Boxing Day Bash presented by Soul Supremacy Fight Club- Review
Hello, Steve Hickson here with your review of Boxing Day Bash.

Ryan Couture (3-7) vs. Frank White (1-2)

The first fight of the evening was a bantamweight fight between Ryan Couture and Frank White.  Couture started firing right away, and never let up.  White looked out of breath from the start, so it was only a matter of time until Couture finished it.  White tried for a takedown, but was countered and stopped at only :26 of the first round.

Winner by tko Ryan Couture

Jay Jackson (3-2) vs. Lleyton Stiels (3-1)

The next fight was a bantamweight fight between Jay Jackson and former title challenger Lleyton Stiels. Jackson is a well rounded fighter, while Stiels is a Muay Thai specialist.  Stiels immediately clinched up looking for knees.  He was able to land some nice shots, while avoiding most of Jackson’s strikes.  The rest of the round mostly involved the two trading takedowns, with Jackson probably doing better work on the ground.  The second round started the same way with Stiels clinching, and landing a takedown for points.  Jackson got back to his feet quickly, but Stiels again forced him into the clinch.  Neither fighter landed much, but Stiels was usually more dominate.  The second ended with Stiels landing another takedown.  The third round went similar to the second, with Stiels clinching and landing takedowns.   This time Stiels was more aggressive after landing one in mount.  He still was unable to land anything significant, but controlled the entire round.  All three judges scored it 30-27 for Stiels.

Winner by unanimous decision Lleyton Stiels

Hugh Akston (2-1) vs. Flavio Ferreira

The third fight of the evening was a middleweight matchup between Hugh Akston and Flavio Ferreira.  This was a matchup between strikers, with Ferreira being a great boxer and Akston having good muay thai.  Akston jumped into the clinch early, and started working at a furious pace.  Akston continued until he rocked him with a huge elbow, then finished him with knees.  A great example of excellent clinch work by Akston.

Winner by tko Hugh Akston

Hank Rearden (2-0) vs. Matthew Smith (5-4)

The next fight was a light heavyweight fight between rising prospect Hank Rearden and the former champion Matthew Smith.  The only part of Rearden’s game we hadn’t seen was his ground game.  Smith decided to test it early by countering a sloppy punch with a takedown.  Rearden looked pretty good early, even sweeping at one point.  Smith kept attacking from the bottom, and eventually wrapped up a triangle.  Rearden tried to fight it off, but ultimately had to tap at 3:42 of the first round.

Winner by submission Hank Rearden

Harry Tran (2-6) vs. Dudley Moorer (3-5)

The next fight on the docket was a lightweight fight between Harry Tran and Dudley Moorer.  Both fighters came in with lengthy losing streaks, so both needed the win badly.  Moorer dominated the early part of the fight with superior striking.  Tran wanted to clinch badly, but was not able to initiate a solid clinch until the end of the round.  Moorer was much less active in round two, but Tran still wasn’t able to do much other than try to clinch.  The third round started the same as the second, with neither fighter really doing much offensively.  Moorer landed a takedown midway through the round, but did nothing with it before being stood up.  Tran was able to clinch late in the round again, but didn’t have enough time to land any significant blows.  The judges scored it 30-27, 30-28, and 30-28 for Moorer.

Winner by unanimous decision Dudley Moorer

Craig Stevenson (5-4) vs. Zachary Mendoza (7-3)

The first fight on the main card was a bantamweight fight between the former title holder Craig Stevenson and promotional newcomer Zachary Mendoza.  Stevenson seemed to have the advantage on the ground on paper, so it was no surprise he took it there early.  Mendoza was able to control from the bottom though, and forced the standup.  Mendoza then went to work on the feet, knocking Stevenson with a quick combo.  Stevenson survived, and actually found a little success in the clinch but Mendoza still dominated most of the round.  Stevenson worked hard in the second to get a takedown, but Mendoza’s defense was stellar.  Stevenson was much more aggressive with his standup, but Mendoza avoided most of the shots.  Mendoza did a good job staying at distance, and was able to control much of the round with his striking.  The third round was similar to the first, with Mendoza again winning on the feet but Stevenson landing a takedown.  Mendoza was able to force another standup, and continued to win the striking exchanges.  As the round came to a close, it seemed that Mendoza would win a dominant decision.  That was until he landed a huge combo late and forced the stoppage.  The win earned him a shot at current champion Jonny Webbs.

Winner by tko Zachary Mendoza

Eric Brooks (4-3) vs. Ken Danagger (1-0)

The next fight was a lightweight fight between Eric Brooks and Ken Danagger.  Brooks landed an early takedown, but was quickly swept by Danagger.  Danagger used the top position to throw some ground and pound, but was mostly ineffective.  Danagger tried for another punch, but this time Brooks threw his legs up and locked in a triangle to finish at 1:38 of the first round.

Winner by submission Erick Brooks

Luke Lashley (14-14) vs. Kayce Sagraves (3-1)

The next fight was also a lightweight fight, this time between former title holder Luke Lashley and former title challenger Kayce Sagraves.  Sagraves is a wrestling specialist, but it was Lashley who landed the early takedown.  Sagraves was able to get up, but was unable to do much after that.  Lashley landed punches at will before landing a second takedown.  This time he ended up in mount, and started raining down punches until the referee had no choice but to stop it.

Winner by tko Luke Lashley

Bushido Brown (17-11) vs. Rick Grimes (4-0)

The co-main event was a middleweight title fight between the champion Bushido Brown and the challenger Rick Grimes.  Grimes is a grappling specialist, and needed to get it to the mat as quickly as he could.  He tried, but Brown was ready and stuffed every attempt.  Grimes had nothing for Brown on the feet.  Brown landed everything he threw, including a big combo that sent Grimes to the ground out cold.

Winner by knockout Bushido Brown

Francois Dubonet (23-19-1) vs. Colby Cash (6-0-1)

The main event was a lightweight title fight between the champion Francois Dubonet and Colby Cash.  The strangest stat was that Dubonet had 100% striking defense, while Cash had 100% striking accuracy.  Both would change in this fight.  Dubonet was the much more active fighter, while Cash was looking to counter.  Cash was able to land when he threw, but his lack of action was his undoing.  Dubonet landed a big right that wobbled Cash, and just when Cash seemed to get righted Dubonet dropped him with another one.

Winner by tko Francois Dubonet
