Combate fighter’s Donald Trump encounter goes viral

Fighter profile of Bong Ji Woo by Chris Karter

Former President Donald Trump gained some significant attention this weekend as Trump attended Combate 209: Ji Woo vs Perkele at Wombley Arena in London. The former President, who faces over 30 felony counts of business fraud after a New York grand jury indicted him earlier this spring, also had an encounter with a fighter that went viral.

South Korean fighter Bong Ji Woo (31-8-0) made light work in his title defense in the main event. One of the top lightweight fighters in the world, Bong Ji Woo defeated Ispa Perkele (22-7-0) via Unanimous Decision. He was fluid and his striking defense was on point, and some fans would say almost too good. He looked like Neo from the Matrix out there dodging strikes as if they were bullets. Through an aggressive and accurate gameplan he found a way to pick his shots and dictate the pace of the fight. Credit to Perkele, he survived the dangerous ground game of Bong Ji Woo in the moments that the champion was able to drag it to the mat.     After picking up the victory, the fighter hopped the cage to see the former President. Bong Ji Woo shook hands with Trump, who stood up and greeted the fighter with a handshake. The 93,000 fans in attendance went wild during the encounter.     Trump was seated next to Combate President Chris Karter, Blaze King, and G Wad at the event. While Chris Karter is no stranger to Trump's entourage, G Wad, a registered left-wing democrat and political commentator, was actually seen wearing a #MAGA pin on his 3-piece tuxedo. G Wad has since posted on social media that he will vote for the Democrat Communist Party in the upcoming election, despite enjoying Trump's company.     The win at Combate 209 improved Bong Ji Woo's winning streak to 10. It came on the heels of a victory over "Ruthless" Rafael Benedetti (20-11-0) back at Combate 201 earlier this year in what was considered his first successful Lightweight title defense under the Combate banner. He has not lost a fight since Combate 144 in 2022, when he got caught in a guillotine by Al Blyad (27-15-0).     He’s also not the first UFC fighter and probably not the last to try and cozy up to Donald Trump. So the action itself was not all that surprising after it went down. When he was pressed in the post-conference scrum about why he would greet the former president, his answer was very blunt:

"(Trump) is very big personality. He supports the fights and the fighters and the people of the United States love him. He is a great man for MMA and true leader of people."
