PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Xander Machado (ranked 1034 p4p, 32 weight class) and Norman Pederson (ranked 15826 p4p, 171 weight class). Machado comes to the cage accompanied by Latin Thugs. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Xander Machado!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Norman Pederson!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Stewart Dunkirk and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pederson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Machado moves forwards but Pederson connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Pederson thows a left - swing and a miss!
Pederson throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Machado.
Machado appears to be looking for a big counter.
Pederson listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Machado throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Pederson loads up on a big right hand but Machado slips the punch.
Pederson finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
A telegraphed right hand from Pederson misses the target.
Machado walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Machado scores with a head kick.
Machado has a takedown stuffed.
Machado moves out of range as Pederson strikes.
We've been informed that Pederson has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
Pederson misses with a double jab.
Machado closes the distance and clinches up with Pederson, looking for a takedown. Machado pushes Pederson against the cage but Pederson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Pederson swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.

Machado gets the takedown into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Pederson gets back to half guard.
Pederson trying to hold on to Machado's head to control him but Machado postures up.
Machado is looking to advance position but Pederson won't allow it.
Machado slows the pace down in half guard.
Pederson slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Machado advances position into side control!

Machado is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Pederson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Pederson is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Machado tries to move to mount but Pederson blocks the move with his legs.
Machado creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Pederson sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Machado is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Pederson is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Pederson regains half guard there - taking advantage of Machado's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.

Machado is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Pederson has managed to free his arm - good work.
Pederson is trying to maintain the position but Machado is very close to passing his half guard.
Pederson flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Pederson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Pederson.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Machado content to stall in guard here.
Pederson controls Machado momentarily but Machado frees himself.
Machado wants to pass the guard but Pederson is keeping the position.
Pederson pulls Machado in close to prevent any damage.
Pederson tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Machado stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pederson swivels though and keeps the full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Norman Pederson will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Pederson throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Pederson dives in and grabs Machado's left leg, looking for a takedown. Machado pushes down on Pederson's head and hops out.
Machado avoids the body shot from Pederson.
A quick step to the side and Machado tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.

Machado fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Pederson sprawls well initially but Machado persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Machado looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Xander Machado overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Pederson is trying to stand back up but Machado is controlling him
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Machado trying to control from Pederson's half guard. Pederson has other ideas though and has regained full guard.

Pederson keeping moving, preventing Machado from controlling successfully.

Machado stays in close to Pederson's body and controls the position.

Pederson throws his legs up looking for a submission but Machado uses it to pass to side control.

Machado thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Machado working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Pederson is trying to control Machado's posture but Machado avoids it.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Pederson is not content to let Machado control the position.

Pederson might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Machado haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Machado tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Machado has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Machado is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Pederson looks calm but he's in trouble here. Machado gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Pederson is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Machado lets go of the hold and Pederson can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:50 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Xander Machado!
A relieved looking Xander Machado thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
