 As you lace up your gloves and plow through the crowds at Boxing Day Sales Events, we've got you covered like Christmas Dinner leftovers as we recap what went down at OFC 243: Black Christmas V! Hope everyone had an awesome Holiday and got everything they asked for! But while we were busy stuffing our faces and funneling eggnog, there were fighters punching faces and finishing like Big Nog! Without further ado, let's run it all back with a Full Review!
Let's start with what Santa gave us for a Main Event; Featherweights Gurney Halleck and Kano Hokichi. So much talent in these 145 frames, yet both came in to this fight looking for a Christmas Miracle in order to turn their careers around. I actually gave Hokichi the edge in the standup and that seemed to be the case in the early goings as he came out aggressive with some carefully placed crisp kicks. However Halleck stood his ground, it was almost like pride was on the line as both men refused to back down to the other. Not sure if it was because of pressure or the body work of Halleck but Hokichi's gas tank seemed to empty quickly. The first four minutes of this fight may have felt like Championship rounds in Mexico City with the sheer volume these guys were putting out there...
It was halfway through the final minute of the first round before one of these men finally broke, it was only a matter of time after the pace these two set. Showcasing what proper Striking Defense looks like, Halleck sporting an injured leg n all, waited for an opening and pounced like a panther delivering the Knockout of the Night! And what a Knockout it was, a straight punch connecting perfectly on Hokichi's jaw and knocking him out cold...Wow! It's right back to the gym though for Halleck as he now meets Krejzi Kure at OFC 250: Glorious! As Joe Rogan would say; "It's going to be Fireworks!"
Our Co-Main Event in the Sold Out (Don't these people have families?) Hard Knocks arena featured Middleweights; Judge LaCrosse and Modus Ponens in what proved to be the Fight of the Night! I know it's Christmas and the giving season n all, but man, Ponens' Coaches really should have informed him this isn't a blood drive charity event. Or LaCrosse may have just revealed his darkest secret that he's actually a Vampire as he was clearly blood thirsty the entire first round. Once LaCrosse got the clinch, he threw his elbows like Jason's Machete. After getting Rocked n Dropped, Ponens did what he does best and brought the fight to the ground while he came to his senses. As the first round drew to a close, the crowd were on their feet applauding the action. 2nd Round saw Ponens go back to the wrasslin' and work some GNP. Hey, if it's not broken, don't fix it. One round a piece going in to the final frame. Less then a minute in and Judge LaCrosse concluded this horror film of a fight with the final killshot coming in the form of his Deadly Elbow. The Doctor had seen enough and so had we, who knows if Ponens will ever return for the sequel. Hey, What ever happened to stand alone films in the Horror genre?
Next up we've got two weathered Veterans who've seen everything this sport has to offer, Welterweights; Jay Hunter and Rab Rehab. Combining for more than 140 fights, I love when two Experienced Warriors come together for fights like this. Hunter was determined to Aim High Willis, repeatedly throwing Head Kicks like a cutout of his childhood bully had been pasted on Rehab's face. You can only block so face Kicks with your head before you go down and Ke$ha's yelling Timber. Earning the Co-Knockout of the Night, Hunter found an Extra 5k in his Stocking for the impressive performance.
Our last Award, Submission of the Night went to Cono McGregor, capturing the Victory by Kimura at the 4:59 mark of the first round. Cono now rides a 3 fight win streak for the first time in his career. Now in the final year of his 20's (make the most of 'em!) he may have just found his stride and identity in the fight game. It'll be interesting to see if he can carry this momentum moving forward, early talks are in place to have him take on newly recruited Knuckles OToole at OFC 250: Glorious!
