UNDER CARD

Featherweight Fight

#20 Jose Aldo Jr (4-2, 1-1 NGF) v #3 Diego Brandao (2-1 NGF)

I was very perplexed by the fight, it was like the two of them switched bodies before the fight started.  Jose Aldo Jr. has been a stand up fighter, he throws many combinations and kicks, in this fight, he didn’t.  Diego Brandao hasn’t done much standing up, but in this one he fired off 21 punches.  Aldo Jr. game plan was very strange, he was the one looking to clinch and he was the one that took this fight to the mat, a strength area for Brandao.  Aldo Jr. showed he is not as skilled on the ground, as he left himself in a sloppy position and Brandao locked up the SOTN triangle armbar at 3:55 of the 1st round.
Lightweight Fight

#20 Ryan King (8-6, 2-5 NGF) v #17 Ryuken Yanagi (6-5, 1-0 NGF)

This was the 2nd fight in a row that just didn’t offer much in way of excitement.  Ryan King opened up Ryuken Yanagi with a hard shot just moments into the fight, but then Yanagi was able to get back to his game plan, shot in for take down after take down until he locked one up.  Once on the mat, Yanagi showed his monster ground and pound attack, he was able to land 12 of 14 ground strikes and totally control King on the mat.  He landed a massive forearm then a brilliant elbow and this fight was over 4:21 of the 1st round.  One thing to learn about Yanagi, you do not want to get to the mat with this guy.

Bantamweight Fight

#14 Augusto Cruz (5-6, 4-6 NGF) v #3 Boris Yurinov (7-3, 5-3 NGF)

After two so so fights, we got into a real battle.  I thought Augusto Cruz would be able to use his power and be able to win this fight with some sort of finish, instead we saw a lighting quick Boris Yurinov pitter patter his way to another decision win.  Curz was never in this fight.  He couldn’t catch Yurinov who was in constant motion, darting in and out, bobbing, weaving and firing off shot after shot, many of them landing, but none doing any major damage.  In fact after the fight, Cruz was slightly swollen, but it didn’t look like he allowed 45 of 50 head punches to land and 26 of 28 body punches.  His legs were red after Yurinov was able to land 38 of 48 leg kicks.  A major disappointment for Cruz after Boris Yurinov thoroughly dominated this fight.

Lightweight Fight

#12 Kyun-Chul Kim (2-1 NGF) v #3 Makoto Shibasaki (9-4, 7-3 NGF)

This one was a very entertaining fight, it had some of everything and it showed that these two guys are two of the best inside the lightweight division.  Kyun-Chul Kim was very active, he looked very good standing up and his take down defense was very solid.  He fought off 8 of 10 take down attempts from Makoto Shibasaki.  Also, when he did go down, he showed very good grappling skills as he avoided much damage on the mat.  Kim managed to land 17 of 39 head punches, but he was beaten up a bit in the clinch, even though he was the one taking the fight to the clinch.  Shibasaki used a good kicking game to set up his take down attempts.  He landed 16 of 25 leg kicks, many of them very on the outside of the lead leg of Kim.  These two fought very hard, not a lot of damaging strikes, but these two well deserved the FOTN in this one as Makoto Shibasaki won this one by split decision, 30-27, 28-29, 30-27

Super Heavyweight Fight

#16 Frank Greenleaf (9-3, 0-1 NGF) v #6 Vladan Perunovic (8-1, 5-1 NGF)

Well sometimes you write a preview and it comes out almost perfect, this is one of those cases.  Frank Greenleaf entered the NGF and he instantly was matched up against a REAL fighter.  Frank has earned a record of 9-2 coming in, fighting mostly cans from low level orgs or pick up fights, he was cocky and thought he could beat anyone that was placed in front of him.  Vladan Perunovic is a real fighter, a man who can knock a head off a body; he just about did that in this one.  It was the first right hand Perunovic landed, bam, Greenleaf was cut and wobbly.  Later, an uppercut landed, boom, another cut, Greenleaf was clearly seeing stars.  Then just for fun, Perunovic fired off a head kick, good night Mr. Greenleaf.  This was over at 1:57 of the 1st, which is actually longer than I thought it would go.

MAIN CARD

Bantamweight Fight

#17 Ron Sieler (6-7 NGF) v #8 Lutz Knitter (13-5, 4-3 NGF)

Maybe Ron Sielers career is going to end up being a .500 record?  I don’t know, he works hard, but he can come out and look like he did in this one too.  Lutz Knitter showed his class and he dominated Ron Sieler from the start, even winning in areas where Sieler was thought to have the advantage.  Sieler moved well, he did land some heavy shots, but Knitter was active, he kept coming and controlled the center of the octagon.  Knitter landed 34 of 41 punches in the fight and he also controlled the clinch game, he also showed very good defensive skills and just never allowed Sieler to get a rhythm in this fight.  I don’t know what Sielers game plan might have been, but maybe it was to take down Knitter, but when he did he just did nothing.   Sieler made the mistake in this fight, as he looked at the clock, why?  Don’t know, but he did, and when he did, Knitter dropped him and ended this fight with a monster right hand at 1:59 of the 2nd round.  Knitter has to be considered for a title fight very soon and it’s back to the drawing board for Sieler, I think this will have to be the end of the top fighter matchup for him for a while.

