PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between King Kong (ranked 1370 p4p, 161 weight class) and Brendan Schlaub (ranked 2308 p4p, 239 weight class). Kong comes to the cage accompanied by Moviendo las Caderas. Brendan Schlaub told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A nice inside leg kick there by Kong. That's going to slow Schlaub down.
Kong defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Schlaub.

Schlaub gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Kong tries to break free but Schlaub pushes him back against the cage.

Schlaub is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Kong can't fight it off and eventually Schlaub manages to take the fight to the floor. Kong looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Schlaub perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Schlaub sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Schlaub tries to clinch there but Kong circles away.

Schlaub shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Kong as he avoids it easily.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Kong here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Schlaub changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Kong tries to avoid it but Schlaub manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Kong to the ground. Kong escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

I was talking to Kong's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
