Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
12 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Pj Penn! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Junior Miller! The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Miller. Miller checks the leg kick nicely there.
Miller throws a front kick aimed at Penn's knee but Penn avoids it well. Penn will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Penn closes the distance and clinches up with Miller, looking for a takedown. Penn pushes Miller against the cage but Miller circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Penn cracks Miller with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd. Penn needs to keep his hands up - Miller had a free shot at his head there. Penn swings away with a body shot that misses
and Miller counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Miller misses with a lunging right hand
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick. Penn swings and misses with a shot to the body and Miller counters with a good, hard body kick but Penn shrugs it off. Junior Miller seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. The fighters circle momentarily. Penn darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch. Penn misses with a looping right. Penn stalks Miller and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Miller's face. Miller staggers backwards, shaken. Penn misses with a wild body shot. Miller scores with a kick to the midsection. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Miller cracks Penn with a good jab. Penn misses with a wild body shot. Penn ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Penn looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple. Miller digs a good body shot into Penn's ribs. Penn tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Miller was well out of range. Poor timing from Penn. Miller clobbers Penn with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise. Miller looks to score with a jab to the body but Penn is just out of range.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Penn there as he acknowledges the shot.
It looks like Pj Penn has been cut. Penn uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Miller. Penn comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Miller throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Penn counters with a nice uppercut. A slapping body kick lands there for Miller. Penn is breathing heavily. Miller throws a head kick that misses. Penn misses with a wild body shot. Miller throws the kick towards the body but Penn avoids it. Penn throws the left hand but Miller avoids the punch easily. Miller jabs Penn right on the nose. Penn blinks but takes it well. Penn tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Miller ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Miller's jab looks to have found its range, popping Penn under the eye. Penn on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Miller. Miller obviously looking to wear him down.
Miller misses with a left hand and Penn counters with a nice double leg into guard. Miller wants to stand up but Penn is controlling him. Miller really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Miller is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Miller wants to sweep here but Penn controlling him for the moment. Miller is trying to keep Penn in close.
Penn advances to half guard. Miller keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Miller wants to get back to his feet.
Penn perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Penn sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Miller defending well though. Penn wants to take a breather but Miller is having none of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Miller is looking to improve his position.
Penn throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Penn is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Penn sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Miller defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Penn. Penn working Miller over with strikes here.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A nice elbow there by Penn. Penn unloading with bombs! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Miller is in a horrible position here. Penn smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Miller is rocked! Penn unloading with bombs! Miller is still in real trouble! Can Penn finish him? Penn throws some shoulder strikes here and then postures up. Oh, he's gone for an armbar! Miller has his hands clasped together but Penn breaks the hold and Miller is forced to tap! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over! That was lightning fast by Penn!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:44 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Pj Penn! Pj Penn is the new lightweight champion!
