ITFL Review – Week 8 Part 2

Welcome back to part 2 of our weekend, as we came to you live from the Wombley Arena in London, England. After an exciting first event Team TFP Graphics and the Team Misfits have finished all 5 of their fights and Team TFP Graphics gets a big 3-2 win this week. Also in team action on part 1 of our weekend we saw Team Reaper bring over a 2-0 lead, Team Syndicate holds a 1-0 lead over Team Kaiser and Team Hells Balls Nutrition and the Replacements Team are tied 1-1. Let’s check out how the action went down on part 2 of our big weekend.

Greco Roman (13-12) vs. Juan Sebastian Veron (13-5)

Our 2nd event kicks off with the tie-breaker between Team HB Nutrition and the Replacement’s team as two elite caliber wrestlers square off when Greco Roman takes on the man who made a successful debut last week Juan Sebastian Veron. The first round got under-way and Roman came out the aggressor landing on a few of his striking attempts. Veron looked for an early takedown but shot from too far away and Roman countered with a takedown into guard. Greco Roman used his ground strikes to help him advance position and eventually passed to the mount position and landed some big strikes from there while holding that position for the last two minutes of the round. Veron came out and got an early takedown into side-control in round 2 but Roman managed to buck him off and sneak out to take his back. Roman tried for a rear-naked choke several times from the back but Veron eventually reversed the position and finished the round on top. Veron came out and landed another takedown early in round 3 but this time into half-guard. He eventually passed the half-guard into the full-mount and started to land some big strikes from the position. At around the 3:30 mark in the round Veron landed some big strikes that really but Roman in trouble and followed it up with more strikes that forced the referee to step in and stop the fight. What a come from behind victory!

Veron def. Roman by 3rd round TKO

Sir Jecht (13-8) vs. Viktor Kafka (22-11-1)

Next on the card former Olympic wrestler Sir Jecht represents Team Syndicate when he takes on the well-rounded Viktor Kafka of Team Kaiser. Viktor Kafka came out aggressive with strikes to start round 1 and he was finding a lot of success with his punches and kicks. Sir Jecht was desperately trying to get this fight to the ground and after a missed right hand by Kafka he was able to counter with a nice takedown. Kafka was eventually able to reverse the position and get on top after a scramble but just looked to control his opponent and the referee was forced to stand the two fighters back up. Sir Jecht started to find his range a little bit better with his punches but Kafka was landing devastating kicks until the end of the round. Viktor Kafka came out early in round 2 landing a lot leg kicks as it appeared like Jecht wasn’t very skilled at checking them. Viktor Kafka did a really nice job keeping the fight on the feet in the 2nd round and landing a lot of strikes and when a hook snuck around his opponent’s defenses he really hurt him. Kafka showed good killer instinct by quickly following up with a jab, straight right hand combination that knocked Jecht out-cold.

Kafka def. Jecht by 2nd round KO

Pete Damato (22-18) vs. Colin Hendry (25-10-1)

Our next fight is our 4th fight between Team H.B. Nutrition and the Replacements team as heavy handed strikers squared off when Pete Damato took on Colin Hendry. The first round got under-way and both fighters came out swinging but a nice jab by Damato opened up a cut on his opponent in the first minute of the round. The two fighters traded strikes back and forth for the first half of the round before Hendry closed the distance and engaged Damato in the clinch position where they spent the last half of the round trading strikes. Pete Damato landed a big head kick in the opening moments of round 2 so Hendry again pushed him back against the cage for a few moments before separating back to a distance. Colin landed a beauty of a right hand that rocked Damato and then followed it up with a straight right-hand that dropped him to the canvas. After a few follow-up hammer-fists by Hendry the referee had to jump in and save “Hands of Stone.”

