EMMA 27 Preview

Event Preview: EMMA-27
AD Rising Stars
2013-04-03, Montreal, Hayashi's Lounge - Montreal
Author:Lucky Lefty

Good evening fight fans and welcome to Shining Eagle's Illuminating Previews and Pick 'Em's! Tonight's previews will feature the main card of EMMA 27 which will take place at Hayashi's Lounge in Montreal. This night's bouts will feature the lightweight, welterweight and heavyweight titles as well as some of the top ranked welterweights in the 170 division. Let's get this show on the road!

The first fight of EMMA 27's main card will be a welterweight contest:

Jet Li v Nate North

Jet Li is a veteran of EMMA that's been with us since our very first show. He had a bit of a bumpy start when he dropped a unanimous decision to Slim Crowe in his debut with us and then was forced into submission under the powerful ground striking of Max Ford at EMMA 7 but since then he has been riding a 3 fight win streak finishing 1 opponent by armbar, TKOing another and then bringing one fight the distance in a dominant unanimous decision over an EMMA newcomer. Li seems to be comfortable as a gatekeeper of the welterweight division and accepted his next fight against another new recruit to EMMA. He will be facing Nate North in his next fight this Wednesday. His biggest advantages in this fight are his muay thai and his BJJ brown belt. Li should be looking to keep this fight standing and mix it up with his punches and low kicks. He also has enough submission skills to make his opponent think twice about going to the ground with him and can work his way back to his feet if he ends up on his back but will still need to watch out for the wrestling skills that his opponent has. Nate "True" North is a newcomer to EMMA but is formerly of the world renowned IMMA. He recently moved to Montreal when he signed with EMMA and is now looking to build a name for himself in north america. North has gone 1-2 in his last 3 fights but those 2 losses were his only losses in his career and he has never been finished. With exceptional wrestling skills North will be looking to take this one to the mat where he can impose his will on his opponent. His purple belt in BJJ shows us that he should be careful on the ground but can still get the job done if he can be patient and avoid Li's submissions. Standing and trading wouldn't be as favourable for Nate North but with a granite chin it is unlikely he will get finished.

My pick is Nate North via UD

The next fight on this main card will be another welterweight bout:

Mos Def v Max Ford

"Mighty" Mos Def is a versatile submissionist that was at the top of the welterweight division until he met with Sonny Boom for the title. Since his fall from grace Def has fought only once, winning a unanimous decision over Stock Pile. He will be facing one of his toughest opponents yet when he gets into the cage with Max Ford this Wednesday. Ford represents his toughest challenge since falling out of title contention and winning this fight could send him back to the top of the welterweight division. He comes into this bout with remarkable muay thai skills and everything else is virtually identical in the 2 fighters skillsets except for Ford having the better boxing skills. Mos Def will want to put his kicks and knees to good use in the clinch and the standup and may have to look for submissions off his back if the fight lands on the ground but its not a lost cause if he does end up on his back. Def has plenty of ground experience and has earned 7 submission victories in his proffessional career. But Max Ford has some pretty heavy hands and some dangerous ground and pound to go with it along with very good boxing skills. Def will have to be careful both in the standup and on the ground if Ford has the top position. A submission is unlikely here but a KO wouldn't surprise me although it may still go the distance if Def can keep Ford at bay.

My pick is Max Ford via TKO in rd 3

The next fight on the main card will be for the heavyweight title:

Leonardo Ferreira v Jon Snow

Leonardo "Wrathchild" Ferreira came to EMMA a complete underdog. Before he debuted with us, he was on a 3 fight losing skid and had a proffessional record of 3-4. But 4 fights later he has knocked out every opponent within the first 3 minutes of round 1. Now on a 4 fight win streak, Ferreira will be looking to keep it going against Jon Snow the seasoned submissions specialist. "Wrathchild"'s advantages in this fight are in the standup where with his elite level muay thai and wonderful boxing. Will he be able to put on another tremendous display of striking magnificence and score yet another devastating knockout? Jon Snow would beg to differ. He may not be very spectacular in anything but he is quite remarkable all around and that may be good enough to win him the belt this Wednesday. His biggest advantage in this fight is his BJJ brown belt that has earned him 6 of his 9 victories by submission. If his Granite chin can hold up against the wrath of Ferreira's knockout power, he may be able to hang in there long enough to score a takedown and land some ground and pound and maybe even get the submission victory.

My pick is Ferreira via 2nd round TKO

The next fight of the evening will be another title bout this time for the welterweight title:

Bobby Digital v Wrestling Bot

If "RZA" Bobby Digital has shown us anything in his career it's that he can take the fight anywhere and still win. He has won all 6 of his bouts by (T)KO. He has shown us ground and pound, dirty boxing and devastating standup boxing that has rocked almost every one of his opponents and led the referee to step in if the fighter wasn't completely finished. In this bout he will be fighting a full 5 rounds defending his welterweight title against Wrestling Bot. Digital will have his biggest advantage in the standup where he has exceptional boxing skills. He will have to sprawl well to avoid the powerful takedowns of his opponent and if it does land on the floor this is one fight that "RZA" won't be able to win on the ground. Assuming he keeps the fight standing Digital should have an easy night but a knockout is not going to be as easy as any of his last 6 bouts with a granite chin like Bot's. Wrestling Bot showed us a very impressive knockout of Velimir Stojkovic at EMMA 23 where he was being dominated for the entire duration of the 3 round bout until he managed to pull guard and get into mount where he finished the fight with ground strikes in devastating fashion. The victory earned Bot the title shot and he will be looking to make the most of his chance come Wednesday night. As his name suggests, Bot is very well versed in the ground game. He has powerful takedowns, devastating ground striking ability and even brown belt submissions skills to go along with it which have earned him 4 of his victories by submission. Despite having a granite chin, Bot has lost 3 of his fights by (T)KO due to his weakness in standup fighting so it will be interesting to see if "RZA" will be able to get to his chin in the standup. If Bot can land his takedowns and keep the fight on the ground he may be able to pull off another victory with EMMA.

However my pick would have to be: Bobby Digital via UD

And finally the much anticipated main event of EMMA 27 is the lightweight title bout, a rematch from their 3 round affair:

Raekwon The Chef v Paul Hewson

Raekwon The Chef, was on a 6 fight undefeated win streak until he met with former welterweight contender Paul Hewson. In a unanimous decision Hewson was able to land the more accurate punches and for the first time in his career he was brought to the judges scorecards. The Chef has since been working hard on his boxing skills and is hoping that this time he will be able to defend his title against Hewson. Their skillsets are identical except for The Chef's BJJ brown belt so it will be interesting to see if the champ will be able to get the fight to the ground this time around. Paul Hewson will be looking to repeat what he's already done come Wednesday but the question is will he be able to keep his head with another title on the line? As long as he can keep this fight standing it seems inevitable but one can never know as the pressure is on come wednesday night at EMMA 27.

My pick is Raekwon via UD

So there you have it fight fans! Another Action packed night of fights with many titles up for grabs. That's it for now. until next time, I'm Shining Eagle signing off. Stay sharp MMAtycoon!
