloodaxe!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Jack Bonds and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diaz takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Bloodaxe ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Diaz moves away.

Bloodaxe with a lazy takedown attempt

Bloodaxe scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Diaz manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Bloodaxe keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Diaz ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Diaz no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Bloodaxe is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
We've been hearing good reports from Diaz's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Diaz wants to stand but Bloodaxe is controlling the position.

Diaz is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Bloodaxe is controlling him.

Diaz trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Bloodaxe shoots in for a double leg but Diaz sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Bloodaxe shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Diaz's guard.
Diaz is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Diaz scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Diaz misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Diaz scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Diaz explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Diaz throws a quick inside leg kick.
Diaz feints and then cracks Bloodaxe's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Bloodaxe down.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Bloodaxe.
Joey Diaz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Eric Bloodaxe.

Diaz fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Bloodaxe.

Diaz uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Bloodaxe.
Diaz lands a leg kick that knocks Bloodaxe off balance momentarily.
Diaz throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Diaz lands with an uppercut that bounces Bloodaxe off the cage and back into range.
Bloodaxe closes the distance and clinches up with Diaz, looking for a takedown. Bloodaxe pushes Diaz against the cage but Diaz circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
A head kick from Diaz lands but Bloodaxe takes it in his stride.


It looks like Eric Bloodaxe has been cut.

Diaz has his feet on Bloodaxe's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


A slapping body kick lands there for Diaz.
Diaz throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Diaz lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Diaz misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Bloodaxe fails to land the takedown.
Bloodaxe tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
No joy there for Diaz, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Bloodaxe shoots in but no luck this time.

and Bloodaxe takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Joey Diaz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Eric Bloodaxe.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Diaz enables Bloodaxe to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Diaz manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Diaz pushes Bloodaxe off and scrambles back to his feet.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Bloodaxe shoots for a takedown but Diaz saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Bloodaxe takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Eric Bloodaxe seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Bloodaxe walks into a left hand.
Diaz tries a head kick but it misses.
Bloodaxe shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Diaz sprawls well. Diaz wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Bloodaxe gets slowly back to his feet.
Bloodaxe has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Diaz.

Diaz gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Diaz kicks Bloodaxe off and gets to his feet.

Bloodaxe looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Diaz!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Bloodaxe sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Diaz is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Bloodaxe decides to stand back up.

Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Diaz, as that shot connected.

Bloodaxe shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Diaz sprawls well. Diaz wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Bloodaxe gets slowly back to his feet.

Diaz is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
