AD58: Black Eyed Knees preview

Event Preview: AD58: Black Eyed Knees
Aggressive Damage
2012-09-09, Montreal, The Expo
Author:Cause McDubree

The serious fight fanatics will be flocking to the Expo tonight to take in what’s guaranteed to be another compelling card brought to you by Aggressive Damage, Montreal. We may have slipped to #2 since our last event brought us to the top but we have every intention of continuing to provide stiff competition for the established orgs who've ruled the roost here in Canada for years now.

Headlining this dynamic dust-up is a Welterweight title affair between current Champ, Tony Parts (17-6) and former belt holder, Pablo Santos (20-12), who's indicated he has every intention of reclaiming his post as the baddest 170 lb'er in the fold. Since losing the title in a shocker to the unassuming Per Saukko, Santos has strung together a couple of impressive wins, with his submission over the ultra popular Ted Grant being a big feather in his cap. Tony Parts may have lost to Grant shortly after signing on with us but has steamrolled every other fighter he's faced since, including Saukko for the title and let it be known at a recent press conference he believes Santos can't hang with his advanced skill set. This one has all the makings of Fight of the Night and possibly year, jacking up our fans' expectations through the roof!

Setting the table for that brutal beauty is a HW eliminator between two up & comers from Europe who both guaranteed themselves Knock out of the Night bonuses at AD58. Vitali Klitschko (12-4) and Killian McDougle (7-2) are not friends, as we witnessed in their previous bout when they refused to acknowledge each other after McDougle out worked him in the clinch to earn a decision victory. Klitschko will either have to keep his distance this time around or formulate a better gameplan when they lock up because it was blatantly apparent his clinchwork was not on McDougle's level. As the only fighter the burly Irishman has not KO'd amongst his 7 wins, McDougle's had his angry face on since the rematch was signed. A number of intrepid pundits are saying this one's gonna have more fireworks than the 4th of July in Boston and we tend to agree with that assessment, no judges required this time.

Superheavyweights Johnny Knox (20-12) and Slade Wilson (20-10) have both seen some ups and downs since participating in our Openweight Grand Prix, with Wilson seeing more success but not enough to term his opponent easy pickens. On the contrary, we see Knox giving him all he can handle and providing one of Slade's toughest tests to date. With 27 finishes between them, it leaves us believing we’ll witness either a KO from Knox or submission from the blackbelted Wilson should he be able to get this one to the mat.  We hear Carly Simon's Anticipation as the theme song leading up to this ubermatchup.

Previous to that we’ll get to see another HW eliminator between two cagey veterans in Fresh Crimson (18-19) and Tone Cross (17-16). Both guys show up to finish, with only 5 of their 35 combined wins coming via decision and have won over many fans as a result, myself included. Currently heading in opposite directions, with Crimson having dropped his last couple and Cross winning the previous 2, this one packs more don't blink intrigue than a NASA probe's fly by the rings of Saturn.

Moving down to our action packed Lightweight division, John Connor (23-12) tries to knudge his way towards another title shot at the expense of all-rounder, Tommy Avila (17-6-2). Having won one/lost one since being KO’d by the seemingly indomitable David Cross, this could be Connor’s best chance to get back in the hunt. Avilla’s taken on all comers since his debut with us (a KO loss to Connor) but continues to showcase his martial talents while building momentum.

The bottom half of the card sees veteran HW and power puncher, Frank Sigurdsson (16-9) tries to gain some traction in our HW division by taking out Chris Vaughn (10-10), who’s had a rough ride with us but seems completely unfazed by the negative results, only determined to improve so he can start kicking ass. Moving down a division, it’s a BJJ vs. MT battle as Brazilian Bobby (5-5) takes on Jimmy Dunham (5-3), with no need for us to tell you who’ll be looking for the submissions. Back up to HW just prior for Maximus M. (8-1) vrs. Ivan D. (1-0), which appears to be a massive mismatch based on records but not on creation dates; if Ivan’s put all that extra training time to good use and possesses solid hiddens, we might be in for a surprise. Kicking off this stupendous night of coinflips, we have two Welterweight tilts, starting with longtime AD stalwart Gunmetal Grey (18-17-1) facing the streaky Steve Fighter (16-9-1), who’s currently lost 4 after winning 4. Those in the know are scratching their heads over who’s going to come out on top here and with two respected veteran presences in Grey and Fighter, this one’s gonna pack ‘em in early. Proceeding this highly anticipated bout we get Finnish fighter Kalle Anka (5-3) who showed very well with us until stepping up in competition, staring down Chris Cole (1-2), who’s still a spring chicken who may need some more seasoning before he’s able to best the likes of Anka.

Yeeehaw, this one’s gonna be buzzin’ like a bandsaw- so getcher tickets, poutine and beer, we’ll be seein’ you all at the Expo tonight!!  For those wondering where the predictions are, head on over to A Good Cause to find out who’s the favourites (we put our money where our mouth is) and slap down some cash on the ones we got wrong.

Last but not least, our certain to be spectacular Featherweight Grand Prix’s glass is approaching half full so if you have a pending FA who would be ready to fight for us on September 29th, be sure and pm the headzup so we can bring him on board. Thanks to all for your consistent efforts and until next time- keep it Aggressive!
