Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Shin Otami (ranked 3786 p4p, 2378 weight class) and Jonathan Hong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jonathan Hong told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shin Otami! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 9 - 19 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jonathan Hong! The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Taro Takaoka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Otami instigates a clinch. Hong looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Hong tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Hong misses with a hook from the clinch. Otami lands an elbow that stopped Hong in his tracks for a moment.
It looks like Jonathan Hong has been cut. Otami is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Shin Otami seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Otami closes this distance looking for a takedown but Hong circles away. And an attempted straight right on the counter from Hong! But no joy. Otami rushes Hong and presses him up against the cage. Otami has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Hong after a bit of a struggle. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hong working aggressively here.

That's one minute gone in the round. Otami tries for a takedown but Hong circles away easily and Hong counters with a left and a right that stings Otami. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shin Otami. That's going to take a lot out of him. Otami tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Hong paws at him with a jab and circles away. Hong swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made. Otami dives in and grabs Hong's left leg, looking for a takedown. Hong pushes down on Otami's head and hops out. Otami misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Hong has tried to improve his agility in the runup to this fight. Otami misses with a takedown attempt - Hong sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Otami throws a right and a left that both miss. Hong swats away the attempt to clinch by Otami. Hong looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it. Hong swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Otami tries to clinch up. As Otami backs off Hong throws a huge counter combo but Otami manages to avoid it all. Otami throws a head kick but Hong moves out of range.
Hong lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected. Otami tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Hong manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. It seemed like Hong was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Otami fails to land the takedown.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hong avoids the head kick by Otami.
Hong will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Otami darts in and clinches Hong up against the cage. Otami jumps guard.
Otami pulls Hong in close to his closed guard and prevents Hong from doing any damage or advancing position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Otami is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Otami works his way into full mount! Otami working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. Otami content just to control the position here. Otami punching from mount but Hong doing a good job of avoiding damage. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Hong's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hong can do anything to dispel that myth. Otami throws some wild stikes that Hong manages to avoid easily.

Shin Otami dominated that round. The cut man is working on Jonathan Hong's cut. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Otami darts in trying to clinch and Hong counters with a three punch combo that has Otami backing up. Otami nods at Hong to acknowledge the strikes. Otami really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Otami is trying hard to land a takedown here. Hong sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. It seemed like Hong was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Otami misses with a series of wild punches.

It will also be interesting to see what tactics Hong uses from the top position. Otami has his hands on Hong's head, controlling the position. Hong trying to stand up but can't free himself from Otami's guard. Otami might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Otami throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Otami has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Hong has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Hong got a little sloppy there for a moment and Otami has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hong has managed to get both his arms back between Otami's legs - danger averted. Hong gets to his feet. Otami looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Otami has a takedown stuffed. Despite the aggression on Hong's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards. Otami shoots in for a takedown but Hong shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Otami closes the distance and clinches up with Hong, looking for a takedown. Otami pushes Hong against the cage but Hong circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Otami swings widly with a right hand
and Otami takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Otami tries to clinch but Hong is having none of it. Otami is trying hard to land a takedown here. Hong sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shin Otami. That's going to take a lot out of him. It connects and Hong has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Otami tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Hong defends well and Otami ends up having to push Hong into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. It seemed like Hong was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Otami tries to stall but Hong uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Hong misses with a punch on the inside.

Otami jumps guard but Hong turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing. Hong swings wildly with an uppercut but Otami uses good head movement to avoid it. Otami trying to control the position but instead, Hong has worked for underhooks and has pushed Otami into the cage. Hong tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Hong working aggressively here.
Otami is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Hong is defending well. Otami blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Otami breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Otami closes the distance and clinches. Otami lands a glancing elbow in the clinch. Otami looking to slow down the pace here. Hong lands a right hand. Otami decides to pull guard. Hong tries to stand but Otami is controlling from the bottom. Hong wants to stand and escape but instead Otami has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard. Hong is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Otami is controlling him. Hong really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Otami. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Otami is standing up over Hong. Hong looks to escape but Otami dives into side control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Hong is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Otami asserts his dominance and retains side control. Otami misses with the ground and pound. Hong bucks up and tries to throw Otami off but instead Otami has got his back! Otami controls the action. Hong is trying to stand back up. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
And that's the end of the fight! Shin Otami showed his dominance in that final round. I think Otami has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
