HFC 33 New Era (876856) Event Review

Foreword: This was the start of a new era for a young and upcoming 300k+ organization, and it lived up to the billing. Only 3 fights made it passed the first round, and one of those won fight of the night because it really could have went either way. The future is bright for Honour Fighting Championships. They boast a 99% approval rating among managers with fighters under contract, and as owner Henyrk Kuzbik says, "We have set our sights very high."     Nummer Fjorton vs Jason Taylor - 205 lbs In my preview of this fight I felt that Taylor had a considerable advantage in actual fight experience he would put to good, and I believe he did just that. Initially Taylor failed with a takedown attempt and got cut by a decent two punch combo from Fjornton, but it would only be a matter of time before Taylor landed a takedown. Once on the ground Fjornton just didn't have the skill or experience to ever improve his position. This lead to basically 4 minutes of unanswered ground and pound strikes from Taylor which brought about Fjornton's demise.  Prediction: Taylor TKO (Strikes) round 2.  Result: Taylor TKO (Strikes) 3:58 of round 1.        John Brown vs Gauthier Delsarte - 265+ lbs This would win the Fight of the Night Award. I was expecting a finish of some sort, but it was a full length fight with plenty of action. In round 1 both fighters came out swining for the fences. Delsarte, as he would do the entire fight, got the better of the exchanges, other than a 3 punch combo from Brown that cut him. Delsarte showed some promise winning the second round comfortably striking at range, and finally the third in and out of the clinch at will. Delsarte did all that could be expected of him at this age, and laid a solid foundation moving forward.  Prediction: Delsarte TKO (Strikes) round 1.  Result: Delsarte Unanimous Decision Fight of the Night Award       Yoshimasa Porter vs Ronald Dela Rosa - 135 lbs At the opening bell Dela Rosa came out chucking leather. He managed to find range and started landing effectively, but it would not last. Porter after taking some punishment in the initial seconds took it to the clinch. In the clinch he seemed to overpower Dela Rosa who could not manage to escape. Dela Rosa appeared to gas himself out from a combination of going all out early, and then struggling in the clinch. Eventually Porter landed a right hand that snapped Dela Rosa's neck and rocked his world. Dela Rosa seemed to recover, but Porter landed two overhand rights that put him on the floor which he immediately capitalized on by mounting him, and bombing until the ref stepped in to call it. Dela Rosa spoke after the fight saying, "Abby skibby ibby," which lead me to believe he could have the tendencies of a sore loser.  Prediction: Porter Unanimous Decision Result: Porter TKO (Strikes) 2:17 of round 1.       Gary Severn vs Willem Van Der Weegh - 265 lbs This was a shoot and sweep extravaganza. Severn landed the first takedown, and it seemed like he didn't have a plan in place for what to do once he did that. They rolled around a little with the crowd letting them know they were not particularly amused. Eventually Severn stood up only to have Van Der Weegh take him down. Van Der Weegh actually managed some top control and advanced to mount, but Severn would outmanuever him and escape. Closing in on the end of the first round Severn pulled guard on Van Der Weegh. This time Severn managed to sinch up a triangle as Van Der Weegh desperately tried to hold on in the closing seconds of the round. Severn had it locked up tight though, and Van Der Weegh fell unconscious. Incidentally, if you manage to perform the only submission of an event, you are likely to win the Submission of the Night Award. Prediction: Severn TKO (Strikes) round 2. Result: Severn Submission (Triangle) 4:56 of round 1. Submission of the Night Award       Kiyoshi Sakuraba vs Jimmy Logan - 170 lbs Logan came out looking like he wanted to trade punches. Sakuraba, as you would imagine, came out wanting a takedown. Logan found range. Sakuraba did not. Sakuraba knowing the fight was his on the ground did all he could to take it there but could never manage. Two minutes into the first Logan threw a brutal uppercut that fold Sakuraba up like a cheap suit. Logan then did what any self respecting mma fighter would do, and bombarded him with more strikes from mount to force the ref's hand.  Prediction: Sakuraba Submission (Armbar) round 2.  Result: Logan TKO (Strikes) 1:53 of round 1.        