PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Lucius Sparks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Learned Hand (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Lucius Sparks!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Learned Hand!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Igor Prikhodko and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hand shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Sparks but Sparks pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Hand feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Sparks is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Hand defends well.
Sparks is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hand avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Sparks.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sparks looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Hand with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Sparks not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sparks thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hand's head.
Sparks thows a huge punch but Hand dodges it nicely.
Sparks throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Sparks scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Hand trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Sparks manages to pass to mount!

Hand is wriggling around trying to escape.
Hand wants to hold on but Sparks pushes him away.
Hand is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Sparks is staying active.
Hand has given up his back here. Will Sparks look for the submission or keep pounding away?
This has been an exciting period of action!

Sparks working for the choke.
Sparks has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sparks lands a punch to the side of the head from the back.
Hand avoids the strikes from Sparks.
Hand trying to control the hands but Sparks won't let him.
Sparks throwing strikes and Hand squirms under the pressure, ending up mounted.

Sparks is looking to work his way around to Hand's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.
Sparks misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Hand really wants to buck Sparks off and get back to his feet.
Sparks connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sparks thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Hand takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Sparks prevents Hand from getting the reversal.
Hand wants to get back to his feet.
Hand is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Sparks goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Hand turns into him and now he's in Sparks's guard.
Sparks keeping moving, preventing Hand from controlling successfully.
Hand wants to pass the guard but Sparks is keeping the position.

Hand gets to his feet. Sparks looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lucius Sparks dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Hand dives in and scores a takedown into Sparks's guard.
Sparks scores with a short punch from the bottom.

Sparks is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hand is aware though and is defending well.
Hand really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sparks. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Hand stands up from guard. Let's bang!

and Sparks cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Hand scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Hand wants to control but Sparks is keeping him busy.
Sparks is trying to improve his position.

Sparks manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Sparks connects with a nice short shot to Hand's temple.
Hand wants to get back to his feet.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hand can do anything to dispel that myth.

Sparks is looking for a kimura but Hand is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Sparks to get the leverage.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Hand kicks off Sparks and gets to his feet.

Hand scores with a takedown into Sparks's guard.
Sparks is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Hand can do to turn this around?
Sparks tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Hand must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Hand trying to control but Sparks is working from the bottom.
Hand stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sparks swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Sparks looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Hand has picked Sparks up and slammed him! Sparks can't keep hold of the triangle and Hand manages to pass to side control!

Hand decides to stand back up.

Hand darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Hand trying to control from half guard but Sparks is working away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Hand decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Hand closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Hand stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Sparks gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Hand to score an easy takedown into full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Sparks has an active guard here but Hand has managed to pass into half guard.
Sparks is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Sparks is in trouble now - Hand has advanced to mount!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hand tries to control but Sparks wriggling away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Learned Hand showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Hand would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Hand trying to control but Sparks is working from the bottom.
Sparks is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Sparks tries to roll over but Hand keeps him under control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Hand escapes and gets back to his feet.
Sparks stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Sparks wants it to stay on the feet.
A little feinted left hand from Sparks on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

Hand shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Sparks napping and manages to drive through into side control!

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Hand stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Sparks gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Hand is looking to stand up but Sparks won't let him.
Sparks wants to sweep but no luck.
Sparks has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Hand has passed into side control.
Sparks is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Hand's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hand wants to stand up but Sparks is controlling the position.

Hand stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Hand fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Sparks sprawls well initially but Hand persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Hand is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hand tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

Hand stands up out of the half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Hand shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Sparks's guard.

Hand gets to his feet. Sparks looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

And that's the end of the fight!
Learned Hand comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hand has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
