Dignam throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

Coltrane shoots in for a takedown but Ling shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.#CL#

Parker gets caught napping as Coltrane dives in and scores a takedown. Parker manages to retain guard.
Coltrane tries to free his leg and advance position but Parker is retaining full guard.
Parker pulls Coltrane in close to prevent any damage.
Coltrane working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Coltrane trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Parker manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! #REVB##SUB#

Coltrane drops his hands momentarily and Paterson takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. #CUT2#
It looks like John Coltrane has been cut.
Coltrane darts in looking for a takedown but Paterson gets double underhooks and turns Coltrane into the cage.
Paterson misses with a two punch combination. #TD#
Coltrane shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Paterson 's guard.
Paterson wants to stand and escape but Coltrane is having none of it.
Coltrane stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Paterson swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Paterson is wriggling around but Coltrane manages to pass to half guard. #SUB#
Coltrane has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Paterson defend it? Coltrane steps over the head and cranks it - Paterson is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Coltrane!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). John Coltrane!
