CFC 232 brought to you by the Canadian Fighting Championship and Popeye’s Spinach Supplements is this weekend live from Montreal and features a welterweight title match and light heavyweight title eliminator.

As always, CFC fight fans can get their gambling fix at the CFC Casino found at: http://mmatycoon.com/bookmakerpublic.php?bid=7045. Odds have been posted not only for CFC 232: Mayhem vs Montana, but upcoming events as well.

Antonio Montana vs Justin Mayhem (Welterweight Title Fight)

The main event of the evening sees rising mega-star Antonio Montana attempting to defend his belt for the third time. Montana is a veteran CFC fighter with all but two of his 21 career fights coming in the CFC cage. He’s also a rare example of a fighter who has had more successful after he moved up in weight class.  Since becoming a welterweight, he has an impressed 8-1 record. Montana is primarily a boxer, but has worked to round out his game recently, improving his muay thai and jiu jitsu – recently securing his only career sub win.  Justin Mayhem has been on an incredible roll since leaving Synchonicity for the CFC, rattling off four consecutive wins. He also is a traditional boxer with good defensive grappling and may in fact have an advantage with his hands.  To date the champ has never been stopped while Mayhem has lost five times via stoppage.  The fight promising to be a real barn burner between guys with great boxing skills. The champ is the slight betting favourite on the evening, but it’s expected to be a very competitive bout.

Manu Okoro vs Drederick Tatum (Light Heavyweight Trilogy Fight)

It’s been a rough couple months for one time #2 p4p fighter in the world Manu Okoro who has dropped three of his last four fights.  He will try to right the ship, and earn a decisive victory over Tatum, on Sunday when they meet for the third time.  Okoro needs no introduction to fight fans – with his spectacular striking game he is one of the most feared 205 pounders on the planet. Tatum’s career is in some ways polar opposite of Okoro’s – it’s been filled with ups and downs but he’s currently on a great upward trajectory having won 6 of his last 7 fights. His career is marred by two three-fight losing streaks in the CFC but he’s now poised to earn a chance to reclaim the CFC Light Heavyweight title he briefly held earlier this year.  This is the third time since February 27, 2011 the two have met. The first fight ended with a devastating head kick by Okoro and their second bout saw Tatum get his revenge by stopping Okoro in the second round with strikes.  There are whispers in the locker room that perhaps Okoro’s chin is shot – but it would be foolish to discount such a legend in any fight.

Kearney McGarrity vs Vlad Tepes (Heavyweight)

Ireland’s pride and joy Kearney McGarrity was a highly-anticipated arrival in the CFC but ran into a hot Mandla Bangizwe in his promotional debut that has temporarily derailed the hype train. McGarrity is a talented boxer with good supplemental skills.  Relatively inexperienced by CFC standards with just eight fights on his record, he is considered is potential rising star in the CFC.  Tepes in contrast came to the CFC as a relatively unheralded journeyman before a three-fight win streak lined him against mutual opponent Bangizwe. Tepes is also a talented striker but with 30 fights and a .500 record, it’s unclear if his experience will prove to be an advantage, or if the cumulative damage he’s taken will be the deciding factor in the contest.

Juan Escobar vs Jacques St Croix (Featherweight)

The former feathweight champ, Juan Escobar hasn’t won a meaningful fight since a lightweight bout in December, but that should not distract fight fans from the fact that he’s a big favourite against St Croix this weekend. Escobar will be looking to use his mix of solid striking, very good wrestling and spectacular jiu jitsu to keep St Croix guessing throughout the contest. It is a particularly challenging matchup for St Croix whose strengths are much the same as Escobars...but not as good.  It will take an error from Escobar for St Croix to be able to coax a victory out of this matchup.

Vinnie Barbarino vs Arthur Antunes Coimbra (Heavyweight)

CFC neophyte Barbarino is a celebrated veteran of some of the biggest organizations in MMA Tycoon history and is now added the oldest promotion to his achievements. He’s also a great fighter with equally good boxing, wrestling and BJJ.  He’s a finishing specialist with 13 of his 15 victories coming by stoppage.  Coimbra also has a celebrated lineage and will hope to return to his winning ways on Sunday.  Outgunned in the ground game, Coimbra’s emphasis will be on the striking game to try and earn a knockout win and hopefully one of the “Of the Night” bonuses the CFC has started handing out.

Cha Cha vs David Hollywood (Middleweight)

This is one of those fun old-school striker vs grappler matches. Although Cha Cha’s boxing has improved over time, there is no question his desire to get guys to the mat and use his exquisite BJJ skills to submit them.  This is exactly the kind of fight former CFC LHW and MW champ Hollywood does not want.  He’s a pure striker with enough wrestling acumen to stop guys from taking him down most of the time. On the mat, “Huckleberry” isn’t much to speak about. Hollywood is undeniably the fan favourite in the contest, but it will be interesting to see who emerges victorious on Sunday.

Bruce Tree vs Shawn Carter (Light Heavyweight)

Tree is one of those fighters that everyone looks at and expects to see accomplish big thigns but hasn’t quite been able to put it together yet.  With an impressive muay thai game and decent secondary skills, he’s managed a 9-5 record to date in his career. He’ll look to double his win to loss ratio Sunday against Carter. It may be a challenging task as the more experienced Carter is generally seen to have an edge in both striking disciplines. Expect to see fireworks in the fight and quite possibly see someone fall down and not be able to get back up.

Donald Dean vs Jacoby Wilcox (Light Heavyweight)

Dean has a 2-3 record in the CFC and may be battling for his promotional survival against Wilcox. With a mixed bag of skills, Dean is good in many areas but not excellent in any. Fortunately for him his opponent has a similar skill set which should create a create mixed martial arts fight.

Ivan Milat vs Ted Nugent (Lightweight)

Milat’s game plan against the undefeated prospect Nugent should be pretty straight forward – punch him in the face until he falls down. Nugent is a skilled BJJ practitioner with decent wrestling but not much to offer or threaten Milat with on the feet.  With completely contradictory skills, this fight likely won’t escape the first round and almost certainly will be decided by the success of the first takedown attempt from Nugent.  Expect to see a short, action-packed contest from these two 155 lbers.

Mauri Ruoska vs Joshua Heines (Lightweight)

The opening bout on the card pits a pair of struggling 155 lbers against one another in a fight critical to both of their futures with one of the top promotions in the world.  Heines seems to have the edge on the feet and should be the prohibitive favourite going into the contest. If Ruoska can land that one big shot though you never know what may happen!
