Organization: Cage Fights Australia (CFA)
Date: Saturday 07 Jul 2012
City: Sydney
Arena: Hyashi's Lounge - Sydney (2,000)
As we stand at the precipice of the Show down between Anderson “The Spider Silva and Chael “Do I ever shut up” Sonnen we have to wonder how the contest will unfold. With an undisputed underdog surprise in their first meeting it shows you can never count out anyone as when the cage door closes there is nothing but you to back up yourself up.
As we have seen many times at the CFA events as egos have been damaged, rising stars are watched and reputations put on the line.
Which of course is the Segway into “GO MAROONS” as the blues and New south Welshman open their tissue boxes and dry their eyes going down in the history books for allowing Qld to win a 7th straight State of Origin.
Stretching a winning streak and digging in the boots not unlike the 9 game winning streak 87-89 The MMA training centres and the CFA tonight has seen an influx of rugby players coming to see what it means to be hard as obviously the Princess Factor has taken hold as they can’t man up more often than not and with the last kick missing for extra time could only be described as CHOKE!
And with some great ground fighters making the weight ins and seasoned training sleepers such as Raphael Bowie oh yes a man who has had only 6 fights in his career that could have seen 20+ a lot of behind the scenes tactics and development has gone into the BEAST creation model.
On that note the crowd settles as with silent appraise oh yeah the man does not even bother with entry music he is such a grey man. Raphael Bowie approaches the cage for his fight.

205 lbs. 3 x 5 Minute Rounds Raphael Bowie (6-0) v Hugh Jontop (6-3)
Bowie entering the ring looking a full weight class above what we see him fighting at makes Hugh Jontop look anything but what his name would want you to think….overcompensating perhaps?
With Jontop coming off a demoralizing loss whilst attempt to gain the light heavy weight title has shown he has superior hand speed and skills which would appear to be his key to victory over his undefeated opponent.
With Yelawolf having the superior ground skills, Jontop is looking anxious as his only loses are from the ground game and his Purple Belt being less than impressive in the past.
With Jontop looking to start with a striking game he was quickly on his back from a driving takedown that he looked to show case his BJJ and prove his Purple belt ability with an immediate submission attempt.
Coming up short Bowie started to stifle the attack of Bowie and then turning it on used a combination of Ground and Pound and ground control that also resulted in 4 failed submission attempts as Bowie looked to save some pride as he was owned from pillar to post.
Round two was a repeat as the night got worse for Jontop and after being takedown easy tried everything he could without any success to get away from Bowie as he was punched at will and again his only saving grace was the ability to fend off 6 submission attempts and prove he was not a Gumby belt.
But as the onslaught continued and the stream of punched where not stopping a cut emerged on the forehead of Jontop and with another defensive fight to get away from a submission was mounted and as Bowie postured up for good measure cracked some telling blows onto his forehead making blood spurt out and his vision become obviously impaired with blood now covering his face.
With so much blood the referee made an early call and bought the doctor into the mix. Something that would see him stop the fight as he cleared the blood a little to show the cracked cranium of Jontop and increase the winning streak of Bowie to 7 from as many starts.
Winner Raphael Bowie (7-0) over Hugh Jontop (6-4) by TKO (cut) 4:57 Round 2

265+ lbs. 3 x 5 Minute Rounds Koko Knut (4-1) v Aaron Miller (3-0)
Miller taking on an opponent that is much bigger and well outside his normal weight class while fighting at a 265+ weight class is honourable he is well and truly putting a perfect career record in jeopardy.  However with Miller being highly rated and outclassing Knut with is hands, Knut would be looking for doing anything but standing or getting held down by the ground and pound ability of Miller.
Can Knut use his height and weight to his advantage and punish Miller; with his presence in the ring looking determined he looks ready to ensure this fight is ended quickly and with dominance.
With the bell ringing it was like a red flag had been waved and Miller was the Bull to the matador Miller. Knut was back pedalling and looking anything but intimidating as his size was negated by the ferocity of strikes being thrown. Within seconds Knut was cut and has a huge welt under his left eye.
Looking to scramble and going for the takedown found him in no man’s land as it was stuffed and then he was clinched by Miller. Still looking to find a way to shut Miller down and use his size Knut picked Miller up from the clinch and dumping him to the ground was less than impressed as he Miller landed in his guard.
Going for a Submission proved to be futile as Miller easily escaped as the fight staged somewhat Knut managed to stand.
The fight was then back and forth with Millers hand showing an advantage that Knut was finding it hard to handle. With Miller pressing the action Knut could not seem to find his range as he was defending the clinch and takedown along with scrambling to his feet more often than he liked and not getting time to get his game plan flowing.
With a decisive take down late in Round 1 Knut struggled to find any way out only to be mounted and after defending a submission attempt looked to buck Miller off only to be hit with a couple of heavy strikes for his trouble which was not help to his ever worsening cut, then as the round closed out could not protect another blow landing flush and splitting his eye well and truly open and causing some serious damage.
Having made it to round 2 was no easy accomplishment with his eye mended some the best a corner could muster he was going into a round with one eye and some serious trouble seeing the hands of Miller little own being able to counter them.
With Miller coming out determined to again get the fight to the ground Knut defended well and with some counter tactics the fight was a war of will as the fighters smashed, and clinched and sprawl and then just looked exhausted. With both fighters gassed and only a minute down Miller got yet another takedown only to see Knut fight back to his feet only to shoot for his own takedown and then get punched with a precision punch on his right eye again which saw Knit wince and blood freely stream down his cheek.
Miller then got another takedown and Knut looking perplexed as to how he could counter the punishment used his position on the ground to get some energy back as Knut fought hard to get out. But with a burst of energy Miller threw all reserves into two hammer fists that saw blood spurt out of Knut into the front row of spectators. As woman screamed to get out of the way and their boyfriends laughed at their actions the referee had seen enough and finally called for the doctor to see to the injury. With Knut showing a warrior class he shrugged it off and readied for action but when you can’t see the doctor’s finger your night is over.
Winner Aaron Miller (4-0) over Koko Knut (4-2) by TKO (Cuts) 2:36 round 2 and fight of the night honours.

