 Hello, fight fans! There's still a buzz from an incredible night of fights as Dos Santos and Miocic put an exclamation on an action packed weekend that held four championship bouts! Carla Esparza won UFC's first strawweight belt, Rousimar Palhares retained his WSOF title, and Jules Winnfield & Fred Frederiksen made history as they captured the United States Fighting Championship's first titles at USFC 3! Let's get right to it and cover all the highlights of last night's action:
Jules Winnfield (5-1) def. Iron Igor (4-2) TKO (Strikes) Rnd 3* - 170 lbs Title
Iron Igor comes out aggressively, shooting for takedowns and throwing strikes. Igor manages a takedown, but it results in a referee stand up. Round 1 goes to Igor as he keeps Winnfield in defensive mode. Winnfield clinches up to start round 2, but Igor manages to break the clinch and score another takedown. Winnfield controls and gets the referee stand up. Igor is looking tired as Winnfield clinches up again. Igor staying active, but missing with his shots. Winnfield controls the pace and gets the second round. Winnfield clinches to begin round three, picking up his pace as he begins to throw short shots. Igor looking for answers in the clinch, attempting to pull guard. A short shoulder strike rocks Igor! Winnfield remains calm as Igor is trying to land shots, with no success. Winnfield connects with a good hook. Igor is exerting a lot of energy to no avail as Winnfield creates enough space to launch a massive uppercut from the inside. Igor is hurt! Winnfield unloads a barrage of punches as Igor lays dazed against the cage, forcing the ref to intervene. Jules Winnfield wins the welterweight title via TKO! In a post fight interview, when asked what he has planned next, Winnfiled replied, "Say 'what' again. Say 'what' again, I dare you, I double dare you motherf%$#er, say what one more God%#mn time!" That's sure to bring a fine, but with the Fight of the Night bonus and the belt around his waist, I don't think Winnfield cares much.
Fred Frederiksen (5-6) def. Greg Gsp (5-6) Decision (Unanimous) Rnd 5 - 265 lbs Title
Gsp comes out looking for takedowns. Frederiksen avoids them easily, clinches up, and lands a beautiful takedown into side control. Gsp staying active, but Frederiksen remaining calm while controlling the action. Gsp comes out aggressively for round 2, but Frederiksen remains calm and scores a takedown, working for submissions. The pace slows and we get a stand up. Both men fail to land anything significant, but Frederiksen looks to be in charge as he slows the pace. Gsp gets the clinch to start the third and manages a takedown. Frederiksen reverses him and slows the pace until the ref stands them up. Frederiksen scores the takedown and the two scramble while Fredriksen works in a submission attempt with the ground and pound. A close round, but Frederiksen looks to be the more comfortable fighter while dictating the pace. Gsp comes out aggressively for round 4. Nothing landing for either fighter as Gsp is working to clinch up. Without any significant damage to either man, Frederiksen gets the nod as he remains calm against Gsp's attempts to make something happen. Gsp opens the fifth looking for the takedown, but Frederiksen counters with a right. Frederiksen scores the takedown and both show signs of exhaustion. Frederiksen scores with an elbow to keep Gsp moving before the ref stands them up. Gsp goes for it with time running out, but Frederiksen has him swinging at air and lands a takedown. A submission attempt before the buzzer and Russia claims the very first champion in USFC's history as Fred Frederiksen takes the heavyweight gold!
Grant Knight (1-0) def. Manny Berao (2-1) TKO (Strikes) Rnd 1
Berao thinks about opening with strikes and Knight makes him pay with a couple of hooks. Knight gets a good shot in before Berao takes him down. Berao tryies to control, missing with shots before deciding to stand. The brown belt apparently wants to work from the clinch and Knight drops him with a 1-2 before waving him back to his feet. The staggered Berao shoots but Knight cracks him sending him to the mat again. Berao pops up, shoots the takedown, and gets hammered again as Knight decides to follow him down with strikes before the ref jumps in. Knight lands 21 of 23 strikes in a convincing victory and immediately calls for his title shot. The hype continues to build and Knight's popularity makes him a favorite to challenge for the belt in the near future.
Bruce Patterson (3-2) def. Nixy Souch (2-3) Decision (Majority) Rnd 3
Patterson opens with a takedown and works the ground and pound. Souch reverses and Patterson holds on, forcing the stand up. Souch scores a takedown and Patterson uses wrist control until the bell. Souch misses with a takedown attempt to start the second, and Patterson counters with one of his own. Souch is the more active fighter from his back while working for subs until the end of the round. Souch misses another takedown to start the third and Patterson takes him down again. Souch works for a submission and Patterson stands. Souch scores a takedown and the two work control until the stand up. Patterson gets another takedown before Souch reverses and attempts to work some GnP before the end of the fight. The judges give the edge to Patterson's takedowns and control in a close one.
