The MMA Today - Mauricio Calvancante

Fighter profile of Mauricio Calvancante by Jack LaBear

Welcome everyone, I'm Phil Conners and I'm here to bring you another episode of "The MMA Today Show" where we bring you some of the best fighters in Los Angeles and explore what they are all about. Today we will be visiting with Mauricio "Pitbull" Calvancante, Mauricio is one of the best fighters in the game when it comes to fighting on the ground. Ladies and Gentlemen, give it up for Mauricio...PITBULL...Calvancante.

[Mauricio enters the set wearing an Armani suit, smiling, and waves to the crowd]

Phil: Welcome to the show Mauricio.

[Mauricio ignores Phil, and continues waving and bowing to the audience]

Phil: Thanks for coming on the show today.

Mauricio: Yeah, yeah cut the crap and lets get on with the interview.

Phil: Whoa down boy, be easy on me. I guess I know why they call you "Pitbull" now [chuckles]. So...Pitbull, at least you LOOK nice today. Tell me, where does all that anger come from, and is that what helps you win fights?

Mauricio: Well, I'd say that the name nickname Pitbull describes both my fighting style and personality. I was given the name Pitbull because every fight I'm aggressive from start to finish and I may not win every fight but you can be damn sure I'm gonna give it my all and try to put a show on for the fans.

Phil: I like the name Pitbull, and after meeting you in person I think it fits [chuckles]. Is it OK if I call you Pitbull?

Mauricio: No, you can refer to me as Champ.

Phil: OK...Champ it is [chuckles]. So Pitbull, some fans really enjoy the ground game but some say it is boring. As a ground fighter yourself, what is your reaction to that?

Mauricio: The day people say they saw a boring Mauricio Pitbull Calvancante fight is the day I'll retire because I'm not here to win boring fights. I'd rather have no wins but each fight being an absolute war than have won all my fights in boring fashion by, say, laying on top of guys or pitter pattering my way to edging someone on points like some guys like to do in this sport. On the other hand, when I'm fighting, I never try to go in the cage with anger. I try to use aggression with reason, not recklessness. The one fight that I let my emotions get the best of me was the second Tony Brown fight, but thats a whole other story. Outside of the cage though I try to stay calm and collected unless someone gives me a reason not to.

Phil: It's interesting you want to be called Champ, there is word on the street that you are going to have the first shot at the new champion of the middleweight division...Can you confirm that for us here on the show?

Mauricio: Yeah man, thats true. I was offered the fight a couple weeks ago and I accepted it. So I'm gonna be sitting aside now and watching the June 1st UPF-LA title fight between Ouji Eiishi and Ricky Hed very closely. I'm gonna study the tape thoroughly with my manager and I'm telling you man, I'm taking this fight more serious than I've ever taken a fight before.

Phil: You have had a shot at a title belt in the past against Tony Brown in Hilo at UPF-H, what went wrong in that fight?

Mauricio: In the past, I've had trouble with my morale being crucially low on fight night and that was my problem in the second Tony Brown fight along with not adjusting my gameplan whatsoever which was a dumb mistake. For this next title fight, you can be assured my morale will be at its peak, which it hasn't been since my UPF Hilo debut against Fabolous Fjodor.

Phil: Well you certainly look to be in good shape Pitbull. Do you think your will be up to 100% for the upcoming title match?

Mauricio: Didn't I just tell you I'm taking this fight seriously, I'm telling you man, when I come in in shape and focused and with a prepared gameplan, I can get any fighter in the world's ass down on that mat and find a way to make them give up.

Phil: Do you have any predictions on who you will be facing?

Mauricio: In this title fight between Ouji Eiishi and Ricky Hed, I'm gonna be pullin for Ouji to win. I think hes just the better fighter and the more interesting fight for me, as well as the greater challenge. He's 5-0 and has some really nice striking and I think Ouji's gonna knock Ricky out.

Phil: Ok folks, it looks like we are just about out of time. As per custom, the last 30 seconds are all yours Pitbull. Anything you want to say to anyone out there? Anything goes.

Mauricio: Screw you, Ouji Eiishi. I'm comin for your belt muffucka! I lose, I retire. You heard it here first on whatever this damn show is called. I know Ouji will win and when we fight- I lose, and Mauricio "Pitbull" Calvancante will officially retire AND send Ouji 10000 dollars. Thanks for having me, Phil.

Phil: Alrighty, the best of luck to you Pitbull. Well folks, we have come to the end of our show, don't forget to join us here next week, same time, same place, where we will have Kari Parisyen on the show. Kari is fighting for the bantamweight belt next week, and we and we are really lucky he took some time out from training to be on our show. Until next week, this is Phil Conners saying "Don't forget, Don't submit"....so long.
