OverComing 13: Peacemaker vs. Poldi! REVIEW

Event Review: O13: Peacemaker vs Poldi
Overcoming (ID 155k+)
2012-04-08, Amsterdam, Hayashi's Lounge - Amsterdam
Attendance:2,000, Event Rating:116
Author:K Rad

Welcome back sugar plums, K-Rad here to look back on what was an amazing event in Amsterdam over the weekend. As per usual OverComing matched 20 of the finest up and coming fighters in Europe to sell out Hyashi's Lounge and crank out another impressive and hugely entertaining event. We saw plenty of early finishes during the night and a title fight to contest the open weight championship so let's boogie on town and have a look at who did what to who, using what, when and with how much lubricant. If you're allegric to latex then skip the following and go directly to the official OC twitter @JakubWest.

Chris McGrady vs. Jan "Hammer" Nowak
Middleweight

I told you. Didn't I? That's right, I did. Nowak's lack of self confidence was his undoing tonight as McGrady did well to avoid being taken down or clinched early on in the bout and countering with his own clinch work that allowed him to control the action well. The real damage was done at striking range however when a failed Nowak clinch attempt allowed McGrady to counter with a solid combination that left "Hammer" on his back staring up into space, blood running from his face. McGrady waited for Nowak to stand before unleashing a wicked hook that rocked his opponent and followed it up what a stonking great uppercut that turned out Nowak's lights as 4:56 of round 1.

"Slodzik" Krzysztof Slodzinski vs. Marcin "Koza" Kozajowski
Super Heavyweight

I totally called this one too. For those of you who missed the preview, I am tired of injuring myself trying to type and pronounce these Polish fighter's names so we are going with Fighter A and fighter B for the purposes of this write up. Fighter B showed a very aggressive game plan as he worked hard to avoid the takedown and put his standup strengths to work against Fighter A. Fighter B dominated the fight through excellent clinch work although it was pretty boring to watch as he just stalled, stalled, controlled and then stalled. The only real action, apart from Fighter A's failed 48 takedown attempts in under 2 rounds, came towards the end of the 2nd round when the two men were at range and Fighter B tagged Fighter A with a right that put the latter on the floor, to be leapt upon by the former until the referee intervened at 4:41 of round 2 and awarded the win to Fighter B, "Koza" Kozajowski, via punching TKO.

Ingmir "Icke" Fischson vs. Dariusz "Inżynier" Kwiatkowski
Super Heavyweight

Ah, here we have the openweight battle between "Icke" Fischon and Fighter C. This was another fight determined mostly by poor morale on behalf of "Icke". Despite Fighter C clinching early he must have been regretting the decision as he wore an elbow from Fischson almost immediately which left him cut. The rest of the round didn't have a great deal of action as a few counter punches from Fighter C were the reply to "Icke's" attempts to further his clinch success before the last part of the round took place on the mat, albeit it with little happening. The 2nd round picked up the pace as Fighter C returned the favour to Fischson with a solid right hand which left him bleeding and not long later some more good footwork allowed Fighter C, "Inzynier" Kwiatkowski (C'mon...) to put in some unanswered punches, ending with a huge leaping lead hook which sent Fischson off to meet Mr Sandman at 1:24 of round 2. In celebrating his win, Kwiatkowski had this to say, "Greetings to organisations writer. I have hope that, he never called me "Fighter C"! Remember my name, because i'm the future champion!", well Mr Future Champion, I spelled your name out twice and the physiotherapy fees for my repetitive strain injury will be taken out of your win bonus!

Ricardo "Agil" Lombard vs. Sknerus "Centus" McKwacz
Middleweight. Co-Main Event!

An unfortunately underwhelming fight in the co-main event between "Agil" Lombard and "Centus" McKwacz. Neither man was prepared to go all out in a fight which was highly anticipated but failed to live up to the hype. A total of 2 strikes where thrown standing during the entire 3 rounds with most of the 'action' taking place on the ground where 9 strikes and 7 submissions were attempted. In fact, we could sum this fight up as '3 hits landed all fight' because that's about it. In terms of ground work, Lombard was the more aggressive fighter and his 7 successful takedowns ensured that he did enough to gain the unanimous decision win as McKwacz was caught flat footed and luck lustre all fight.

Colt Peacemaker vs. Jack "Shark" Poldi
Super Heavyweight. Main Event TITLE FIGHT!

To make up for the less than awesome co-main event, the two big openweight heavy guns, Peacemaker and "Shark" Poldi threw down in style to fight for the super heavyweight championship. This fight was an absolute slugfest as Poldi went all out trying to work over the champ's head but Peacemaker's jaw was up to the task as he threw back blow for blow and then some more as his slightly more aggressive fighting style held him in good stead, mixing up punches with the occasion kick to keep Poldi guessing. It was only a matter of time before one man's jaw gave way and in the end it was Poldi who wore a few good blows before succumbing to Peacemaker's only successful combination of the night and was knocked out cold at 2:05 of round 3. The champion Peacemaker retains his title in a fight well deserving of FIGHT OF THE NIGHT honours.

WRAPUP:

The only thing left for me to discuss are the remaining OTN awards and I'd like to get started with the KO of the night, coming to you in a super heavyweight bout between Artur Obrzut and Muhammad Ali. Ali landed early with the 1-2 which cut Obrzut but the latter did well to keep his composure and work his kickboxing to put in some tiring body blows. These hits really took their toll on Ali's cardio and speed as he was unable to successfully avoid an Obrzut combination which dropped him to the floor or the follow up combination which send him straight back down, thanks to an impressive spinning backfist, and once Obrzut jumped on him with arms flailing it was all over as far as the referee was concerned. The win coming at 1:17 of round 1 thanks to Obrzut's striking TKO.

The submission of the night took place in record time in a middleweight bout between Laph Roaig and Mac Intosh. Two good Scotsmen, one possibly drunken than the other which added to the ease of which Roaig was taken down by Intosh who went straight through him like a hot knife through butter to free a foot, rotate and then apply the pressure which saw him take the submission victory via arm triangle at 0:27 of round 1.

There you have it boys and girls! All of the latest OC action straight from me to you. I am K-Rad and it's been a blast so make sure you join me again next weekend when the boys do it all again in the name of science. Or blood lust, whatever.
