SM-Fight Liiga did not disappoint this past weekend, as the organization crowned its first champions ever in a historic event that took place at Hayashi's Lounge in Helsinki, Finland.
"We're extremely happy how it went down; it was a full sellout, and the fans were over the moon with the fights that were put on. That's the way to crown champions." Owner and GM Billy Talent said at the post-event press conference afterwards.
The fights did not disappoint, as the main event of the card saw Malig Hunt outlast challenger Miles O'Brien in a five round contest with a unanimous decision victory that made him the inaugural lightweight champion.
"Those guy brought it for this fight, but Hunt really impressed us. We think he has a very bright future with us." Talent said specifically about the fight.
Not to be outdone, the welterweight division put on a barn burner itself in the clinch and on the ground where Jake Shields finally put a dent in the loss column for Jay Read, handing him his first loss with a rear naked choike submission just two seconds before the bell in the fourth round.
"That wasn't a fight that's going to please the crasher and banger fans out there, but this was a great fight where both guys showed a lot of toughness. This one has the potential for a rematch all over it - realistically, Read never tapped, so we could see these two get after it again."
SMFL is scheduled to have their next event, Chretien vs. Nimitz, back at Hayashi's Lounge on February 11th. No question, after the success of this card, tickets will be scarce!
