Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Chavez Mendez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jese Rodriguez! The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Johanna Lukiainen and Matti Vanhoillinen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rodriguez takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Rodriguez rushes Mendez and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Rodriguez keeps control of Mendez as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Rodriguez jumps guard and drags Mendez to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Mendez pushes down on Rodriguez's leg and manages to get into half guard. Mendez seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Rodriguez does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. The fighters are battling for position here. Rodriguez manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Rodriguez has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Mendez off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rodriguez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Mendez shoots in for a takedown but Rodriguez shows good takedown defense. Rodriguez shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Mendez as he avoids it easily. Mendez is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rodriguez fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Chavez Mendez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jese Rodriguez. Mendez displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Rodriguez. Mendez dives in and grabs Rodriguez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rodriguez pushes down on Mendez's head and hops out. Mendez throws the kick towards the body but Rodriguez avoids it. Rodriguez darts in looking for a takedown but Mendez gets double underhooks and turns Rodriguez into the cage. Rodriguez shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Mendez but Mendez pushes him off and we're back to square one. Rodriguez is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Rodriguez shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Rodriguez looks winded! Rodriguez shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Mendez counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Mendez jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Rodriguez walks away with a smile on his face. Mendez gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Mendez closes the distance and clinches.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mendez fails to pull guard.

Mendez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Mendez tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Rodriguez paws at him with a jab and circles away. Mendez fails with a takedown attempt. Rodriguez shoots in looking for a takedown. Mendez tries to sprawl out of it but Rodriguez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mendez manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. As Rodriguez looks to move away, Mendez throws a big counter combo but Rodriguez just gets out of the way. Rodriguez moves into the clinch.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rodriguez tries to land knees in the clinch but Mendez avoids the damage to the body. A frustrated look appears on Rodriguez's face as he tries to break the clinch. Mendez is looking to control Rodriguez's arms but Rodriguez gets an underhook and turns him. Now Mendez has his back to the cage. Mendez stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Mendez can't find room to land a body shot as Rodriguez controls the action.
A frustrated look appears on Mendez's face as he tries to break the clinch. Mendez tries to pull guard but Rodriguez holds him up against the cage and eventually Mendez drops back down to his feet.

Mendez wants to clinch up but Rodriguez keeps it at a distance.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Mendez tries for a takedown but Rodriguez circles away easily and Rodriguez counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt. Rodriguez lands a two punch combo.
It looks like Chavez Mendez has been cut. Rodriguez dives in and grabs Mendez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mendez pushes down on Rodriguez's head and hops out. Mendez shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Rodriguez napping and manages to drive through into side control! What's Rodriguez going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle. Mendez is looking to take a break and control but Rodriguez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Rodriguez tries to buck Mendez off but Mendez is having none of it. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Jese Rodriguez will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Chavez Mendez's cut. That's time! Mendez's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Rodriguez moves into the clinch. Rodriguez has Mendez pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Mendez manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Rodriguez blocks an uppercut.

Mendez looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. Rodriguez tries to pull guard but Mendez holds him up against the cage and eventually Rodriguez drops back down to his feet.

Mendez tries to clinch up. Mendez throws a leg kick that misses. Rodriguez has closed the distance and engaged Mendez in a clinch.
Mendez is looking to take this one to the mat. Rodriguez prevents the takedown attempt.
Rodriguez wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Mendez has him pressed against the cage. Rodriguez has had enough of the clinch but Mendez keeps him there for the moment. Rodriguez pulls guard successfully.

The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Mendez checks a leg kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mendez looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Rodriguez! Rodriguez explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there! The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Rodriguez will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Mendez swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect. Rodriguez shoots in looking for a takedown. Mendez tries to sprawl out of it but Rodriguez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mendez manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Rodriguez is breathing heavily. Rodriguez dives in for a single leg takedown but Mendez sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Mendez shoots in looking for a takedown but Rodriguez manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Mendez's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Rodriguez with the counter takedown but Mendez avoids it easily. Rodriguez circles away from the clinch attempt.

Rodriguez looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Rodriguez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Mendez tries to pull guard but Rodriguez forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Mendez pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Rodriguez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Horrible takedown attempt by Rodriguez or perhaps it was just good defense by Mendez, which made it look bad. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Rodriguez. Mendez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Mendez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rodriguez pinned against the cage. Rodriguez gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Rodriguez instigates a clinch. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jese Rodriguez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The cut man is working on Chavez Mendez's cut. That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!

That's one minute gone in the round. The fight stays on the outside here - Mendez looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Rodriguez looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it. Mendez throws a head kick that misses. Rodriguez throws the kick towards the body but Mendez avoids it. And Mendez counters with a quick kick to the body but Rodriguez blocks it. Chavez Mendez is winning the standup battle so far. Mendez drives through with a takedown into Rodriguez's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Rodriguez is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Mendez dives into side control.
Mendez has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand. Mendez tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Rodriguez manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Rodriguez takes the fight into the clinch.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mendez decides to pull guard. Rodriguez sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Mendez's guard. Mendez wants to control but Rodriguez is keeping busy and won't allow it. Mendez is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Rodriguez is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Mendez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Mendez wants to control the action here but instead Rodriguez manages to pass to full mount!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rodriguez sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Mendez might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Mendez is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Rodriguez throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Rodriguez controlling the pace for now. Mendez tries to lock up and control but Rodriguez gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Rodriguez goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Mendez turns into him and now he's in Rodriguez's guard.
Rodriguez keeping moving, preventing Mendez from controlling successfully. Rodriguez pulls Mendez in close to prevent any damage. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Rodriguez is looking to stand up but Mendez isn't so interested in that idea. Chavez Mendez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Jese Rodriguez is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight. Rodriguez pulls Mendez in close to his closed guard and prevents Mendez from doing any damage or advancing position.
And that's the end of the fight! I would just about give that final round to Jese Rodriguez. I've got Rodriguez winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