Hendry def. Damato by 2nd round TKO

Helio James (26-13) vs. Jarrod Batchelor (12-5-1)

The team match-up has already been decided between Hells Balls Nutrition and the Replacements team but with just 2 fights left in the regular season after this week, every point counts towards seeding so this was still a big fight for both guys as Helio James took on Jarrod Batchelor. Helio James came out the aggressor in round 1 landing a few strikes before ducking down and landing a takedown into full-guard. James used a couple nice elbows to set up his transition to half-guard and from there he started to open up with submission attempts. After a failed arm-triangle attempt, James locked up the kimura and it looked tight. Moments later Batchelor was screaming in pain as James cracked it and got the nice submission victory. Hopefully Batchelor will be ok by the next fight!

James def. Batchelor by 1st round Submission (kimura)

I.P. Daily (9-11) vs. Frank Esposito (36-13)

The under-card rounds out when I.P. Daily and the Aces of Spades look to avoid a 3-0 deficit when they face the elite level kick-boxer representing Team Reaper in Frank Esposito. The bell rung for round 1 and we were under-way and it was Esposito who came out the aggressor and was finding a lot of success with his strikes, specifically his leg kicks. Daily was having a hard time finding his range through the first few minutes and Esposito eventually pushed him against the cage into the clinch position. Daily didn’t want his back against the cage and fought hard to get out of the position a couple of times during the round. With less than a minute to go in the round, Esposito really started to look for a finish and when he landed a big head kick that rocked Daily he knew he was close. Esposito then threw a nasty head-kick that just missed and then followed up with another head-kick that almost took Daily’s head off but knocked him out cold.

Esposito def. Daily by 1st round KO

Latka Gravas (24-15-1) vs. Geralt of Ravia (15-5)

Our main card gets under-way with a week 1 rematch between Latka Gravas and Geralt of Ravia with the Group B lead at stake this week. Both teams came into this contest tied 1-1 after the fights contested to this point in the night. Both fighters came out really aggressive in round 1 and were in a great back and forth battle on the feet until Geralt clinched up 2 minutes into the round. The two muay-thai specialists spent the rest of the round battling for position against the cage. The second round was contested strictly on the feet and striking at range and again both fighters were really pushing a tough pace. Latka Gravas got the better of the striking in the 2nd round and we headed into the 3rd with an even fight. It appeared like the early work to the legs by Geralt really hindered his opponent’s movements in the 3rd round and allowed him to get in and out and scores shots without taking a ton of damage in return on his way to out-striking Gravas over the last 5 minutes of the fight.

Geralt def. Gravas by 29-28 Unanimous Decision

Dan Smith (19-9) vs. Boy Bubby (15-5-1)

Next on the card Dan Smith tries to turnaround a 3 fight losing streak in the tournament as he took on the cocky and often controversial Boy Bubby. The fight got under-way and Smith came out landing a few strikes in the early moments, but then Bubby landed a nice combination and looked for a takedown. Dan Smith moved the fight into the clinch position just before the minute mark and the two fighters spent over two and a half minutes battling it out against the cage. Bubby drove through with a takedown with a minute left in the round and managed to finish the round on top of his opponent. Boy Bubby landed a nice jab early in round 2 that opened up a cut on his opponent and then after an off balance right hand by Smith he countered with a nice takedown into guard. Smith did a nice job controlling the action on the ground and forced the ref to step in and stand the fight up and the two fighters went back and forth at a distance until Dan Smith pushed Bubby against the cage in the clinch position. He didn’t stay in that position long but did land some nice shots that got Boy Bubby breathing heavily. Both fighters came out looking to score in round 3 as Bubby was finding a lot of success with his kicks where Smith was throwing strictly punches. Smith did manage to clinch his opponent but then quickly separated back to striking range. Smith landed an overhand left right at the 3 minute mark of the round that rocked Bubby and then stalked after him looking for a finish. He pushed Bubby against the cage but then again separated back to striking range. Smith then landed a big overhand right that dropped Bubby like a sack of potatoes and this fight was over!

