HERO 34: Li vs Kasavanov

Prelims

Lightweight Division:  Randy West vs Sven Hjernson

The majority of this fight was spent on the feet, and that suited Randy West just fine. He was able to gwet through Hjernson's defenses enough to rack up the rounds by a decisive margin. Hjernson tried as hard as he could to get the fight to the mat, but it wasn't enough. Result: West by unanimous decision

Bantamweight Division: Edwin Salvadore vs Matti Teitsi

Teitsi connected with every punch that he threw and stuffed every takedown that Salvadore threw at him. With execution like that, it doesn't take long to finish things. Less than a minute into this one, Salvadore was cracked by a spinning back fist that left him staring at the rafters. Result: Teitsi by 1st round KO (Strikes)

Heavyweight Division: Warmonger Sion vs Markus Heinola

This one was over even faster than the last one. Heinola knocked Sion down with a massive head kick, then motioned for him to get back to his feet so that he could do it one more time. It was more than Sion could handle and he spent the rest of the night seeing stars. Result: Heinola by 1st round KO (Head Kick)

Lightweight Division: Mikko Neva vs Joonas Muikku

Neva went hard for the takedowns from the sound of the bell, but his predictable game plan was defended by Muikku. Joonas let Neva wear himself out, then picked him apart with his boxing. The ref stepped in to save a bloody Neva midway through the opening frame. Result: Muikku by 1st round TKO (Strikes)

Welterweight Division: Jake Shields vs Kaheli Sonni

Jake Shields showed strong striking defense in this one. He limited the damage from Sonni's superior striking, then got the fight into his wheelhouse with a takedown. He worked time after time for a kimura that he couldn't finish, even losing top position. However, from the bottom, he grabbed an arm and refused to let go. Result: Shields by 1st round submission (Armbar)

Main Card

Heavyweight Division: Richard Burger vs Ken Hall

Hall was a perfect four for four in takedowns. On the ground, Burger was able to stand up after getting taken down, but absorbed a lot of punishment doing so. Eventually, the ground and pound became too much for him to bear and he tapped out to strikes early in the second round. Result: Hall by 2nd round submission (Strikes)

Heavyweight Division: Roddy Piper vs Alan Fei Hong

Things were looking good for Piper when he got an early takedown, but Hong was able to get back to his feet quickly. Once standing, Hong clinched up and delivered massive elbows that left Piper a bloody mess. The doctor called this one off whn the blood made it so that Piper couldn't see. Result: Hong by 1st round TKO (Cut)

Lightweight Division: Maarten Van Der Moot vs Igor Yakovchenko

Neither man even considered a takedown in this brawl. They went toe to toe and swung away. While Yakovchenko managed to get some solid shots in, it was outweighed by the consistent pounding delivered by Van Der Moot. Maarten was well up on the cards but didn't let up, getting the finish to cement his victory. Result: Van Der Moot by 3rd round TKO (Strikes)

Co-Main Event

HERO Welterweight Championship: Rauta Naama vs Andrzej Workowski

Naama opened the first round with some crisp and effective boxing. Workowski knew he couldn't win without a takedown and worked hard to get one. On his ninth attempt, he finally got the fight to the ground. Workowski spent over two minutes working on a kimura, and the hard work paid off with championship gold. Result: Workowski by 1st round submission (Kimura)

Main Event

HERO Lightweight Championship: Wai Man Li vs Dimitri Kasavanov

The last time these two fought, Kasavanov dominated. This time, however, Li got the upper hand. While each round was relatively close, Li landed more strikes, got more takedowns, and outperformed on the mat. The judges were in agreement about who the winner was. Result: Li by unanimous decision

Post Fight Press Conference

AJ Nex congratulated Li for defending his crown and Workowski on winning the belt in his HERO debut. This card broke yet another HERO record for event rating, showing that HERO is continuing to improve on its already stellar cards.

It was announced that former champion Maarten Van Der Moot earned a rematch with Li with his impressive win over Igor Yakovchenko

AJ Nex ended the night by handing out the night's bonus awards:

KO of the Night: Markus Heinola
