Event Preview: UGD 25:Poole Vs Palmer

The Underground is ready to surface.

Deeply rooted in London’s underbelly, UGD has been swelling with rapid growth in recent (Tycoon) years. DFC Origins started the seedlings of a 48 card run, which eventually led to the sale to new owner, Jamie McKenna. Originally a feeder org for UPF in Hilo, Jamie has quietly moulded it into one of the top 260k orgs in the known Tycoon world.

With the help of a number of amazing managers and ICON, we’re proud the present the biggest card in organizational history, UGD 25: Poole v Palmer.

{FW} Jerry “Hurricane” Haze (14-2 MMA) vs. Wu Fei Chung (7-1 MMA, 6-0 UGD)

Getting things started on the main card is a Superfight in the featherweight division, as our featherweight champion Wu Fei Chung takes on British star Jerry Haze. Somewhat unheralded when he came to our organization, Chung has since torn through the division with malice. After taking out former long-time champion Jeff Gower in his second fight for the org, he’s stopped every man who’s been in with the cage with since. With sharp standup and a dangerous submission game, the Hong Kong born fighter is as slick as they come.

His opponent will be Jerry Haze, a former openweight champion here in London who comes in after a (Tycoon) year hiatus. The Cambridge standout possesses devastating knees, punishing kicks and slick hands. Despite his standup prowess, Haze can also mix in some takedowns and ground and pound. On paper, it appears Haze might have a slight advantage on the feet, with Chung having the same on the floor. Whatever happens, it should be the perfect kickoff to the rest of the main card.

{WW} Hans Huber (13-4 MMA) vs. Ray Lewis (7-1 MMA, 2-1 UGD)

Next up we’ll see a striking showcase at welterweight, as Germany’s Hans Huber will make his UGD debut against American Ray Lewis. Huber has spent a number of years fighting at the elite level in orgs like Legacy, while capturing titles in the SPI: Helsinki and Havoc organizations.

Huber is coming off a (Tycoon) year of inactivity and a title loss, so look for him to target his heavy hands and look for a statement KO.  His opponent Ray Lewis is also coming off of a title loss but a much more recent one. Lewis has otherwise looked unbeatable in his career and also possesses heavy hands and technical distance striking. The two seem to be pretty evenly matched on the feet, so look for another tense fight here.

{SHW Title} Taras "Kobzar" Shevchenko (15-2 MMA, 15-2 UGD) vs. Mark Tremblay (7-2 MMA, 4-2 UGD)

Ukranian UGD lifer Taras Shevchenko started his run over 5 (Tycoon) years ago at DFC Fight Night III. It was his MMA debut and it didn’t go so well against a hometown favourite, as a cut stopped his night early. Since then, however, it’s been all gravy. With a lethal mix ground and pound and guard play, the Ukrainian has dispatched 15 of his 16 opponents since and has now defended his title four times in his second term as champion.

After cleaning out his division, his new opponent will be a Canadian light-heavyweight stalwart in Mark Tremblay. Tremblay has a similar mix of g’np and submissions, but is also known to mix it up on the feet. The Canadian fighter appears to have the skills to finally end Shevchenko’s run, but he will be giving up about 50 lbs on fight night. I’m really intrigued to see how this plays out.

{LW Title} Charlie Wax (14-3 MMA, 2-0 UGD) vs. Leif "Captain Hook" Olofson (11-1-1 MMA, 1-0 UGD)

Two of the absolute best 260k lightweights in the world will tangle next, as longtime Havoc champion Charlie Wax takes on longtime MMA Gods champion Leif Olofson in what should be a total war. Wax spent most of his career fighting at welterweight but dropped down to lightweight when he signed with UGD. Formerly a skilled-but-undersized man at his former weight, The American looks like a killer at his new weight with devastating standup skills at range and in the clinch.

His second defence of his newfound UGD gold will be against another scary man in Swedish wildcard, Leif Olofson. “Captain Hook” is a fan favourite with his unorthodox stance, posture, looks, mic skills and … well, let’s just say there isn’t anything “orthodox” about the man. Once the bell rings, though, Olofson is a scary whirlwind of a fighter. Elbows, knees, punches, kicks and submissions are all fair game once the man gets going. The winner stakes his claim as the cream of the crop at lightweight.

{HW Title} Will “The Butcher” Poole (13-1 MMA, 4-0 UGD) vs.  “Honey” Roy Palmer (9-3 MMA)

And finally our main event, as Will Poole returns from a successful Superfight in the Canadian Fighting Championship organization to defend what is rightly his, the UGD heavyweight title. Poole arrived in UGD under the tutelage of the legendary Dean Sutherland and quickly claimed the title. After Sutherland’s disappearance, we were lucky to see another legendary manager in Mr Wolf take over as manager. The book on Poole is as simple as it’s scary: elite standup and resolve. And when I say elite, I god damn mean it this time, folks.

If you’re planning on standing with Mr. Poole, then plan on having a miserable night. It’s a good thing then that people like Roy Palmer exist then. Palmer is one of those lucky few that actually mean it when they say they’ll fight anyone anytime. Palmer lives in the pocket with a heavy right hand, but can also find his distance with a decent kicking game. Palmer’s real x-factor here is his size, strength and his love for the fight. He’s one of those scary dudes who smiles back the more you hit ‘em.

This is going to be chaos, my friends.

See you down at the Camden Conference Centre on Saturday night!
