BFC 12 Hard Knocks 11 August 2012

"This Saturday, 11th Of August, fresh from the arena spectacular of BFC: publicity stunt , St-Petersberg based promotion Brutal Fighting Championships return to the more intimate setting of Hard Knocks- which last saw the promotion here for BFC super wednesday 2 just a few weeks ago. That night over 2,800 fight fans packed out the hall to see Maraco Draco, making his BFC début after carving out a 10 fight career in Helsinki, become the new BFC bantam weight champion.

Headlining this weeks card is light heavyweight champion Quentin Costa (6-1 MMA 1-0 BFC) making the first defence of his belt against knockout artist Og Kush (23-12 MMA, 2-1 BFC). Kush made his case for the title shot with a highlight reel knock out of Malu Munoz that earned him the 6th KO of the night award of his career. The veteran striker will be looking to continue his streak of knock out stoppages against the champion. The champion and Russian top team product Costa, has claimed to be happy where ever the fight takes place, but surely will look to make use of his BJJ brown belt to dominate Kush (who has been submitted 3 times in his career- most recently in his BFC début by previous 205lb king Jimmy Esperanza) on the matt.

The co-main event sees a classic striker vs grappler contest take place between two of the heavyweight division's hottest new prospects- local wrestler and bjj purple belt Ignat Kaigorodov (3-1 MMA, 2-1 BFC) takes on heavy handed Ukrainian Fedor Overeem (4-1 MMA, 3-1 BFC).

Overeem has won 3 of his last 4- taking less than 5 minutes of total time to dispatch Yablonski, Charmer and Shrisov, all by way of knockout. Ignat, a ground and pound specialist with sharp elbows will be next to test his chin against the ukrainian- Ignat is looking to bounce back from his first defeat, a 41 second KO at the hands of Syroivy at BFC10. This fight looks set to be explosive, exciting and fast!

The main card is opened by two fighters who, in their previous fights, have lost to tonight's main event combatants. Maxim Mailov (11-10 MMA, 0-1 BFC), suffered a brutal first round TKO at the hands of title challenger Kush, his second attempt to make a mark in the promotion comes against former division champion and two time fight of the night winner Jimmy Esperanza (23-21 MMA, BFC 2-1). Esperanza seeks to bounce back from a 5 round decision loss to Costa and prove that at the age of 30 he is still relevant to the title picture. With a combined 65 MMA fights under their belts these two veterans look set to put on a masterclass that the younger fighters should pay close attention to.

Following on from the 205ers is a battle of heavyweight veterans as Finnish kick-boxer Lex Luther (13-12, 0-1) travels to face Irish grappler Derek Hunt (8-5, 0-2). Neither fighter has really been able to get it together since joining BFC- which only stands as testament to the current state of Russian MMA being fostered by the promotion. In Hunt's promotional début he suffered a 35 second TKO against 265lb king Velasquez on his road to the title, a feet followed up by David Abbott Jnr in the second round of their BFC10 bout. Luther entered the promotion at BFC10 where he got caught in a first round arm bar by BJJ brown belt Elbrys Gora. Each fighter has had time to reflect on their earlier performances so don't expect any rash mistakes from either side in this clash.

Rounding out the main card is a featherweight duel between 2 unbeaten 145lb prospects. James DeFuria (3-0 MMA, 3-0 BFC) was most recently seen in the cage at BFC fight night 3 where he earned knock out of the night honours against Polish wrestler Abrak Basangur. His opponent will be London based American Barry “the flash” Allen (2-0 MMA 1-0 BFC) himself coming off a devastating KO win with a spectacular head-kick finish of promotional newcommer Vladimir “lenin” Ulyanov. Both men put their unbeaten record on the line, for one the streak will be broken, for the other a chance to put themselves ahead of the pack of young up and commers and one step closer to a possible future title shot.
