"The Anger" Has Taken Frankie Drake Places

Fighter profile of Frankie Drake by Abe Eaton

Frankie "The Anger" Drake (224085), 16-2 finds himself facing a rematch for the Death Squad Lightweight (155lb) World Title on December 20th at the Parisian at Las Vegas during Deathsquad 264 (848227).  Currently ranked 14th in the world in his weight class and among the top 100 pound-for-pound fighters, Drake has been a shooting star with staying power.  Drake is coming off of a solid win for his sixth title fight and fifth title defense, a nice triangle armbar against a former multiple time champion and seasoned veteran.

At 28, Drake is no stranger to the fight game.  It all began in Tavistock, England, where Frankie was a well-known bare knuckle boxer and submission grappler.  He competed in regional fights and quickly demonstrated an acumen for submission grappling and became a surprising sleeper striker, knocking out fighters on the ground and feet.  He can stand toe to toe with top notch strikers, but its a game he plays on the edge, knowing the next punch could be the end of his ride.

With 10 stoppages by decision, a grinding fighting style, a kryptonite chin, Drake has stood out as a warrior.  He's never been submitted despite being in precarious positions.  Frankie Drake claims he was taught by Royce Gracie, and in his fighting style, he pays homage to the first son of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Currently holding a brown belt, Drake is in the dojo for a few hours a week working hard on his black belt.  He also brings a wrestling A game, with precision takedowns from standing or clinch, a great amateur background as a shoot fighter, and ability to control and submit his opponents on the ground almost effortlessly.

Going into his rematch against Romeo Hernanes, the very same man he beat to win the title, Drake is calm and composed, but you wouldn't know it if you could see him destroy punching and speed bags.  "We've got a well-rounded training program going for him in a great gym.  Of course we're preparing for his next opponent, but we always cross train," said Drake's manager, Abe Eaton (85551).  Frankie Drake defeated Hernanes at 4:25 in round 3 of a 5 round championship fight, with an armbar from mount, after a mostly one sided affair where "The Anger" answered his opponent's standup game, surviving and the clinch and managing to get the fight to his level.

Drake, for his part, said he expects Hernanes to be a different opponent and is looking forward to the opportunity to quiet the remaining naysayers.  "I've cleaned out the whole bloody division, mate.  Someone new?  I've done it.  I'm looking to take my game to a new level," Drake mused at a recent post-fight conference.  With three more fights on his contract, Drake said he would vacate the belt at the end of his contract and move on to more fierce competition, if and when he still held the title at that time.  He thanked Death Squad for all its support and said he would be willing to stay with a superfight or the opportunity to fight in another weight class to freshen things up.

Frankie says that his Anger works like fictional X-men Character Magneto.  "It's like, I got superpowers, right?  Not really, but yeah...I get in this place in my head where the fight is slow motion, and that's when I wreck stuff, mate."  He credits his ability to focus on his past life as a self-professed football hooligan.  "Always had to be watching my back.  Never turning my back on friends or enemies.  Caesar fell because he was weak."  One thing is for sure, on December 20th, Hernanes doesn't want to make Frankie Drake angry, because, per Drake, "I'm f***** nuts when I'm mad.  Bones get broken, careers get ended, skulls get fractured, tracheas crushed.  If this wasn't legal I'd be in prison, for sure."

Be sure to catch the event.  You won't want to miss it.  Will Frankie "The Anger" Drake be victorious once again over Romeo Hernanes, or will Hernanes, on a nice career high, take back the belt.  Tune in to find out.
