MELTON Sr vs VENTURA

It takes some serious reminiscing to think of a rivalry as heated, and as bitter, as the one INY and MMA fans will finally get to see October 10th, at Hayashi’s Lounge in New York, NY where INY’s Fight Night XXV Melton vs Ventura will go down . There’s been so much smack-talk, pissing on trees, and just flat out bad blood between both of these fighters and their managers, that even die-hard INY followers have a hard time remembering how it actually all started, and who really threw the first volley? So let’s take a look at the fighters, their managers, and the story behind this huge MMA orgasm.

Manager Mike Melton is somewhat of a living legend within the Immortals New York organization. Not to be confused with T. Roy (Mike Meltons son and a decorated MMA Tycoon veteran himself), Melton sports a current record of 105-34-1, and an overall record of 168-75-2. He currently manages several world class fighters including 12-2 Vladimir Van Kirland ( 2 time INY 155lbs Champion w/ 4 title defenses), 8-2 Matt Youngblood (2 time 180 lbs NAF Champion, and top contender for INY’s 205 lbs belt), 9-1 Roger De La Hoya (former ACME- FC 265lbs Champion), and 16-3 Carl Mills (former 265lbs FCB, Valhalla, and NAF Champion), along with a string of other notable fighters. This Wednesday, Melton will walk into the ring with one of his most prized fighters, 8-2 Mike Melton Sr , INY’s current 185lbs Champion. Like most of Melton’s fighters, Sr is known to be a cardio franken-monster with more staying power than Jenna Jameson at all all-night south-of- the- border gang bang (sorry Tito…but it is what it is..you knew going in!!!) His reputation for being a cerebral- assassin, out-thinking and outlasting his opponents on the mat, rivals that of UFC’s bjj godfather, Royce Gracie. Beaten only twice, both times by fellow INY 185lbs’er Archie Fallon, Sr will tonight face one of his most outspoken and possibly toughest challenges in one very loud, some say obnoxious, 5-0 Anthony Ventura.

Ventura , managed by Alexi Zaitev, made his INY debut at INY 32, where the underdog defeated a superior ground fighter in 2-0 Taco Bueno. It was during this fight that INY fans were put on notice that Ventura may possibly be one of those fighters who has the ability , or maybe the heart, to somewhat amplify his boxing and MT skills, allowing him to stay standing with a superior ground fighter and “win” the fight. Almost never at a loss for words, Ventura would probably call his performance against Bueno “masterful”. But was it? Was it a god-like debut, or was it just “lucky”? Was it poor planning or poor preparation on the part of Bueno, or was it much more? Ventura’s manager, Alexi Zaitev is currently 205-90-4, with an over-all record of 220-152-3 (5NC), so it’s easy to see that Ventura’s management is definitely no slouch!!! Zaitev represents fighters such as 22-10 Yrjo Jarvinen (former RFC 265lbs Champion), 9-1 Roger Freedman ( Current TFC 265lbs Champion), 18-8 Sergei Kourdakov (formerRMFC 135lbs Champion), and various other impressive fighters. Zaitev came across Ventura as a 20 yr old “free agent”, having already been dropped by 2 or 3 managers who didn’t quite know what to do with him or how to work with him. Zaitev say’s he had a feeling about Ventura, so he gave it a shot, and the rest is history in the making as Ventura quickly rolled to win all 5 of his professional fights thereafter.

Shortly after INY 32 and the Bueno fight, “Dean Holliday’s Top 5 (September 2012 Rankings)” came out on INY Smack Talk. Ventura was publicly incensed that his name was only an “honorable mention”. It was argued by Holliday and other INY critics, that even if Ventura won the Bueno fight handily (which he had actually lost the last round on all cards), can you beat a 2-0 fighter, then expect an org to bow down and give you a Top 5 ranking or more miraculously a shot at the belt? Well, in response, Ventura stifled the critics by publicly issuing a challenge on INY’s smack-thread to anyone and everyone within the INY ranks , promising to finish any challenger in Ventura fashion? Quote “Anthony Ventura needs another lamb to slaughter, will take on anyone in Immortals, anytime, any place anywhere “ Unquote. It didn’t take long before a confident Mike Melton responded to Ventura’s non-stop boasting and called the newcomer Ventura out. Quote “I can’t wait to send this big mouth packing to FA list with his tail between his legs “, unquote. And so it began.....

