HFC 21 Conlon VS Chernishev  (873407)
November 9, 2016
At Wild Bob's Bar - London
in conjunction with Versus Merchandise

Undercard:

Randy Miller vs Ferrel Ferrari

In this first fight we have two fighters making their MMA debuts. The Texan, Randy Miller, has a strong Muy Thai base, and is evidently training in Brazilian Ju-Jitsu at FIERCE gym in London. The only advantage apparent on paper in this matchup is that Ferral Ferrari seems to have a slight edge in Muy Thai standup striking and a decent history in wrestling in his hometown of Argentina. Coupled with being the 7 year elder, Ferrari has to be regarded as the clear cut favorite in this contest.
Prediction: Ferrari TKO (Strikes) early second round.

Jiaan Jatt vs Demian Maia

The old boxer/striker vs submission artist in this second bout of the night. Both are young with Jatt at 19 years of age, and Maia with one more year of experience at 20. Maia has four MMA contests under his belt with a record of 3-1 and Jatt stepping up with a record of 1-0. Maia has a decisive edge in experience, but with that being said he is coming off a devistating TKO loss where he just couldn't manage to take the fight to the ground where he is in his element. The chances are slim but if Jatt has some KO power and just enough takedown defense he could pull out an upset.
Prediction: Maia Submission win late second round.

Eric Hambro vs Artur Aleksanyan

These two squared off at HFC 17 in a bout that was won by Aleksanyan late in the second round. Unless Hambro has been working hard on some elements of the ground game at the School of Hard Knocks I don't see a different result in this rematch. Aleksanyan seems to be young and intelligent and at this stage of the game the sky is the limit for the Armenian brown belt ju-jitsu artist.
Prediction: Aleksanyan second round submission.

Punt Hardman vs Jack Jackhammer

Rounding out the undercard we have a fight that appears to be Hardman's to lose. On paper the only advantage Jackhammer has is in the Muy Thai discipline. The problem is he hasn't demonstrated enough power to score a finish in his two prior bouts with one coming by way of submission and the other by decision. Hardman is more experienced and more skilled in BJJ. He also seems to be working on boxing skill at the cheapest gym in Rio. Hardman has one loss on his record by TKO, but I believe he has just enough standup to take this fight to the ground with him in a favorable position to grind out some sort of submission.
Prediction: Hardman RNC first round.

Main Card:

Cub Lamas vs Jhon Bronks

Kicking off the main card is another striker vs grappler matchup between the Brit Lamas and American Jhon Bronks. The usual striker vs grappler tactics are in play here but to add another layer of drama, both these fighters seem to be in a funk. Lamas won the featherweight title in HFC 8, successfully defended it at HFC 11, only to lose it at HFC 15 by a brutal KO loss. Bronks is the aspiring submission artist looking to turn the corner with his stalemate record of 2-2. The question is which fighter can dig deep and gather the morale to outperform the other here.
Prediction: Lamas TKO late first round.

Micky Ward vs Libio Do Santos

The second fight on the main card is between former middleweight champ Micky Ward and up and coming submission artist Libio Do Santos. Ward has the edge in experience having held the middleweight title briefly only to lose by TKO at HFC 12 when he just couldn't escape the clinch of Taylor Pickerage. He's since bounced back with an outstanding head kick KO victory which won him the KO of the night award for that event. Do Santos only has 2 fights on his record winning both by submission, but I feel that this is just too big of a jump in competition for him.
Prediction: Ward KO (head kick) second round.

Aidan Foster vs Farnad Behpour

The recurring theme on this main card appears to be striker vs grappler. The same can be said for this super heavyweight bout, although Behpour seems to be more of a well rounded point fighter with some above average boxing in his repertoire. The underlying story here is Foster capturing and relinquishing the Super Heavyweight title in back to back bouts and Behpour losing his chance at the title against the current holder Josh McCarthy. The longer the fight goes the better Behpour's chance at a win, but I think he is too well rounded and not specialized enough to win the chess match here.
Prediction: Foster kimura early second round.

Reed Money vs Chris Conley

Both fighters in this last fight of the main card have some degree of standup. Money the heavy handed sprawl and brawler should have the striking edge over the BJJ based Conley with a good background in boxing. If Conley can find a way to take it to the mat he could very well pull out an upset, but as it is Money has the ball in his court. He's demonstrated good takedown defense and definitely has power to end this early.
Prediction: Money TKO (strikes) first round.

Co-Main Event:
Josh McCarthy vs Kurt Angle

McCarthy is the reigning Super Heavyweight Champ with 2 successful title defenses in his last two bouts. He is a force to be reckoned with never going past the first round and every fight decided by finish. He has two losses on his record coming by way of submissions. The question here is does Angle, the point fighter, have the speed and agility to evade a relentless onslaught from McCarthy. I suppose the longer the fight goes and the closer we get to leaving the fight in the judges hands the higher Angle's chance to have his hand raised in victory.
Prediction: McCarthy KO (punch) first round.

Main Event:
Brendan Conlon vs Sergey Chernishev

In the main event of the evening we have the undefeated Brendan Conlon defending his title vs an also undefeated and talented youngster Sergey Chernishev. Conlon has finished 4 of his 5 fights with one decision victory. Sergey has finished both his bouts by way of TKO. Sergey was a wrestling juggernaut in his home country Russia. He seems to favor a ground and pound style. Conlon is more of a pure submission artist who has already demonstrated he has the conditioning to go the distance and win on points if need be. This should be an interesting ground fight with Conlon trying to capitalize on any mistakes by the youthful Sergey.
Prediction: Conlon retains his title by Armbar late in the first round.
