Thabo was raised in the Kalahari of the Northern Cape. His parents are cattle farmers. He studied agriculture at Stellenbosch University and started fighting at age 20. He joined his father's farming business after he finished his degree. After three seasons of drought, his family sold the farm and his parents settled in Cape Town. Thabo pledged to buy back the family farm one day and continue farming. He is also an avid chess player and was part of the University Chess Team.