The bantering went back and forth, with each fighter and manager boistering his case, their predictions, their plans, etc…like 2 rival inmates eager to shank the shit out of each other for extra mash potatoes. The verbal barrage went back and forth with Ventura proclaiming he had beaten fighters superior to Melton, and that Melton would have problems taking Ventura down, and even if Melton were lucky enough to do so, he wouldn’t be able to do anything once on the ground. Ventura promised a “referee stand-up” followed by a promt beating. Melton called Ventura on his claim, publicly offering a $10,000 bet with Peel Steel’s bookie agent. In a surprise move, (and a PR managers 12 ounce wet dream ) Ventura one-upped Melton by issuing a $25,000 personal bet with Melton that Ventura would beat Melton Sr. Not to be out-done, Melton ( in what some say was a stretch) not only accepted the bet, but Melton promised an early KO as part of the bet !!!! So…the stage has been set, FN XXV is only days away, and INY members sit and hold their breath.

Melton is a long time pillar of INY. He and son / manager T. Roy are what some would say “gatekeepers” to several of INY’s most coveted belts. If you wanna be the man, you’ve got to go through the Meltons! While we are familiar with epic battles between the Meltons and managers like Jolon William, Jon Boogi, Peel Steel, Brunno Falcone, Don King, Shane Wellman, etc... The thought of an INY belt going to relative new-comers to INY, can / may be a bit un-settling to it’s long-time faithful (not to mention the cause for inner turbulence as in the Steel – Falcone dispute). So this fight represents much more than just another title match for INY faithful, it can actually take the form of loyalist vs interloper, respected vs disrespectful, good vs bad, or hero vs villain. With Shane Wellman churning up chaos and birthing an NWO-style take-over, top managers such as Janne Finland defeating a once unbeatable Styles, and other managers such as Dead Disney turning their attentions to the INY org, Melton represents the last bastion of what long time INY members know as “normal”. Thus, Melton has the INY world on his shoulders, he has everything to lose while Ventura has everything to gain.

When asked, my thoughts are this. Melton Sr has had 10 fights, and only the first and last fights were wins by “TKO or KO”. Ventura has had 5 fights, with only 3 of the wins coming via “TKO or KO” and to far less fighters than Melton Sr. Ventura also has the problem of dropping not 1, but 2 weight classes over his career. Let’s not forget his tall frame. Will the weight loss, versus Ventura’s height, effect his strength and takedown defense? Will this make Ventura more susceptible to a KO? Personally, I see Melton taking some punishment, but eventually dragging Ventura to the mat and keeping him there. You see, I don’t think Melton really cares about the KO, I believe it to be a bluff , attempting to lure Ventura into training for the wrong counters. I think Melton would much rather have the win either way. Sure, he won’t be able to boast about a KO, but he can always verbally fall back on the win because well, a win is a win and it screams, “Your MY bitch, ya bitch”!!!!!! Melton is superior in boxing, wrestling, and bjj . Ventura however, is dominant, and has shown his MT to be quite nasty. Thus, the smart money says Melton on the ground by sub or decision. If Melton in fact intends to stand up with Ventura and Ventura can clinch and launch his nuclear MT arsenal, Melton could be in trouble. One thing is for sure, this bomb is set to go off in 4 short days!!!! Who do you have?

This is Dean Holliday, and I’ll see YOU ate INY FN XXX: Melton vs Ventura!!!!!
