Kyros Sisyphus after his QFC 15 Tournament win

Fighter profile of Kyros Sisyphus by Luan Dovik

This profile was made after Kyros became a QFC Tournament champion. Right now he became the Omnislash Gauntlet champion and we'll have an interview with him.

There was a time when Kyros Sisyphus just trained wrestling in Athens as a hobby. The greek was only 5 years old when he started and soon it became a passion. He kept training until he met the Brazilian jiu jitsu and with 9 years old , he began training the noble art. It´s been 9 years since then and he moved to Brazil to pursue a career as a mma fighter. He’s amateur record is of 6-1 with the lone defeat being his first fight and a split decision lost that had some controversy on it.

With only 18 years old, Kyros wants to develop as much as he can and he found in GSF Team,  a family to support him, being so far from home. “It was a difficult time when I came to Rio. I had to work hard a lot and it took some time to be confortable with the new guys at the team, but I feel a lot better now and ready to develop even more”. A few days ago, the golden opportunity appeared: a QFC 170 pound tournament in Rio de Janeiro. Kyros’s been in Rio for 4 months and decided to jump on the opportunity. And he made the most of it.

“I definetly tought that I would take a lot of heart to take this. There were some tough dudes there, man! I had no problem with the first 2 fights. I was able to take the guys down and work my way to the submission. But the semifinal was tough. That took a lot out of me.”

Cosmo Starstryder was the next opponent on his line. And he almost took the greek out of the tournament. With 2 knockdowns, everything seemed lost to Kyros, but he made out of it in impressive fashion. “You know, I was expecting to receive bombs to my chin in this fight, but I had the feeling that I could absorb them well. I was doing it, but his hands connected pretty well to my face. Knocked me once.. then when I was starting to recover, knocked me again… That time I was on wobbly legs and can´t remember very well.. I just remember when I grabbed him and took him down. I took some seconds to regain my senses and I saw the chance to get an arm triangle. It worked and I was in the finals… No way to describe the feeling. It was great!”

The finals were ahead of him and another opponent tried to take his dream away: Simon Plant. Plant is a kid that has a lot of wrestling credentials in his high school and denied a great opportunity in college to try a mma career. “Yeah, I knew that he had only ground strength, so he would go to the ground, deal with submissions and try to control me and maybe KO me with ground and pound. My game plan was to let the fight hit the mat and work my submissions. He went for the takedown and I just followed him to the mat. He was very blind there and I managed to get the triangle. He fought hard, but didn´t tap… No other way to end it so he slept”.

And now with the tournament title on his waist, he wants bigger things. “I want to go back to the gym and train. I’m not sure about staying at welterweight, but I will keep training hard. I’ll have a chance to enjoy more quality training right now with the money I got. I’m thinking about entering and org by the end of August or maybe earlier... Then I’ll try to reach another dream: become a world champion.”