Middleweight Fight

#11 Heath Marcum (7-1, 4-0 NGF) v #5 Facaloto Gals (12-5, 4-2 NGF)

Well, I thought Heath Marcum would win this fight with a 2nd round TKO, he did, but I didn’t know or realize just how awesome this guy is on the ground.  Marcum got a very early take down, and then proceeded to just pound on Facaloto Gals.  He was able to land a knee to the ribs of Gals, and then landed a perfect elbow that had Gals go limp for a second.  Gals only defense was to try and lock up arms looking for submissions.  Just after the 2 minute mark of the 1st, Gals performed a beautiful sweep and switched to the mount, and he did start to work over Marcum at that point.  In the 2nd, Marcum was able to land the early take down again, he was able to really unload on Gals, who once again, managed to improve and also work his ground attack.  At the 4 minute mark, after fighting off a submission, Marcum was able to posture up and dropped elbows from hell that had the ref ending this at 4:33 of the 2nd.  A fantastic ground fight between these two, and proves these two are two of the top grapplers in the division.

Middleweight Fight

#4 Mikhail Rakhmanov (6-2, 3-2 NGF) v #3 Jima Jamm (12-3-1, 3-0 NGF)

A fight that would determine the #1 contender, both guys looked good, both guys were fired up and there was a tension in the air you could cut with a knife.  Mikhail Rakhmanov pushed the pace, but Jima Jamm was able to counter very well in the first.  Rakhmanov was able to also get a very late take down in the round which probably helped him win the 1st round.  In the 2nd, Jamm continued his kicking attack with leg kicks and a mix of a head kick, while Rakhmanov stayed on his attack also, landing heavy overhand punches.  Early in the 2nd, Jamm took the fight to the clinch, he was able to really land some shots that hurt Mikhail.  After the break, you could tell some sort of strike hurt Rakhmanov in the clinch, he was more slouched, his body language looked like he was protecting some sort of body injury.  Jamm went back to working leg kicks, and then he switched to a head kick, that landed right on the side of Rakhmanovs head and rocked him, he staggered and then fell to the canvas.  Rakhmanov got back to his feet, but he was bleeding badly from his head and still looked out of it.  Jamm didn’t waste time, he moved in, stopped and landed a monster right head kick that landed under Rakhmanovs jaw and sent him off his feet and down, as Jamm rushed in, the ref threw a body block and stopped the fight at 1:56 of the 2nd.  A highlight reel KO and it earned the KOTN as well.  Very good fight and Jamm will now get the title fight, I can’t wait for that!

Middleweight Title Fight

#2 Milan Savic (7-2 NGF) v #1 Artur Ross (9-2, 8-2 NGF)

Nobody gave Milan Savic much of a chance, nobody thought he would win, nobody thought Artur Ross would have much trouble…nobody told Savic this.  Let’s make no mistake about this, this may have been the single worst title fight I can remember.  Milan Savic was a take down and then sub machine, Artur Ross is a very exciting stand up fighter, but he was reduced to a very frustrated fighter trying to get off his back the entire fight.  Ross tried, he attempted 22 leg kicks in an effort to slow down Savics wrestling game, he tried to take the fight to the clinch to wear out Savic, but Milan was relentless.  Savic did throw 48 punches, but most of them were just little faints that were meant to set up his 20 take down attempts.  The first Savic got the take down then attempted 9 submissions.  Ross, who was landing the more powerful strikes, was clearly frustrated at the end of the 1st round.  Ross, who doesn’t talk much, he is very quiet, was upset, but he still didn’t have much to say.  In the 2nd, Ross missed his head kick and that allowed Savic to take him down again, then once again it was all controlling and submission attempts from Savic.  The 3rd, finally Ross was able to defend some take downs and he was able to win the round.  He was able to counter and land some heavy punches and kicks that had Savic finally looking a little worn out.  In the 4th, Savic was able to get Ross down again, and it was back to looking for submissions.  In the entire fight, Savic only attempted 7 ground strikes, most of the time he was just controlling Ross, and looking for a submission.  Before round 5 started, Ross looked like a defeated fighter, he was breathing very heavy, he was clearly frustrated and his head was hung low.  Ross did show a heart of a champion though, he came out, was fighting upset and he landed a huge head kick that bloodied up Savic.  However, moment later, Milan was able to get this fight back to the mat and he finished the fight on top.  As the bell rang, Savic held out his hand to help Ross up, who swatted the hand away, I’d say Ross was slightly upset.  And as the judge’s decision was made, we had OUR NEW MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION, MILAN SAVIC!

Welterweight Fight

#5 Kaito Rin (11-2, 1-0 NGF) v #2 Enzo Moretti (13-7, 1-1 NGF)

A great top 5 matchup in the welterweight division between Kaito Rin and Enzo Moretti.  Kaito Rin started this fight looking to take the fight to the mat.  Both fighters started off slow, but just after the 1 minute mark, Rin was able to shot in and drag Moretti to the ground, but the ref stood them up after a minute of doing nothing.  Just after the stand up, Moretti landed a 3 punches that snapped Rins head back on each punch and split his lip open.  The round ended with some good leg kicks from Enzo and then Rin getting another take down.  The 2nd had Rin diving through and taking Moretti down, then the entire round was Rin controlling the fight on the ground and looking for submissions, total domination from Rin in the 2nd round.  The 3rd round had very little actually fighting as in punching action, the bell rang, Rin got a shoot take down, and then all ground attack, but not actual punching, just controlling and looking for submissions.  Rin ended up getting 5 of 8 take downs attempted, he attempted 8 ground strikes and only landed 1 of them and he ended up 0 for 4.  Enzo Moretti landed just 3 punches and was 7 for 11 on leg kicks, but that was it.  He was just dominated on the ground as far as being able to do anything, Rin laid on him and controlled him.  Rin ended up out wrestling Moretti and got the unanimous decision in one of the worst fights in the NGF in recent memory.  It’s too bad, I really thought this would have fireworks, but instead it was a dud.
