PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kruger Kongo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ray Rice (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kruger Kongo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ray Rice!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Eddie Farnsworth and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rice is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Rice throws a leg kick but Kongo sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Rice missing with a left hand there. Kongo was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Rice tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Rice misses with a body kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kongo takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Rice looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Kongo will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

and Rice counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Kongo thinking.
Kongo avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
A head kick misses from Rice.
Rice tries for a takedown but Kongo sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Rice throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Kongo counters with a takedown into side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The ground and pound from Kongo seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Kongo working away.
Rice really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kongo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Kongo working the strikes but Rice uses the opportunity to regain half guard.
Kongo thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Kongo not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Kongo seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Rice does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Rice throws a leg kick
and Kongo counters with an inside leg kick.
Rice thows a leg kick but Kongo checks it
and Kongo counters with a solid body kick.
Kongo fails to land with a series of punches.

Kongo swats away the attempt to clinch by Rice.
A head kick by Rice misses
and Kongo counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Rice scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Kongo wants to control but Rice postures up.
Kongo is looking to regain half guard here but Rice keeps moving and retains side control.
Kongo wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Rice is working Kongo over with some ground and pound from side control.
Kongo has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Kongo tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Kongo sneaks back into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rice is looking to advance position but Kongo won't allow it.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Kongo with a poor takedown

and Rice counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Kongo!
Rice prevents Kongo from getting the reversal.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Ray Rice will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Rice tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Kongo counters with a single leg into guard. Rice didn't expect that.
Kongo is looking to work some ground and pound but Rice has wrist control.

Kongo drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Rice dives on top into guard.
Rice scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Rice prevents Kongo from getting back to his feet.
Kongo wants to sweep here but Rice controlling him for the moment.

Rice looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Rice throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Kongo decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Rice's guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Rice is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kongo working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Kongo thows a big elbow that misses.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Rice can do anything to dispel that myth.
Kongo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Rice swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kongo distracts Rice with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Kongo wants to stand but Rice has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Kruger Kongo overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Kongo slips nicely into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kongo is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Rice trying to control but Kongo postures up.
Kongo is trying to control the action in half guard but Rice is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Kongo connects with a nice short shot to Rice's temple.
Rice wants to control but Kongo is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Rice looks like he's trying to stand up.
Kongo throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Kongo is trying to work for a kimura but Rice is defending well.
Rice moves into full guard.
Rice tries to strike from the bottom.
Kongo trying to control but Rice is working from the bottom.
Rice is trying to keep Kongo in close.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Rice closes the distance but Kongo moves to the side

and Kongo counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Rice's guard now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kruger Kongo dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Rice swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Kongo counters with a big head kick but Rice shrugs it off.
Kongo lands with a kick to the temple. Rice shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
The fight stays on the outside here - Rice looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Rice wants to clinch

and Kongo counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Rice's guard now.
Kongo trying to control the position from guard on top but Rice is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kongo looking to sit in guard and control but Rice gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Rice is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Kongo is trying to control the position but Rice postures up.
Kongo bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Rice's guard.
Kongo trying to control the position from guard on top but Rice is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kongo with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Kongo passes Rice's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Rice controlling the position for now.
Rice pushes Kongo off looking to stand but Kongo dives back in and keeps control.

Kongo trying to control from half guard but Rice is working away.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kongo sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Rice defending well though.
Kongo not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Kongo is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kongo throws a strike but Rice avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Kongo is fighting to break Rice's control of his arms but Rice is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Kongo throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kongo works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Kongo has decided to stand back up but his arm is trapped. Whilst he's worrying about his arm, Rice works to full guard.
Rice is adopting a defensive guard.

Rice wants to sweep but no luck.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Kongo takes a decent strike to the side of the head.
Kongo trying to control the position from guard on top but Rice is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Rice throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Kongo.

Rice decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kruger Kongo showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Kongo has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
