PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Waistmuller (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Serious Sam (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that John Waistmuller has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily John Waistmuller seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Waistmuller!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Serious Sam!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Alan Glass and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Waistmuller looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Sam avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Waistmuller gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Sam is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Waistmuller is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Waistmuller is looking for a triangle but Sam pushes his legs off easily.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Sam shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Waistmuller but Waistmuller pushes him off and we're back to square one.

and Sam counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Sam distracts Waistmuller with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Sam is in close to Waistmuller's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Waistmuller looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Waistmuller is breathing heavily.
Sam wants to control from the top but Waistmuller keeps moving.
Sam has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Waistmuller is proving hard to escape from.

Waistmuller is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Sam wants to control from the top but Waistmuller keeps moving.
Sam lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Waistmuller looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Sam with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Sam slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Sam stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Waistmuller swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Waistmuller is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Waistmuller is refusing to be controlled, as Sam sits in half guard.
Waistmuller is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Sam's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Sam's back!

Sam is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Waistmuller gets his way!
Waistmuller is not going to allow Sam to sit and survive in this position.
Waistmuller keeps control of the position easily here as Sam tries to buck him off.
Sam tries to roll but Waistmuller sticks to his back.
Sam has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Sam just trying to survive but Waistmuller is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Waistmuller has the hooks in. Sam is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Waistmuller is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Sam is defending well though. Waistmuller let's go of the attempt for now.
You can see the frustration on Sam's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Sam breaks Waistmuller's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Sam loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Sam postures up in Waistmuller's guard and throws a big left but Waistmuller blocks it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Serious Sam dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Waistmuller darts in and clinches Sam up against the cage.

Sam gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Sam works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Waistmuller has his hands clasped together around Sam's back. He's all about the action.
Sam wants to get back to his feet.
Sam trying to control the action but Waistmuller is working from the bottom.
Waistmuller is pressing down on Sam's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Sam avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Waistmuller escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Sam gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Waistmuller might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sam missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Waistmuller drives through and clinches with Sam against the cage.

Waistmuller ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Waistmuller no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Waistmuller bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sam's guard.
Sam manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Sam is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Waistmuller can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Waistmuller tries to lock up and control but Sam gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Waistmuller looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Sam is looking to improve his position.
Sam tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Sam is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Waistmuller is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Sam manages to get to full guard.
Waistmuller makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Sam wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Waistmuller winds up and cracks Sam with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Sam controls Waistmuller momentarily but Waistmuller frees himself.
Sam pulls Waistmuller in close to prevent any damage.

Sam is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Waistmuller stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sam swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sam tries to land a sweep but no joy.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Waistmuller scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Sam is trying to get back to full guard.

Waistmuller escapes and gets back to his feet.
Waistmuller tries to clinch up.

Sam manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Waistmuller manages to get himself to full guard.

Waistmuller had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Sam is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Waistmuller Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Sam's back instead.

Waistmuller is persistently looking for the submission but Sam is defending it well.
Sam tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Waistmuller avoids the attempt from Sam to control.
Waistmuller lands a nice shot to the head.
Sam keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Sam is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Sam is looking to get to half guard.
Waistmuller can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Sam is looking to escape.
Sam tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Sam wants to control but Waistmuller is having none of it.
Sam is wriggling around trying to escape.

Waistmuller has control of Sam's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Sam regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Sam is squirming around, avoiding Waistmuller's attempts to control the action.

And that's the end of the fight!
John Waistmuller showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Waistmuller has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