Alex Sims vs Venom Page - 185 lbs This was a fight with two young men that seem to have had fight plans that were on the conservative side. Throughout the fight it seemed like both fighters were reluctant to truly let their hands go. This lead to a fight that wasn't exactly a show stopper, but undoubtedly a learning experience for both fighters. Page dominated the first round throughout an extended feeling out period from both fighters. The second round was close but Sims actually staggered Page with a nice combo from the clinch to win it. In the third Sims went back to the clinch but Page managed to do just enough to win that round, and ultimately the fight.  Prediction: Sims Unanimous Decision. Result: Page Unanimous Decision.       Arthur Shawcross vs Michel Truffant - 155 lbs This fight started out slow in the first but both fighters gained momentum, and stepped up the pace as the fight wore on. Shawcross won the first and second round, easily out scoring Truffant. As the third round started and continued, it appeared that Shawcross was dominating and the fight was slipping quickly out of Trufannts grasp, but just at the end of the fight Truffant landed a nice shot that rocked Shawcross. Shawcross' corner tried to get him to hold on for the last seconds, but Truffant connected with a big overhand right that knocked Shawcross out cold. A clutch KO victory for the cardiac kid by the name of Truffant.  Prediction: Truffant TKO (Strikes) round 2.  Result: Truffant KO (Punch) 4:49 of round 3.        David Trudea vs Greg Landlaw - 170 lbs Landlaw being a brown belt in BJJ did everything in his power to take this fight to the mat. He could never achieve this though as Trudeau brilliantly sprawled and countered striked on all attempts. Things quickly escalated out of control for Landlaw who got caught with a quick right hand counter about two minutes into the first round. Landlaw threw out a half hearted attempt to keep Trudeau at range with a body kick, but got countered yet again with two monster hooks from Trudea that put him to sleep. Decisive victory for Trudea, and uncertainty for Landlaw.  Prediction: Trudea TKO (Strikes) round 1.  Result: Trudea KO (Strikes) 2:32 of round 1.  KO of the Night Award       Duan Daniels vs Patricius Satanae - 265 lbs Two 18 year old heavyweights came into this fight looking to start building a name for themselves. Starting out the fight these two came out banging. Daniels was tested early with numerous hard shots from Satanae, but he shrugged them off nicely. As the round progressed Satanae took the fight to the clinch, but Daniels landed a short tight uppercut that cut him. This was the first inicator that Daniels would be the better fighter on this occasion. The fight would end in that clinch. Daniels showed good strength and defense in the clinch, and started scoring at will. Eventually Daniels landed a good shot that rocked Satanae. With Satanae wobbled, Daniels popped a big right hand that laid him out. Daniels closed the deal with a series of strikes from mount.  Prediction: Satanae TKO (Strikes) round 1. Result: Daniels TKO (Strikes) 4:56 of round 1.        Snarf Reed vs Donal Brogue - 170 lbs Reed came out at the opening bell doing all he knew how to do....strike. He seemed to be moving with good speed, but Brogue is a seasoned veteran and used mind over matter in this contest. Reed connected with a good hook that cut Brogue early. About a minute into the round Brogue managed a takedown into Reed's guard. This was not a good place for a fighter with no apparent ground game to find himself. Brogue grounded and pounded on Reed who had no answer for the incoming onslaught. Sure Reed tried to advance but only opened himself up to be mounted, and later gave up his back. From Reed's back Brogue pounded with a couple big shots that had Reed covering up. The referee had no choice but to wave it off.  Prediction: Brogue TKO (Strikes) round 2.  Result: Brogue TKO (Strikes) 4:31 of round 1.      Conclusion:  With an recent influx of new fighters Honour Fighting Championships made a decision to downsize a little with this event. They moved to a slightly smaller venue. There are a lot of new fighters joining the ranks so there is some jockeying for position which explains why there was no title fight on this card. The future continues to look promising, though. I'm sure we will have some titles up for grabs in the near future. As always Honour is actively recruiting in all weight classes. Please contact Henryk Kuzbik with any questions about contracts. Thanks to all current managers and fighters within HFC for doing your respective parts, and thanks to all who took the time to read this review, as mind numbing as it may have been. Stay tuned for HFC 34 on January 14, 2017!
