PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kai Kona (ranked 906 p4p, 1348 weight class) and Wulfgang Bleak (ranked 116 p4p, 172 weight class). Kona kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is A Warriors Call. Bleak has chosen Du Hast - Rammstein as his entrance music. Kai Kona has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kai Kona!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Wulfgang Bleak!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Bruno Lombardi and John Kavanagh.

A decent looking body kick lands there for Kona.
Kona has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Far-Q Fight Club in the buildup to the fight.

Kona throws a series of punches but Bleak moves out of range.
Bleak will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Kona enables Bleak to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Kona manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Bleak working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

Kona wants to stand and escape but Bleak is having none of it.
Kona utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Bleak throws a strike but Kona rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.


Bleak has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kona can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Bleak escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kona gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Kona got a little sloppy there for a moment and Bleak has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Kona has managed to get both his arms back between Bleak's legs - danger averted.
Bleak wants to sweep here but Kona controlling him for the moment.

Bleak is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Kona is aware though and is defending well.

Bleak is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Kona wants to pass the guard but Bleak is keeping the position.

Bleak changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Kona throws a hook but Bleak blocks it.
Bleak shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

and Bleak takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Bleak ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kona moves away.
Bleak doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Wulfgang Bleak seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bleak slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Bleak is actively looking for submissions here but good counter grappling here from Kona as he works his way to full guard.

That was a close round but I would say that Kai Kona will probably get the nod.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Kona is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Bleak.

Bleak tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Kona defends well and Bleak ends up having to push Kona into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Kona throws a head kick that half lands.

Kona fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Bleak looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Bleak takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Kona closes the distance and lands a vicious right hand that drops Bleak! Kona dives in looking to finish! Bleak is still trying to defend himself but he's taking too many shots and the referee has no choice but to stop the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:22 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Kai Kona!

Wulfgang Bleak spoke after the fight, saying 'I don't mind the pain, it helps remember the lesson. Great job by my opponent, he earned it. But I will be back!'.