170 lbs. 3 x 5 Minute Rounds Lukas Brantley (7-3) v Nick Diaz (5-4)
Coming into his first CFA event from Tetragrammaton Clerics Academy and on a 5 fight win streak Brantley has more than steadied his career he has started to forge a path of glory. His opponent Diaz has been sporadic in his career and notably absent from the cage since CFA 17. With a lot of training under his belt and positioning himself to stop a great winning streak will Diaz spoil the debut of Brantley and be able to put to use his Brown Belt and push his career back to the winning column.
Brantley came out like a mad man swinging with ill intent and looking to take Diaz’s head off; with some air swings he then hit his mark and split open Diaz’s nose and with a drilled determination immediately followed into a forceful takedown.
But whether he landed wrong or just had a brain fart Brantley seemed to pause what a critical mistake. Diaz had an expression of “How do you like these apples” and he show cased his obvious BJJ trained and before Brantley could even fathom the deep shit he had now landed himself in was saying goodnight as Diaz wasted no time in putting him to sleep.
Winner Nick Diaz (5-5) over Lukas Brantley (7-4) by Submission (Triangle) 0:30 round 1.

205 lbs. 3 x 5 Minute Rounds Huey Freeman (7-4) v Gabriel Halo (3-0)
Freeman may have more than double the fights of his opponent Halo, but with stand all his wins coming from submissions and all his losses being T(KO)s he may very well be in be a very short night as Halo has been known to have a long and extensive training career in Boxing and Muay Thai. With his skill unmatched by Freeman, Halo will be looking to make a highlight reel finish and progress his unbeaten career.
With Freeman coming out and looking to intimidate Halo he stalked around the cage and as he telegraphed his strikes Halo countered with crisp responses to show he was not going to be taken lightly. Freeman tried to smile as the hits came in and as an uppercut landed found he would have a nice scar on his chin for the arrogance.
Still he pushed forward and got picked apart from every angle. As he then got to close Halo seized the clinch and after a nice knee and elbow landed Freeman thought twice of staying up and swiftly pulled guard.
Then again pushing for a win looked to grab a submission of his back however after a couple of failed attempts Halo managed to get out of all trouble pushed off and got back to his feet.
Freeman thought he was on a winner with the ground game and now looked to get it back to the ground only to get another strike splitting his cut wider and now producing a nice blood source.
As the went for another takedown Halo sprang from a successful sprawl and let loose with a well-timed and successful attack starting with a jab that rocked Freeman and great composure picked his openings and landed a telling right hand that turned the lights out for Freeman
Winner Gabriel Halo (4-0) over Huey Freeman (7-5) by KO (Punch) 3:56 Round 1
185 lbs. 3 x 5 Minute Rounds Gassimatt Low (5-4) v Jade Malikai (2-5)
Low having broken his shocking 3 loss streak in his last outing is fighting Malikai who himself in looking to get himself out of a 3 loss streak. With Low having a distinct advantage through his hands and boxing will not be taking Malikai’s less than impressive record as he is overpowered in every other category and likely to run into trouble if the fight his the ground.
Low darting in for an immediate clinch seemed to look to gain some control before he felt the swift knee of Malikai who then used the space to pull guard.
Thinking he could win of his back Malikai control Low and stopped any attempt to get back to his feet, before he utilised a flawless sweep and was in the full mount.
With Low looking to get out of a bad position it only went from bad to worse as Malikai took his back and though he seemed to be defending well was unable to get out of trouble as on the second attempt Malikai sunk in his arm under the chin and leverage enough space to perform the Rear Naked Choke as Low had no choice other than to tap.
Winner Jade Malikai (3-5) over Gassimatt Low (5-5) by Submission (RNC) 2:59 Round 1

