The genesis of a new era: Gaius Arabi.

Fighter profile of Gaius Arabi by Luan Dovik

Gaius Arabi was always into fights. He started training to defend himself from bullies at school and it got to a point where he choked out one of his colleagues that was trying to punch him. He got the respect he deserved in those times, but he decided he wanted to do more with those skills. He began training with the GSF Team to become a MMA fighter. He continue to develop his high level BJJ with a lot of stand-up and he got to a point where he was about to start his career. He took some fights in the local QFC and made a 3-0 record for himself. He decided that after a little while he would take on a fight at a big organization and he did so in the Omnislash Gauntlet 60½: Independence Sway. He fought Akumi Sadoro and after a tough beginning, he got a kneebar and a win. He then decided to train a lot to come back there. It a while and finally at OG OG 74: Friday Night Lights Out he got Sinkaram Hamzah into a triangle choke that was impossible to escape.

His main goal was to reach his title, specially after the gym already had greek standout Kyros Sysyphus as OG ‘s 170lbs champion and other champions in other organizations. He got the call to face the current king Leonardo Laiola at OG 77: Edward Scissorkicks. The fight was a classic striker x grappler matchup. Arabi did have good skills when it came to his boxing, but Laiola was much stronger there and it was simply a question of who was going to impose his will first: Laiola with a KO or Arabi with a submission? The answer came after 04:47 of fighting in the first round, as Arabi caught the champion with an incredible armbar and made him tap, to become the newest lightweight champion. After the fight, he had some declarations to make: “This is what I've worked for and now I'll give my best to remain the OG lightweight champion. I'm sure that no one will defeat me, because this is a new era. It is the genesis of my era and I'm here to make history by beating Manella's record. You can count on that! WORLD CHAMPION, MY FRIENDS!”

Later at the post-fight press conference, a relaxed and happy Arabi answered some questions about his future and what he thought about the fight. “Laiola definitely came hard with those shots and I knew I had to absorb them and try to hit him with something to set the takedown. I got the opportunity and I knew that once we where in my land, I was going to submit him. And I did it.”

About who he wanted next, he was quick to answer: “I don’t get to chose it right now. As I said, I want to beat all the record that the great Sal Manella had here. I’m ready for it and I’ll prove it to all of you.” Right after the question, Thor Thorsen – the OG President – told the press that the next fight was booked to OG 81: Shooting Star Wars and it was going to be against Spud Spud, who’s in a 2 fight win-streak. He’s only defeat came at the title fight for the vacant belt against Laiola. Arabi also gave his thoughts about it: “He seems to be a good opponent, but he was already defeated by Laiola, the man I took the title from. I see him failing again to win the title in another submission display by myself. I'm going back to the gym, improve all my skills and then come back to another great fight. I hope to correspond to my words. Thank you.”
