With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Alverez!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Luis Engracia and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gracie scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Gracie working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Gracie tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alverez struggling a bit here.
Alverez is holding Gracie down, trying to stall.

Gracie is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Alverez knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
The strikes coming from Gracie are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Gracie is looking to take a break and control but Alverez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Alverez tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Alverez is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Gracie is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Alverez knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Alverez is trying to control but can't.

Gracie looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Alverez is staying active underneath Gracie, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Renzo Gracie dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Alverez thows a body kick. Gracie tries to catch it but that hurt him.

Alverez has Gracie up against the cage in a clinch.
Alverez lands an uppercut.
Nice body punch from Alverez - that landed with a thud.
Alverez lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Alverez works on Gracie's body with a couple of short punches.
Gracie jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Alverez walks away with a smile on his face. Gracie gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Alverez clinches with his opponent.

Alverez scores with a shot to the side of Gracie's head.
Alverez lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Alverez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Alverez lets loose with a powerful body kick. Gracie will feel that in the morning.
Alverez works Gracie's body with a nice hook.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown but Alverez shows good takedown defense.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Nice takedown defense from Alverez. No joy for Gracie on that attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Renzo Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Alverez has closed the distance and engaged Gracie in a clinch.

Alverez lands a shoulder strike.
Gracie tries to pull guard but Alverez holds him up against the cage and eventually Gracie drops back down to his feet.
Alverez lands a right hand.

Alverez escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Alverez digs a good hook to Gracie's body.
Alverez lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.


It looks like Renzo Gracie has been cut.
Alverez fakes a right and follows up with a big left that drops Gracie to one knee - oooooh, he's wobbly! Gracie looks to clinch but Alverez throws him off and pummels him into the canvas! Gracie taps out under the strikes! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Thiago Alverez!
Thiago Alverez really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Dynamic Nutrition $35 159 Recovery logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