Charles Bolton (2-0) def. Gunnar Nelson (2-1) KO (Punches) Rnd 3
Bolton defends 22 takedown attempts over the first two rounds while taking target practice on Nelson. Nelson pursues the takedown at all costs and gets worked over as Bolton puts on a boxing clinic. Bolton begins the third by immediately dropping Nelson, who awaits the finish on the ground. Bolton waves him up and immediately drops him with a wicked combination. Bolton is toying with his prey now. Nelson stands and Bolton flattens him with another big right hand, then swarms as the ref saves the unconscious Nelson. Bolton receives cheers from the crowd and looks to be the real deal as Nelson finds himself on the free agent list, unlikely to come back from the brutal beating.
Mikey Schulman (3-0) def. Terrence Harris (1-1) Decision (Majority) Rnd 3
Harris opens with a big right hand , but Schulman shrugs it off, lands a takedown, and looks for a submission. Harris looks to stand, and Schulman lets him up. Harris lands two nice combinations and Schulman decides to take it back down to the mat. Schulman manages to land one shot before the ref stands them up. Harris landing to the body now and Schulman is missing with several takedown attempts. Harris moves into the clinch and lands a nice shot to Schulman's jaw before the end of the round. Round 2 opens as Harris clinches, defends the takedown, then surprisingly pulls guard! The ref stands them up and Schulman scores a a few more takedowns while controlling the pace. Schulman with more takedowns, followed by ref stand ups before Harris moves into the clinch just before the bell. Schulman lands a couple of takedowns in round 3, but can't get the ground and pound going before ref stand ups. Schulman scores a third takedown and rides it to the decision victory.
L Manning Vines (2-0) def. Tim Taddow (3-2) Submission (Kimura) Rnd 1*
Taddow opens with a leg kick and Vines checks it nicely. Vines feints a takedown, but holds up. Taddow with another leg kick and Vines times it perfectly, scoring the takedown. Vines works a little ground and pound and tranitions to side control. Taddow's wrestling is useless while on his back and Vines make the kimura look easy, winning Sub of the Night honors in just 24 seconds of the first round!
Homer Thompson (2-1-1) def. Roda Macron (4-4) KO (Punches) Rnd 1*
Thompson opens the fight with a 1-2 before missing with a big overhand right. Macron looks good as he avoids another combo from Thompson. Macron gets popped in the eye and covers up from another combination. Thompson's shot finds Macron's chin and he comes over the top with a big left hand that has Macron in trouble! Macron drops his hands as Thompson feints a low kick, and Thopmson lands a massive right, followed by a devastating left hook, and walks away as Macron falls unconscious! I think Macron was out with that first shot, but the left was already on the way! Credit Thompson with knowing his opponent was done and holding back on more strikes. Thompson wins KO of the Night with a 37 second knockout!
Dulok Malek (1-1) def. American American Anderson Weedman (0-1) Decision (Unanimous) Rnd 3
Weedman opens the fight with a takedown and attempts some ground and pound. Malek is actively working for a stand up, but Weedman controls well. The ref is not happy to let Weedman ride it out and stands them up. Weedman shows his dominant takedown game and gets Malek back to the mat. The ref stands them up after Weedman attampts more control. Another takedown, but Malek is able to pop right back up. Weedman opens with a takedown to start round 2, but it leads to another referee stand up. Weedman fails with a takedown and Malek looks to find the range as he lands a few shots. Weedman unable to land with his own shots as Malek is beginning to connect. Malek looks tired as Weedman lands the takedown and goes for a submission. Malek defends the kimura and gets another stand up from the ref. Weedman with another takedown before the bell. Malek's flurry may have stolen the round! Malek opens the third landing shots to the head and body, but Weedman takes him down quickly. Weedman works on an ankle and Malek narrowly escapes the submission and reverses position. Weedman controls the wrists and forces a stand up. Weedman lands another takedown and both seem content to lay there until the end of the fight. The ref stands them up as the crowd boos. Weedman attempts a combination that misses just before the bell. Malek wins a unanimous decision as the judges award his striking rather than Weedman's takedowns.
Curtis Mayfield (3-1) def. Marshall Silverstien (2-5) Decision (Unanimous) Rnd 3
Mayfield rushes into the clinch and begins nailing Silverstien with strikes! Good body shot there from Mayfield as he looks to be in complete control early. Mayfield defends the takedown attempts before deciding to take it to the ground himself. Mayfield begins working for an arm forcing Silverstien to scramble. The two reverse position until the end of the round. Mayfield moves back into the clinch to start the second and begins punishing Silverstien with more effective body shots. Mayfield in complete control against the cage before pulling guard, reversing Silverstien, then missing with some GnP and a sub before the end of the round. Mayfield opens the third as he did the first two, immediately moving into the clinch and blasting Silverstien with damaging body shots. Mayfield decides to pull guard and works a few different submission attempts. Silverstien can't get anything going and Mayfield becomes content to fight for the decision as the round comes to a close. Mayfield gets the victory and improves to 3-1 as he enters the title picture in the featherweight division.
It was a great night of fights as the United States Fighting Championship put together an exciting championship card for the New York fans! The hype begins to build around top prospects, and two fighters have emerged as the men to beat in their divisions! The bar has been set high for future championships as the main event drew loud cheers from the MMA fans! Congratulations to USFC champions Jules Winnfield and Fred Frederiksen!