Smith def. Bubby by 3rd round TKO

Katsuro Sato (21-11) vs. Dan Leighty (18-7-1)

Up next is our 4th match-up between Team Syndicate Nutrition and Team Kaiser as world-class striker Dan Leighty takes on the BJJ black-belt Katsuro Sato. The first round got under-way and Leighty showed good takedown defense early in the fight as he out-struck his opponent in a really close first round, while not seeing his back hit the mat one time. Katsuro Sato came out looking to throw a lot of leg kicks in the 2nd round and was faring better in this round but a left hook, right uppercut from Leighty opened up a cut on him. Sato showed great athleticism by shooting in on a takedown into half-guard and managed to finish the round on top of his opponent. We headed into the 3rd and final round with an even fight and we’d find out which fighter wanted it more. Sato came out and landed an accidental low-kick on Leighty but after a few brief minutes to recover we were back to the fight. Leighty again showed great takedown defense in the 3rd round and managed to really open up with his striking game as it looks like he pulled this fight out when they went to the judge’s scorecards.

Leighty def. Sato by 29-28 Unanimous Decision

Luka Beck (20-5-1) vs. Sergiy Sklyar (21-5-1)

In our co-main event of the evening we see the 5th and deciding match-up between Team Kaiser and Team Syndicate Nutrition as Luka Beck takes on Sergiy Sklyar in another rematch from the week 1 match between these two teams. Both fighters came out aggressive in round 1 and were trading strikes back and forth for the better part of 2 minutes before Sklyar drove through with a takedown into guard. Beck did a nice job controlling from the bottom and forced the ref to step in and stand the fighters back up. Luka then closed the distance and clinched and managed to land a nice trip takedown into half-guard and stayed on top for almost the rest of the round until Sklyar bucked up and reversed the position right before the end of the round. Sergiy Sklyar came out with a nice takedown early in the 2nd round but Beck again controlled the position until the ref stood the fighters up. After a missed leg kick by Beck, Sklyar countered with his 2nd takedown inside the first minute of round 2. Beck landed a nice scissor sweep from bottom though and managed to land in half-guard on top. Sergiy did a nice job getting back to guard and controlling the position until a ref stand-up. The two traded on the feet for over a minute before an off-balance right hand by Beck left him open to the counter takedown to side-control and Sklyar finished the round on top. We entered the 3rd and final round with another even fight and both fighters came out trying to land leg kicks early in the 3rd round. Beck managed to catch Sklyar on his heels and get an easy takedown in the early part of the round but Sklyar did a nice job controlling and forced another ref stand-up. Sergiy immediately pushed forward with a right hand that missed and his opponent countered with another takedown. Sklyar managed to reverse the position and was on top for a little while until the ref once again forced the two fighters to stand. Beck landed a couple strikes and stuffed a few takedown attempts to finish the round and we headed to the judge’s scorecards after a closely contested fight.

Beck def. Sklyar by 29-28, 28-30, 29-28 Split Decision

Jeremy Voda (14-8) vs. Dennis Wise (28-9)

Our main event sees two of our individual points leaders face-off in a fight that was requested by Dennis Wise when he told Jeremy Voda to prove he was for real. The fight got under-way and Voda came out and got a nice trip takedown into side-control but Wise quickly scrambled back to half-guard and then managed to get Voda in his guard. Voda thought about going for a leg but decided against it and Wise did a nice job controlling his opponent from his guard until the referee stepped in and stood the fighters back up. Jeremy Voda again shot in and landed a takedown into full guard but once again Wise did a nice job controlling the position until the fight was stood back up. Voda was desperately trying to get the fight to the ground as Dennis Wise really started to open up with his strikes on the feet. After a right hand by Voda missed he was hit with a crisp counter right hand by Wise that dropped him to the floor and had him really hurt. Wise didn’t follow him to the ground though and instead waved Voda back to his feet. Then Wise faked a right and followed up with a big left that dropped Voda to one knee - oooooh, he looked wobbly! Voda then looked to clinch but Wise threw him off and pummeled him into the canvas! Voda tapped out under the strikes! This fight was over!

Wise def. Voda by 1st round Submission (strikes)
