Author:Lyle Humphreys

Thanks To Marcus for the Preview, 1 fight has still to be confirmed but he has written about it anyway if it does happen.

TRFC 13 is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by Tokyo Rage Fight Club on March 2, 2013 at The Underground arena in Tokyo, Japan.

Background

Damien Penn became the inaugural champion at TRFC 5 with a third round submission over striking standout Tokyo Drift. Damien has successfully defended his belt on two separate occasions with all of his title fights ending by way of Armbar.

Standing across from the fearsome champion will be former ONE FC bantamweight champion Darwin France. Darwin was the last standing champion in his division when the league closed down. Will Darwin be able to cement his legacy as perhaps one of the best submission fighters of his era? Find out at TRFC 13!

The Action

-[Featherweight bout] Tokyo Drift (6-10) vs. Chris Michaels (3-4)

-[Preview] Former title hopeful Tokyo Drift will look to snap his losing skid against the boxing proficient Chris Michaels. Tokyo Drift can win this fight in the clinch or on the ground but he will need to avoid the powerful hands of Chris Michaels.

-[Heavyweight bout] Jon Johnson (3-4) vs. Mike Whitehead (5-3)

-[Preview] In a classic striker versus grappler contest, Jon Johnson will look to keep this fight standing while Mike Whitehead does everything in his power to take it to the ground. Whoever can assert their dominance early could very easily win this fight via dramatic stoppage.

-[Heavyweight bout] Eli Bernstein (4-1) vs. John Diaz (1-2)

-[Preview] The superbly well rounded Eli Bernstein will try to continue his march up the ranks when he takes on John Diaz. John really has one method of winning this fight which will either prove to be effective or to be a hindrance. Expect Diaz to go for the takedowns early because if he stands toe-to-toe and lets Bernstein tee off on him, it's good night Irene.

-[Heavyweight bout] Yegor Klitschko (3-1) vs. Dean Mccarry (5-1)

-[Preview] In this heavyweight attraction two powerhouse strikers will collide to decide who takes the ride to the peak of the mountain. Yegor is coming off three consecutive performances of outstanding quality. He started his win streak by dominating Jon Johnson and then utterly destroyed Vergara and Diaz. Against Dean Mccarry, however, he faces opposition he hasn't seen before. Mccarry is a newcomer to the division but should not be underrated by any means. He outboxed several opponents who were reported to be superior strikers. He beat them by being the tougher fighter. This matchup should be extremely competitive as both guys are comfortable rolling on the mat, pressing against the cage, but prefer to stand and trade bombs.

-[Heavyweight bout] Jimmy Karlsson (22-12) vs. Fedor Lesnar (20-24)

-[Preview] Fedor Lesnar is fresh off a failed title shot and looking to bounce back to the top. Rumors are abound that he took this fight with nagging injuries which could prove to be a mistake come fight night. Standing between Fedor and another shot at heavyweight glory is the former two time champion, Jimmy Karlsson. Jimmy is the former SMMA heavyweight champion and the former AFC light-heavyweight champion. Both of these guys love to go for submissions but are capable on their feet as well. With the skill sets so close in level, however, I fear that Lesnar's injuries could tip the tides in favor of his opposition here.

-[Featherweight bout] Floynny Pacweather Jr (5-1) vs. Daisuke Namazawa (2-3)

-[Preview] These two grapplers will collide with a very simple game plan in mind: submit the other guy and keep pushing until the bitter end. Despite Pacweather's impressive resume, the majority of his experience is against two guys on four separate occasions. Daisuke has a real chance to win this fight if he can keep it standing.

-[Middleweight bout] Saku Katsumoto (14-10) vs. Bio Hazzard (9-16)

-[Preview] Bio Hazzard, on paper, is clearly the more impressive fighter here. With one more fight than his opponent and a very well rounded skill set, he is a terrifying prospect. However, he is also on a lengthy losing skid that may continue if Saku Katsumoto can pull off a submission. Katsumoto has never been submitted in his professional career so it will be interesting to see what happens if this fight makes it to the ground.

-[Welterweight bout] Jay Wilkins (17-15) vs. Judas Theurophoroi (11-6)

-[Preview] This is an extremely evenly contested fight. Both of these guys are comfortable trading punches and kicks and both have gone everywhere that a fight can go. They each have a very clear means of victory in this fight. Jay Wilkins will likely want to get this fight down as quickly as he can so that he can work his advanced submission game. Judas, however, may find his best work will come in the clinch against this grappling monster. The Muay Thai of both fighters is outstanding, though, so you won't want to miss it!

-[Featherweight Championship bout] Darwin France (9-1) vs. Damien Penn(c) (6-1)

-[Preview] This is the kind of fight that mixed martial arts fans dream about. Damien Penn lost one of his earliest fights in the QFC tournament but many fans around the world believe that the fight may have been stopped a tad early. Since stepping into the world of professional mixed martial arts, Damien Penn has been all but unstoppable with five straight submission victories. He has successfully defended his title twice against stellar grappling competition.

Darwin France is on a seven fight unbeaten streak including back-to-back wins in TRFC. He has completed the majority of his takedown attempts and much like the champion has never been submitted. The question really is who has the better submission defense in this fight. Assuming that the Jujitsu battle leads to a stalemate (which is entirely plausible), whoever can stay on top and score with ground n pound could easily walk away from this fight as the featherweight champion of the world.
