CFC Update/Event Preview

Event Preview: CFC 295: La Belle Event PPV 5
Canadian Fighting Championship
2013-02-17, Montreal, Belle Centre
Author:

It’s been a while since I’ve provided an update so I just wanted to quickly run through things with you all as February is shaping up to be a huge month for us.  We are currently slated to have two massive events in the next few weeks, including CFC 295, our organization’s fifth ever PPV and first ever event in the 21,500 Belle Centre and then, just 10 days later, CFC 297, the 4th Anniversary show.  For those of you who don’t know, the Canadian Fighting Championship was founded on the very first day MMA Tycoon opened to the public, as is the only promotion to have operated since opening. We are the first organization to reach the four year milestone, and it’s because of all of you.

Don't forget to place your bets for this weekend's fight card at the CFC Casino here: http://mmatycoon.com/bookmakerpublic.php?bid=7045

Just a heads up that most of the 4 Year Anniversary card won’t be set until after CFC 295 on February 17.  Obviously a lot of those fights are going to influence who gets spots on that coveted card.

First up though is CFC 295, and here is a preview of the top six fights on the card as they will likely comprise the two hour pay per view portion of the event.

CFC 295: La Belle Event Preview

The main event of the evening is a spectacular featherweight superfight featuring CFC 145 lbs champion Roddy Piper and Danny Power, the number one and number two fighters in the world in the division. Piper is riding a nine fight winning streak at 145 pounds, including a gritty TKO defence most recently against Roll Fizzlebeef.  This is actually Piper’s second run as the champ as he previously held the title briefly in 2011 as well.  Piper is a well-rounded fighter fighter offensively and defensively, but he tends to use his technique on the feet to mark up his opponents. “Dangerous” Danny Power may have a slight edge in power, but the Ascension champ has only went the distance in two five-round fights in his career. Look for Piper to drag this contest into the championship rounds and use his experience to gut out a narrow decision win.

Just before the little guys is the big boys. Completing a trilogy of fights, Bob Chong tries to win the series against Spartacus Thracian. The first time they met, Thracian upset the champion in dominant fashion, decisioning him 49-46 across the scorecards. The re-match looked like it would be much of the same after Thracian won the opening round by securing a takedown and keeping the fight grounded. But in the second round Chong kept the fight standing and blasted Thracian with a right before finishing him off. This one will be a contest between wrestling and counter-wrestling.

Pedro Bueno won the middlweight title by upsetting Remy LeBeau. Between that fight and this weekend’s contest he travelled to Australia to try and climb the global rankings but came back a wounded warrior after getting dismantled by world #1 Matt Murdock. Now he’s trying to get back to his winning ways against an opponent who has spent the past month training exclusively for the rematch. Lebeau is a bit better rounded, but that didn’t help him the last time.  Look for Bueno to try to control the fight in the clinch while keeping up a higher rate of strikes.

Not to be outdone, the welterweight championship is also up for grabs on Sunday when Osama Robins tries to ride his three fight winning streak through highly-touted champion Don Wilson. Robins is an accurate striker who can mix in takedowns to secure rounds.  Wilson is a young megastar, having captured the prestigious CFC welterweight title at the age of 26. Solid on the feet and aggressive with his takedowns, Wilson is a threat everywhere during a fight. He’s a challenging opponent to predict and gameplan for.

Jai Malek has lost to both the fighters in the heavyweight title fight, but he’s hoping a win against Ameri CanChopper will put him right back into the title picture. He’s a striker with very, very dangerous power. Unfortunately he has been put down and out in five of his contests as well. Fortunately for him, CanChopper is a similar mix of raw power (13 KOs in 14 career wins) and evidence that standing and banging has consequences (all seven career losses by knockout).  You can pretty much take it to the bank that this slugfest won’t go to the cards.

After holding the WW title for almost all of 2012, the start of 2013 has been one to forget for Antonio Montana who has dropped two fights. But he remains a fan favourite and a stalwart contender in the division. He’s bring his mix of talented striking, power, and surprising grappling prowess to the cage against CFC newcomer Athan Stamatis, a grappler of considerable ability. The winner of this fight climbs up the divisional rankings and likely earns an appearance on the anniversary show.

It’s also worth noting that CFC mainstay Mark Kermodian also appears on this card. He’s been with the promotion since April 10, 2009, where he debuted with a loss at CFC 12. He has 51 appearances in the promotion and a win this weekend will move him into a tie with Jesper Rush for most total wins in the CFC history (26).