205 lbs. 3 x 5 Minute Rounds Joseph Bulger (2-1) v Tetsuhiko Asai (5-6)
Bulger enters the ring with everyone still bowing their heads in memory of the little boy of the all too similar name, but all can’t help but feel he will get his own back tonight as Asai looks like he couldn’t remove the skin off custard. Coming off a loss and obviously using his time to hit the bars and drown his sorrow. Asai looks more like he is ready for a bum fight as all the money is on Bulger having everything but the Muay Thai skill over Asai, but when you are wear piss stained clothes may it be from a leaking suprapubic catheterization or just inability to undo your zip who can blame Bulger for beating a bum that dares enter the cage unprepared.
With the fight starting it truly was a bum beating as Asai showed no resistance to an immediate takedown and with Bulger trying to beat the smell out of him like an old carpet thought better of wasting his time and sealed an easy and effortless submission.
Winner Joseph Bulger (3-1) over Tetsuhiko “The Smelly Bum” Asai (5-7) 0:40 Submission (Arm Triangle) round 1

265+ lbs. 3 x 5 Minute Rounds Oscar Torres (5-5) v Leonid Kirgiakos (5-3)
With Kirgiakos being unlucky enough to come to the CFA to get his career back on track only to run into a devastating up and coming power house Ben Ladin at CFA 19 he is once again met with a challenge that may well be out of his reach. With Torres having a very even Steven Career to date he has been hidden away at a training camp with a long layoff and preparation to make a true change in his ability. Has it been enough will still have to be seen as his opponent has shown he has the ability to win and just needs to find the mental fortitude to get him back on track?
As both men came to fight they came out hard and fast at each other as Torres landed the nice shin to the face of Kirgiakos and producing a nice cut to boot. But without missing a beat the two men continued on a determined path as they traded shots back and forth however Torres kept finding air and his obvious frustration could be seen.
Torres managed to finally get some success with a takedown after the third minute but then on the ground was again met with frustration as the fight stagnated into the referee standing it up and again the defence of each fighter was not allowing any real action to open up.
Torres started round 2 looking to get something going and with a quick clinch and as he pushed Kirgiakos against the cage made a decision to get in on the ground by pulling guard.
With Torres slowly the match down a stare from the referee saw him narrowly miss a couple of strikes from Kirgiakos and then finally switched on his ground game and on his third attempt as he pushed back towards the cage seized the neck of Kirgiakos and the submission win.
Winner Oscar Torres (6-5) over Leonid Kirgiakos (5-4) by Submission (Guillotine) 1:59 Round 2.

205 lbs. 3 x 5 Minute Rounds Danny Trejo (1-0) v Chris Cook (1-0)
With two young and undefeated fighters facing off, it would appear that Trejo has well and truly overcooked himself in training as he went to the weigh-ins and had to be helped by his manager and trainer just to stand.
It may not bode well for him tonight in the cage as he still looks exhausted and with the need to keep the fight standing, he may very well not have the energy to sprawl and defend the takedown which would be a turn for the worse.
As the bell rang both fighters sprang across the cage with youthful enthusiasm and their zero column at jeopardy.
With each failing their first takedown attempts Trejo drew first blood as he  managed to clinch and push Cook against the cage and the clinch was then broken and a couple of missed opportunities to gain the upper hand Trejo countered a failed takedown from Cook with a takedown of his own.
With barley 40 seconds of fight action gone the adrenaline had gotten to Cook as he was now on his back and seemingly shot his wad as he now looked gassed and was not about to get punished.
Cook could put up little resistance as Trejo advanced to better position and then applied some submission pressure which was met with some defence but it was too little as he was caught in a Kimura and was forced to tap.
Winner Danny Trejo (2-0) over Chris Cook (1-1) by Submission (Kimura) 1:57 round 1

170 lbs. 3 x 5 Minute Rounds King Jan Kasimir (1-0) v Franklin Richards (0-0)
As Richards enters for his debut fight against Kasimir. He is looking to stare down a tough ask to beat an opponent from a very respectable and highly touted stable of Master Ishii. With two title holders to call upon for a game plan and fighting preparation Richards will be looking to throw everything into getting the fight on the ground and keeping it there.
With no match for the Kasimir stand up, he will be hoping his stellar wrestling background and defence nature of avoiding strikes will be enough to bring him about his first professional win.
Starting the fight Richards was shaken early as his first takedown failed and Kasimir quickly launched a flying knee that nearly rang his bell.
With his second attempt a more driving success Richard had the fight where he wanted it, but was now being met with devastating defence as his school was disgraced as he was unable to finish 5 submissions against his white belt opponent.
As the ground action then ground to a halt the referee stood up the fighters much to the appreciation of Kasimir.
With Richards then pressing to get the fight down again he failed with 4 successive attempts and now feeling the tanks empty was pounced on by Kasimir as 30 seconds of attack had Richards unable to find a breather as he was chopped down and punched into a need to be helped by the referee.
Winner King Jan Kasimir (2-0) over Franklin Richards (0-1) by TKO(punches) 2:43 round 1.
