We are getting close to the end of 2014 and this is the time when we look over the best of the current year in the annual GAMMA fighter of the year awards! These will be the 6th such awards in the storied history of the organization. No organization in the planet has held 6 consecutive awards.

In our long history we have seen some of the greatest fighters compete in our organization such as Renan St Juste, Simon Williams, Keith Green, Anton Chigurh, Raz Matazz, Mikhail Yudovich, Alexander Khalifman and of course possibly the best this game has ever seen in Jeremy Tonal. This year though we will see a totally new group of 3 fighters hold onto the top 3 spots!

Here are the candidates to win the awards.

Kyle Carlton (123905)
5-2 inside GAMMA, 7-5 overall
2 time 265+ champion with 2 title defenses.

The best 265+ fighter in GAMMA for the year. He had basically cleared out most of the division so far since joining Syn. He also beat the #4 candidate Kenichi "The Strongest Disciple" Shirahama. His trilogy with Willy Stoppers is probably the best of the season. His record though outside of GAMMA was less than impressive. He was on a poor run to begin the year and in his one super fight against top dog Daniel Silva he lost, so at this point he is a very unlikely candidate to win the award. He could slip into the top 3 depending on results though.

Kenichi "The Strongest Disciple" Shirahama (112324)
9-5 inside GAMMA
Olympic Silver Medal
265lbs champion

One of the all time favorites in GAMMA history with multiple title wins at 265lbs. He failed in his mission to capture the 265lbs title after losing to Kyle Carlton and previously Simon Williams, but that does not take anything away from his performance at 265lbs and his overall GAMMA legacy. He was also the highest ranking fighter in the first ever Tycoon Olympics winning the Silver medal at 265lbs. He had a couple of major upsets to get to that point, losing only to Douglas in the finals. Probably a big outsider for winning the award, however he could scrape into the top 3 for the year.

Ein Stein (182566)
8-1 inside GAMMA, 10-1 overall
145lbs champ with 3 defenses

Ein Stein is arguably already the best 145lbs fighter in GAMMA history and he is just 29y of age. The 145lbs division though is very young as we just created it around a year ago. With a 10-1 overall record and 8-1 in GAMMA, you could say his year has been close to perfect. He avenged his one loss against Auguste Grimm and has just won his first super fight with a win over Aaron Witt. Recently entered the TWGC and an impressive performance in the tournament could skyrocket him up these rankings. The only real thing keeping him back is the quality of the competition at 145lbs.

Kris Hong (204017)
6-0-2 inside GAMMA, 10-0-2 overall (4 fights in GAMMA: Contenders)
185lbs champion, 1 defense

Kris is arguably the biggest prospect in MMA today at just 26y of age. He has had a near perfect season with just 2 draws and has had some major wins over Olympian Sergei Kravinoff, Jonny Victorio, Usain Watts among others. The downside is that he has only had 8 fights in GAMMA, 6 of which were wins, the rest came in our contenders organization earlier in the year. If the awards were given in Spring, he could had been the #1 contender to winning it, however who knows, a few major losses on the top, could change everything.

Jesse Custer (183716)
11-2 inside GAMMA
2 time 205lbs champion with 4 defenses

Jesse has been on a tear all year. He avenged losses to both Adis Djurdjevic and Ender Wiggin and then won his own trilogy against Johnny Victorio. He had 7 fight and 8 fight winning streaks during the year and end of last and was also 3-0 in his super fights. He was basically cruising for the #1 fighter of the year award waiting for Russ to slip up. What nobody expected was that he would loose his title fight against MMA Tycoon HOFer Scotty Bennet. A lot is now on the line in their rematch as a win here and a loss for Russ can move him into the prime position.

Russ Rutger (62373)
11-1 inside GAMMA, 14-2 overall
170lbs champion, with 5 defenses

Russ joined us as a decent level veteran, many thought in the twilight of his career. What was to follow though is a story for the legends. The 38y old went on a 11 fight winning streak, which is one of the most impressive ever. He did this is a very deep 170lbs division and moved into #3 spot p4p in the world while doing it. He won 2 fights against Cole River (the then champ) and regained his honor after beating Jurmas Uusisto twice (a fighter he previously lost 2x to while in Versus). The stain to his year was the last super fight against Johnny Fantastic. In his upcoming fight he faces long time GAMMA legend and ex#1 Renan St Juste. A win there could secure him the GAMMA fighter of the year.

It will be an exciting end of the month, so anything could happen, good luck to all the candidates!
