Insanity 1: The Madness Begins

Event Review: Insanity 1: The Madness Begins
Insanity (220K+)
2013-12-07, Los Angeles, Wild Bob's Bar - Los Angeles
Attendance:587, Event Rating:64
Author:John Hetfield

The event was opened with a middleweight bout between Martin Korten and  Miroslav Milosavljevic.

There is not much that can be said about this fight besides the fact both men seemed to be eager to throw elbows. A total of 109 were thrown and only 14 landed. After 3 rounds of that,  Martin Korten took the fight by split decision. The second fight of the evening was a lightweight bout between Jacob Laws and Julian James,  there was some striking on the feet, but the goal for both men seemed to be to get the fight on the ground and find out who had the better grappling. Turns out it was Jacob Laws as he took the win via Kimura submission halfway the 2nd round.  The third fight was a heavyweight match up between Tomasz Spreniak and Bobby Hodge, in another fight that seemed to be about finding out who had the better grappling. Neither of the men could do much on the ground or standing up as they seemed pretty equal to each other in the skills. Winner was Tomsz Spreniak by Unanimous Decision. The fourth fight we go to the welterweight division for a fight between Tony Le Sopra and Fredick Koch. Koch was the more aggressive stand up fighter and showed great takedown defense. Le Sopra seemed to control the fight more in the clinch and on the ground, leading to him winning by Unanimous Decision.  For the fifth fight we go to Jeremy Perosh and Tom Maverick in the heavyweight division.  A short fight for these heavyweights, with Perosh pushing the pace and overwhelming Maverick early on, leading to a nasty KO via Spinning Backfist for Perosh to get the win.

For the sixth fight we back to the lightweight division, to see Rich Van Winkle take on Nagib Holgersen.  Classic Striker vs Grappler match, with the striking off Van Winkle not doing much damage to Holgersen, who was bravely going for takedowns over and over. Van Winkle got the win via Unanimous Decision in the end.  The seventh fight takes place in the Middleweight Division, where Devin Myers took on Frankie Rock. Rock landed an early takedown on Myers and patiently worked the grappling game with Myers, eventually getting the submission with just 4 seconds to spare in the 1st round, with a very nicely done arm triangle.

We move on to the co-Main Event, which is a fight that takes place in the welterweight division between Paul McKilly and Johnny Pain.  Both men seem to share the same amount of experience and will provide for an interesting fight giving their styles. Paul McKilly gets cut early on by a nice hook of Johnny Pain. The cut seemed to effect McKilly and allowed Johnny to keep working his striking game very effectively. McKilly gets rocked at some point and as he is trying to recover on his feet, Johnny lands one hell of a uppercut that just knocks him out badly. Johnny Pain takes the win at 1:17 of the 1st round via KO by the uppercut from hell.  On to the main event next, which is a heavyweight bout between Turk Assambad and Kevin MacOwan. Both men are known for their boxing, so this should provide for an explosive fight.  MacOwen early on seems a bit more aggressive, throwing mostly single shots while Assambad is focusing on putting together combinations. Assambad also wants to try out the clinch at times, but his corner doesn’t seem happy with it. Shortly into the 2nd round of the fight, MacOwan  counters a combo thrown by Assambad, knocking him down to the floor.  Assambad is rocked and MacOwen is in his guard, but decides to get up, leading to yet another knockdown seconds later, with once again MacOwan following on the ground, however MacOwen gets up yet again. This time MacOwen seemed to have had enough, and one of the next strikes landed ends the fight via KO in his favour.
