PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Waylon Barrera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Alex Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Joseph Jones and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Johnson fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Barrera to the ground. Johnson is now in Barrera's guard.
Johnson wants to stand but Barrera is controlling his posture from full guard.
Johnson won't allow Barrera to sweep him here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Johnson wants to get up but he can't break Barrera's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Barrera really is a fat lump.
Barrera wants to sweep but no luck.
Barrera has a closed guard, preventing Johnson from standing up.
Barrera is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Johnson is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Barrera escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Johnson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Johnson wanted to stand there but Barrera had control of the position.
Barrera wants to sweep but no luck.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Barrera fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Barrera stuffs the takedown.
Barrera goes for a double leg but Johnson avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Johnson continues to drive forward.

Johnson's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Barrera.

Barrera tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Johnson defends well and Barrera ends up having to push Johnson into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Johnson gets control of Barrera's arms and successfully pulls guard. Johnson will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

and Barrera counters with a one-two to the body.
Johnson tries for a takedown but Barrera circles away easily
and Barrera counters with a three punch combo that has Johnson backing up. Johnson nods at Barrera to acknowledge the strikes.

and Barrera counters with a nice double leg into side control. Johnson won't be happy with that.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Johnson leaves Barrera with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Well Barrera has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
