 TROID 24: Slider Kings

DATE:                            28th June 2014

ARENA:                         Camden Conference Centre (7,000 seater)

MERCH PARTNER:       Bad Man Clothing (Nothing over $40) , Rio

Good evening everyone and welcome to our preview of Troid’s event, Slider Kings. This is a highly anticipated event, with every division title on the line, so the future of each division will be decided. Unfortunately, there will only be 9 fights taking place instead of the usual 10 due to delays in managers accepting fights, but we are optimistic about the potential of this event. Let’s get right down to the fights taking place, along with our own analysis and prediction of each one.

FIGHT #1 – Lightweight Division

Kasper Koltun 1-2-0 (1-1-0) vs Lane Brooks 6-5-0 (3-1-0)

A good solid fight here, as the talented, but inexperienced, Kasper Koltun takes on the more experienced Lane Brooks. Koltun has not enjoyed the best start to his career in MMA, losing his first fight before signing with Troid, and then going 1-1 in his first two fights. He will be looking to make a statement when he takes on Lane Brooks, who was just one fight away from a title shot. Brooks has shown variety in his finishing, something Koltun will have to be wary of, as Brooks can finish the fight anywhere. This will be a tough one to call, with Koltun having the edge in skill, but Brooks has proved himself in the cage already.

PREDICTION: Brooks to win via Sub in Round 2

FIGHT #2 – Featherweight Division – TITLE FIGHT

Jack Olin 5-0-0 (5-0-0) vs Junior Borg 4-3-1 (3-2-1)

Our first title fight of the night takes place in the Featherweight Division, with reigning champ Jack Olin taking on dangerous striking Junior Borg. The key to winning for each fighter is simple. Olin is a sensational wrestler, and he uses that to good effect in order to work his opponents to the ground. We have yet to see him win via Sub, which makes it interesting to see if this will be the fight we see one. Borg is renowned for his striking, and unless Olin can take him to the mat, I don’t expect to see him standing off his opponent. Expect strikes to fly from Borg as he looks to capture the Featherweight title from Olin. An interesting point is that these two have already fought, with Olin picking up his only unanimous decision win to date.

PREDICTION: Olin to win via TKO in Round 2

FIGHT #3 – Heavyweight Division

Roger Munro 6-2-1 (3-1-0) vs Jack Bronson 5-1-0 (0-0-0)

Here we have two standup fighters with different approaches colliding. Munro has been in good form with Troid, winning his first 3 fights before suffering loss in his last bout. He will be looking to strike at range against dangerous clinch specialist Jack Bronson. Bronson has run through his opponents, forcing two to tap out to strikes and another two to be ended by viciously cutting them with his clinch striking. If Munro can keep this at range, he should be able to win this one.

PREDICTION: Munro to win via KO in Round 1

FIGHT #4 – Light-Heavyweight Division

Thors Hammer 7-2-0 (3-1-0) vs Magnus Svensson 3-1-0 (2-1-0)

It looks to be battle of the hammers here as “Mjölnir” takes on “The Hammer”. Hammer had a rough outing in his last fight, losing to the reigning 205lbs champion via Cut. He will be looking to reverse his fortunes and get back into the title hunt with a win here. His opponent, Svensson, fared better last time out, picking up a win and a KO of the Night bonus. He will be looking to keep it standing against the superior wrestler and aim to earn another OTN bonus.

PREDICTION: Svensson to win via TKO in Round 1

FIGHT #5 – Middleweight Division – TITLE FIGHT

Henry Hiena 4-0-0 (4-0-0) vs Lugh Blackburn 5-1-0 (5-1-0)

Here we have Hiena defending his Middleweight title for the first time since he won it. He is skilled in all areas but seems to prefer taking the fight into the clinch where he lets his striking do the talking for him. He may be thinking about taking the fight to the ground however, where he holds a significant advantage. His opponent, Lugh Blackburn, has been in vigorous form since he lost in his first fight, winning his last 5 fights, with all of them via TKO or KO. He will be looking to use his boxing to earn him another win, and place him on top of the mountain.

PREDICTION: Hiena to win via TKO in Round 1 and remain the Middleweight Champion!

FIGHT #6 – Lightweight Division – TITLE FIGHT

Matt Green 5-0-0 (5-0-0) vs Wheesy Whee 6-4-0 (4-2-0)

We will crown a new Lightweight champion here, as two of the best in the division collide. Matt Green will be putting his undefeated streak on the line in order to win the title. He seems to have discovered a winning formula, facing a variety of opponents and none of them have been able to stop him. We have yet to see his devastating Camel Clutch, but I won’t be surprised if he springs it out here. He will have to beware of Wheesy Whee’s ground game however, with Whee showing his ability to strike and submit in equal measure from this position. Both fighters will be looking to gain a dominant ground position, so don’t be surprised by a lack of standup strikes thrown.

PREDICTION: Green to win via Submission and become the LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION

FIGHT #7 – Welterweight Division – TITLE FIGHT

Carlo Froch 7-0-0 (6-0-0) vs Roberto Blanco 7-4-0 (7-4-0)

Despite Carlo Froch defeating Roberto Blanco twice before, he has never finished him, Blanco being the only man to go the distance with Froch. This makes for an interesting fight, with the main question being how much has Blanco improved since last time? Froch will be looking to keep his undefeated streak alive, and looking to break his KO problem against Blanco. If Blanco can defeat Froch, we will be looking at potential shock of the night, with Froch looking almost undefeatable in his previous fights. I can see this fight potentially going the distance again, but really, anything can happen in this fight.

PREDICTION: Froch to win via KO in Round 3 and remain the Welterweight Champion!

FIGHT #8 – Light-Heavyweight Division – TITLE FIGHT

Jackṏb Jṏhanssṏn 7-1-0 (3-0-0) vs Jim Cain 3-0-0 (2-0-0)

The one problem for anybody looking to beat the reigning champ, is how do you deal with his versatility? We have seen him display his skill in the stand up and the clinch, and with him seeming to be solid on the ground as well, he doesn’t seem to have a weakness. Jim Cain will be looking to use his fists to earn him another win. He hasn’t had a fight leave the first round, but from what we know, he has a good gas tank that could help him in the later rounds. With a variety of factors, this fight could finish in a lot of different ways.

PREDICTION: Jṏhanssṏn to win via TKO in Round 2 and remain the Light-Heavyweight Champion!

FIGHT #9 – Heavyweight Division – TITLE FIGHT

Charles Blackburn 10-2-0 (5-0-0) vs Lexington Snape 12-5-0 (5-1-0)

A highly anticipated rematch here, with Blackburn handing Snape his only loss while in Troid. Blackburn will be looking to keep his winning streak alive, and his title at his home, by submitting Snape once again. He can damage his opponents with his Ground and Pound as well, so Snape will have to be wary of any offense while on the ground. Snape’s wrestling has improved his wrestling since then, giving him a good chance to keep the fight where he has the advantage. He has finished his last 3 opponents since the first fight with Blackburn, and will look to keep that going. This is the most anticipated fight of the night, which says something considering the amount of title fights on the line.

PREDICTION: Snape to win via TKO and to become the NEW HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION!
