Sydney FC 2: Dugan vs. Lard - Recap

If SFC 1 was a technical affair with more decisions than finishes, the second Sydney Fighting Championship card was a homage to the Just Bleed God, with six knockouts and eight finishes overall. Ringside doctors and cutmen had a busy night, we even wonder if there was enough vaseline and medication backstage to take care of all the wounded...

170 lbs - Dmitri Dravinski vs. Jack Rustern

In the first fight of the night, the wonderful boxer Rustern made a puzzling decision and took it to the ground within the first seconds of action, which would prove to be his undoing. Dravinski quickly reversed position and started working on submission attempts. He ended up on the bottom again after trying an ankle lock, but his active guard kept Rustern in trouble. Dravinski tried a triangle and finally an armbar, forcing a tap out with four seconds to go in the first round. No strikes were attempted in this contest from neither side.

155 lbs - Tyler Bate vs. Young Buck

Adding some distinct flavor to the night, after what turned out to be a TWGC match, SFC brought us an unofficial kickboxing bout, with both young men agreeing to keep it on the feet. Only 16 years old, Young Buck showed a solid chin and great warrior spirit, but the older, more experienced Tyler Bate - only 18 years old himself - was too much to handle, landing combos and soundly outstriking his underage opponent en route to an unanimous 30-27 scorecard. The teenagers won a well deserved Fight of the Night award for their efforts.

135 lbs - Kim Posible vs. Quincy Hanley

In a battle of two high level wrestlers, neither one was able to show their grappling skills, as Hanley wobbled Posible with a wild attack of punches right away, hitting body and head and finishing with a straight punch to the jaw with 42 seconds of fighting. It was Hanley's first career win after starting 0-2, and not surprisingly, Knockout of the Night. He was quick to call out the much heavier Tyler Bate in the aftermath of the fight.

135 lbs - Palaktingpuet Payakarakatong vs. Shair Khan

Two blue chip striking prospects facing off in a compelling matchup. Each man tried to get every advantage they could, exchanging clinch entries and exits, landing careful, non commital strikes and even attempting the odd surprise takedown attempt. Palaktingpuet came out on top with a nice display of well rounded skills, landing a takedown and working on subs after a scramble. With only 2:32 minutes, Khan was forced to tap out to a tight armbar, the Submission of the Night. Rumors are running that Palaktingpuet, at 3-0 to start his career, will get the shot for the first ever SFC BW title.

265 lbs - David Campbell vs. Tim Arlovski

A useless stand up fighter, Campbell took some punishment in the first moments of the fight, but he didn't take long to land a takedown, which spelled the end for Arlovski. Campbell quickly slipped to full mount and was perfect with his ground and pound, scoring a TKO with 3:55 minutes in the first round. If only "The Magician" works on his striking, he will be a force in SFC's HW division.

205 lbs - Bon Bones vs. Hulas Kanodia

Absolutely even matchup, but SFC 2's violent rampage wouldn't let it go to the scorecards. Both guys dealt punishment to each other with Kanodia having a slight edge in striking - which led Bones to a takedown attempt. He couldn't do much on the ground though, and the referee stood them up quickly. Bones still landed some hard kicks and even cut Kanodia with a partially landed high kick, but he seemed desperate after a few takedowns attempts kept failing. Kanodia smelled blood and connected with a series of powerful right hands, prompting the referee to step in.

205 lbs - Chuck Lesnar vs. Matt St. Pierre

A sizeable favorite, Lesnar dominated the first round, getting the better in all areas of the fight while St. Pierre only survived the round, getting beat up badly with dirty boxing in the final minute. It was only a matter of time. In the first seconds of the following round Lesnar dropped Matt "Push" St. Pierre with a vicious right hand and dived for the finish. He didn't waste time in the post fight interview, demanding a title shot from SFC owner Billy Deegan.

185 lbs - James Twinkle vs. Charles Vance

Another short, violent affair as Twinkle put his skill and experience advantage to use and tuned up his opponent with punches. Vance showcased a real solid chin, eating two huge uppercuts and a barrage of punches before going lights out with only one minute and half into the fight. It was an impressive outing from Twinkle and he could be trouble for anyone at SFC's MW division.

Co-Main Event - 145 lbs - Taulua Fautanua vs. Jouzee Alddo

The Co-Main Event was a real close fight, going the distance unlike the norm at SFC 2. Both of them high level grapplers, these fighters showed a little bit of everything. It was even going into the third round, when Alddo seemed to fade. Fautanua took him down and slipped into mount, spending the majority of the final frame on top scoring with sub attempts and measured ground and pound and securing the 29-28 win on all scorecards. Both guys figure to be around the top of SFC FW division.

Main Event - 205 lbs - Darcy Dugan vs. Larry Lard

It would have to be a KO to end such a violent night of fights, and it was up to the hard puncher Darcy Dugan to do the honors. He cut Lard's face open right at the opening moments after landing a good combination, and never stopped, landing brutal punches in the clinch and eventually overwhelming the overmatched Lard, who was helpless after two minutes and a half, eating non stop punches and only held up by the cage. Dugan even scramed abuse at the ref for such a late stoppage. Now 3-0 and armed with a nice blend of muay thai and wrestling, Dugan seems to be the man at 205 pounds at SFC.
