Big Papi Goes Deep

Fighter profile of Adrian Ortiz by Sixty Nine

As Adrian Ortiz stepped into the cage against Han Chee, he felt a slight bit of pressure. He'd never been one to let it get to him, but then again, he'd always been on top. Not this time though. When he joined the fight island, he figured it would be a way to grab some quick cash and get some top orgs to recognize him. The Dominican native has trained Muay Thai and wrestling for 12 years now, and is skilled in the octagon.

He figured he would win it all. But in his first fight, he was proven wrong. Against the powerful Farooq Rahim, he didn't do well on his feet like he usually did, he looked sluggish and unprepared, without a gameplan. Within a minute he had fallen flat on his face while trying to pull guard, then soon after that taken down and promptly beat the shit out of for 1 and a half minutes. The final blow was hard, but Ortiz didn't remember afterward. That's why Ortiz felt some pressure going into the Chee fight. He couldn't lose again.

But he did poorly that fight too, stupidly clinching and trying to pull guard, when he really should have gone for the KO on the feet. After that disastrous fight, he went to his coach and agent, Sixty Nine, and informed him that they would be training 24/7 up to his next fight against Wu Hu. He only had 4 fights in the league, and had already wasted one. He couldn't afford to lose again. So he trained, working harder and harder until the day of the fight came.

Despite all his tiring work, he felt better than ever going into the fight. He fought better than ever too. Hu came out trying to do the thing that disgusted Ortiz. Takedowns. Fortunately, he stuffed them all and slapped (literally) the crap out of Hu. But Hu finally succeeded with a takedown, and it wasn't looking good for Big Papi. Fortunately, Hu decided to take a breather and the ref stood them up, where Ortiz seized the moment and knocked out Hu. A first round finish, Big Papi was still alive.

He was feeling great, until Chick Hamland came along and took him down and beat him up. Going into his last chance to make playoffs, he needed a first round finish against the lethal kicker Simon Maynard. Luckily for Ortiz, he wasn't able to showcase those kicks in their fight. Maynard threw some sloppy looking kickboxing shots but really didn't seem like he could get anything going, and as he missed with a left, Ortiz combo'd him and knocked him down, then beat him to a pulp until the ref saved him. He had clinched playoffs, but it wasn't over yet.

He had a non-league fight scheduled with Francis Brooks, one of the top dogs in the division. Brooks may have hoped it was a warm up for playoffs, but Ortiz took it seriously. It payed off when Big Papi's massive uppercut landed square on Brook's chin, and Ortiz won again.

Then, for his playoff matchup, what do you know! A rematch with the guy he just beat! This time though, Brooks was ready, right? No, actually, it just seemed like Ortiz got better, having an even swifter KO in the first round. This time a left hook that devastated Brooks, and probably gave him some Antonio Brown level CTE.

Big Papi now faces Brennan Calhoun in the second round of the playoffs, and looks to repeat his success there. Calhoun is a gnp fighter, and Ortiz hates that, so we'll see if Ortiz' rage and fury win, or Calhoun's dirty fighting comes out on top. All I know is be there for the fireworks at Hayashi's on the 21st! It should be a great show!
